but since that transcends beyond mere FPS, Half-Life or Call of Duty.

I also was about to say Tribes. Best online team sport I ever played. I like other shooters, but "once you jetpack you never go back." Now that Garage Games owns the IP and has acknowledged having the original source code there is a great chance of them developing a cool successor at some point.

For now they seem to be focusing on enhancing Legions, and in June iirc the original Tribes will be added to the Instant Action lineup for free online play via browser. It will have a fresh patch and some minor fixes. Also, I think they said that no "skiing" script will be needed, they're implementing something uniform in the patch.

Sure the graphics are aging, but even at that it doesn't look bad. I encourage anyone who never tried this series to take advantage of this when it comes. And by the way, it is one of the numerous games you can play for free at Instant Action.

the only one close to real is the sniper... no one else... the rest got a bunch of nut guns...

If you are a person that like direct fire weapons... dont play TF2... non of the classes will make you find yourself... everything is a fragfest... (awesome) and only 15% weapons are hit scans....

Everybody knows but is afraid to say that the original Quake was/is the best FPS game ever created. I still enjoy playing Quake on Nightmare.:)

BF (1942 and BF2) coming from UT, CS, DOD the addition of vehicles in BF just did it for me.

Although L4D is quickly moving up my list (infecting me if you will...) Love the team and campaign concepts. Can't believe I didn't think of them years ago.

IMO best series are
Multiplayer: Quake (Quake & Quake 2 are probably my 2 favorite online fragfests of all time, Team Fortress was a quake mod, I remember getting my Pure3D Voodoo 1 card with 6mb of ram and overclocking it. Glide made PC games look fvcking awesome.

Single Player: Half Life (IMO Far Cry offered the best single player gameplay, but Far Cry 2 not so good, Half Life and Half Life 2 are both awesome, and they both have nice Multiplayer as well ... )

I'm having trouble choosing a best series.
Half-Life has the best SP series so far and some of the biggest mods of the current time period. Quake series was absolutely huge for me and Q1 is the only FPS that never leaves my PC. Unreal series has a really good cross over from SP to MP games (Unreal -> Unreal Tournament). Tribes had an absolutely amazing stand alone MP environment. NOLF was a very solid SP series, as is COD, Thief and Hitman.

In addition to all the obligatory mentions listed above in other posts, I would cite Resident Evil 4, particularly on the Wii.

Resident Evil 4 (and 5) aren't First Person Shooters...they are Third Person Shooters, like Gears of War 1 & 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4.

Quite right sir, I stand corrected.

I played COD4 until the crack of dawn on many occasions. I'm more of a RTS or turn based guy, but for some reason I slept with COD4 under my pillow. Just good, fun, addicting multiplayer game play.

Some levels were frag fests, but if you played along and just fragged back like the level meant for you to do, you still had a lot of fun.

I was a little late in the game for CS, UT, and HL. I tried the newer UT and it was hard to for me to get into it. The unrealistic gravity and physics, fantasy guns, and over sized players are just not my style.

I agree, but glob HL2 in with all of the HL series and its mods, it has great MP but not as good as BF2 imho.

best? probably COD 4 for singleplayer and CS:S for multiplayer
Most memorable? Fear. Imagine alone in a room, midnight, no one at home, maximum volume

F.E.A.R. is just such a fantastic game! The sound-effects in F.E.A.R. 2 were also great, specially in the mech-suit levels.
