On March 1st, I informed Fox that I would not renew my contract. The purpose of this message to all of you is twofold:

First, I must thank each of you for the cooperation and support you've shown me over the years. Those working off-camera, the bookers and producers, don't often get the recognition you deserve, but I want you to know that I have always appreciated the challenges you face and the skill with which you master them.

Second, I feel compelled to explain why I have to leave. Four decades ago, I took an oath as a newly commissioned officer. I swore to "support and defend the Constitution," and that oath did not expire when I took off my uniform. Today, I feel that Fox News is assaulting our constitutional order and the rule of law, while fostering corrosive and unjustified paranoia among viewers. Over my decade with Fox, I long was proud of the association. Now I am ashamed.

In my view, Fox has degenerated from providing a legitimate and much-needed outlet for conservative voices to a mere propaganda machine for a destructive and ethically ruinous administration. When prime-time hosts--who have never served our country in any capacity--dismiss facts and empirical reality to launch profoundly dishonest assaults on the FBI, the Justice Department, the courts, the intelligence community (in which I served) and, not least, a model public servant and genuine war hero such as Robert Mueller--all the while scaremongering with lurid warnings of "deep-state" machinations-- I cannot be part of the same organization, even at a remove. To me, Fox News is now wittingly harming our system of government for profit.

As a Russia analyst for many years, it also has appalled me that hosts who made their reputations as super-patriots and who, justifiably, savaged President Obama for his duplicitous folly with Putin, now advance Putin's agenda by making light of Russian penetration of our elections and the Trump campaign. Despite increasingly pathetic denials, it turns out that the "nothing-burger" has been covered with Russian dressing all along. And by the way: As an intelligence professional, I can tell you that the Steele dossier rings true--that's how the Russians do things.. The result is that we have an American president who is terrified of his counterpart in Moscow.

I do not apply the above criticisms in full to Fox Business, where numerous hosts retain a respect for facts and maintain a measure of integrity (nor is every host at Fox News a propaganda mouthpiece--some have shown courage). I have enjoyed and valued my relationship with Fox Business, and I will miss a number of hosts and staff members. You're the grown-ups.

Also, I deeply respect the hard-news reporters at Fox, who continue to do their best as talented professionals in a poisoned environment. These are some of the best men and women in the business..

So, to all of you: Thanks, and, as our president's favorite world leader would say, "Das vidanya."

I wonder how many others at Fox News feel this way but don't have the courage to speak out.

It's a joke. Fox was always like this. As long as I've been aware of them, 2000 onwards. Remember Colbert and Jon Stewart? "You're hurting America." How long is a decade? Probably no more than 10 years. This guy is just taking advantage of the Trump hysteria to end something he knew well he shouldn't have started.

Wrong its full on bat shit crazy now.

Rather flippant analysis. So a big nothing burger.

And yet it’s the network that the POTUS tells everyone is the only one telling them the truth. And they lap it right up. It’s gotten much much worse since Trump took office. And that’s saying something.

It is and it isn't.

You're right in that Fox has long, long been a Republican mouthpiece that lies and distorts things to suit the party agenda. The problem, as I see it, is that the madness of Trump and his cronies pushed Fox to make a decision: did it continue to toe the line knowing it would regularly have to defend the indefensible, or keep on a (relatively) sane level that risked alienating some of its base? Clearly, it chose the former.

Peters arguably should have known that Fox routinely chooses ratings over integrity, but I don't want to lump too much of the blame on him; I'd rather he see the light and ditch Fox than stick with it for the sake of consistency.

How I remember it, it couldn't have gotten worse. At least not much worse. It's always been the republican channel. This guy seems very dishonest, even for a republican. You can tell by the way he writes that he probably always knew better. Any credit he gets for this will be ill-deserved. It's easy to quit and move on while being patted on the back. What courage. Much sacrifice.

I agree he doesn't deserve an ounce of credit. However, it is a statement about how bad Fox has gotten. Yes they've always been dishonest pieces of shit, but they have been crossing new lines since Trump took the helm. It's one thing to fabricate lies to attack the opposition, but to run cover for an administration that is seriously eroding everything that government is supposed to stand for is a whole new ball game.

it got worse?

It feels like Breitbart had a TV channel. Bannon might as well be leading the damn thing.

Worst part is I don't think it has to be a willful act either. Trump is so terrible, but partisanship demands a cognitive dissonance so much greater to defend him, compared to Bush. To anyone saying it's willful, I suggest you take a look inside the social media bubble that conservatives live in. Every fact that shapes your world view has an alternative fact to counter it. Every single one.

nah. They had crossed all lines long ago. There aren't that many fundamental lines to cross, so it's more of the same kind of thing, more frequently. What are we talking about, 15 pointlessly different categories of dishonesty? We know or should know that fox will support anything republicans do, so when someone comes along you really hate, and Fox does what it's always done, it's not getting worse. People are getting worse, but Fox is maxed out. #maga

100% agree.

I have to agree..Isn't this the same guy who called Obama a "total pussy" on the network before. He has now just concluded that Fox News has gone too far in regards to the truth. But now it appears that this Peters character really was an idiot. He would have to be, to have been proud of his association with Fox before now. Although, now is better than never...

That's an awful flippant statement about a network where the POTUS gets his intel.

The cognitive dissonance in having our law & order president tear down the FBI, the IC, Mueller & anybody else who gets in his way was apparently unbearable for Peters, a right winger in every sense of the word.

And they say bipartisanism is dead...

Deadpool is shocked! Shocked, I tells ya!

Many Republican supporters, apparently. Gullible people like taj and Felix think Fox News is a bastion of objectivity even now.

They still promote Uranium One as if Putin now personally has a stockpile of Uranium sitting in Russia because of Hillary.
Facts, Evidence, and Real News be damned.

So the same people that hide behind and beat their chests about respecting our military and our veterans will bush this guy's thoughts and opinions and FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE into the trash bin.
