So did OP survive?
Yup. I'm still kicking.
I met him at a restaurant he favors in Charlotte (Max's Italian or something like that) and after turning his clip over to him, he offered to buy my dinner and a couple of drinks. He was a cool fella and a short while after that his wife came in as well (she works in uptown Charlotte). Turns, his wife and my mother-in-law know each other and were former co-workers.
Freaky small world.
I got a nice dinner, a couple of good drinks, some interesting conversations, and a thankful handshake out of this. Better than nothing.
Well done. I've always believed that I had above-average ethics, but "anonymous cash" is a tester...I USUALLY make the attempt to do the right thing however.
Several years ago, I was working at the Chevron refinery in Richmond, CA. We were filling the catalyst containers, but had reached a "stop work" situation for a couple of hours. I was wandering around the area and found a money clip with over $1300 in it.
<insert Daffy Duck, "I'm rich, I'm rich, I'm independently wealthy!">
BUT, my better judgement took over. Most of the crew I was working with was from out of state, brought in just for this job...I noticed the foreman was looking a bit...worried and was looking around the area.
I asked what was up...and he told me that he had lost his money clip...and told me almost to the dollar how much was in it. He had cashed his check the night before, but hadn't had time to buy the money order to send to his family.
I thought the big mofo was gonna kiss me when I handed him that money clip.
I became an "instant celebrity" on the job. The foreman was very highly thought of by his crew, and I had just "saved his bacon" by returning the money to him.
I guess the "what comes around, goes around" does actually work. This past Feb., we stopped at Lowes for some plants and misc., and as we left, when I pulled the wad of keys out of my pocket, unbeknownst to me, my money clip fell out of my pocket.
I didn't notice until a couple of days later when I was getting ready for school.
I "mentally backtracked" the last places we had been, and even though I KNEW the money was gone, (only about $80...but it was textbook money) I started calling around.
Sure enough, one of the Lowes employees had found it and turned it in.
They didn't know WHO it was, so I couldn't even thank the person, let alone hand them a $20 as a reward, NOR would the store manager allow me to donate $20 to the employee coffee fund, summer picnic fund. etc., so all I was left with was writing a nice letter to corporate commending the unknown employee.
Again, good job OP. You did the right thing.
