I think it had to do with the endless slaughtering of monsters...just got bored with it after a while. Also the constant switching between the flashlight and weapons got to me.

I nominate the original Unreal Tournament, released in 1999. UT built upon the excellent single player game Unreal. Unreal Tournament had people addicted to it like crack. Over 10,000 custom maps and mods were made for it, a great many of which are first rate. Hundreds of clans formed and competed on competitive ladders. Thousands of people could be found online 24/7 during its heyday. To this day, people still organize clan match-style pick-up-game matches with organized balanced teams and voice comm, and a competitive league tournament (Major League Unreal Tournament) is still active.

I've played more UT2k4 than every other game combined twice or thrice over.

UT3 isn't quite as popular, but at least it's not as bad as Quake 4 was.

I remember I was in some sort of moving platform and I got all überly-annoyed and quit and throw the game away...

I really liked the R6: Vegas games as well.

The newer ones that make you feel as a greater part of a whole, a participant in a real war as opposed to superman, which always seemed boring and hard to get into for me, especially from a modern or sci-fi perspective.

I enjoyed COD4, Crysis, etc more than Half Life 2 for example. Bing a significant part of a war that seems to change with military allies to fight alongside always seemed more interesting to me than being Gordon Freeman where everything had to be done by you or "OMG its the end of the world!1!111!" thing.I vastly prefer a gameworld that continues without you, it just seems so much more realistic.
