I think the Craig/Vitter dichotomy is more dependent on the fact that in the case of a Senator's leaving, his replacement is selected by the governor of the state represented. While Idaho has a Rep gov and would replace Craig with another Rep, Louisiana has a Democratic governor who would then almost certainly appoint a democrat to fill Vitter's vacant senate seat.
