Found a money clip in grocery store parking lot

I had to pick up a few things from the grocery store last and so, I headed off to get what I needed. Pulled into the parking lot, got out, got my groceries and proceeded to leave.
After putting my stuff in the back I walked around to the driver door and kicked something.

It had some weight to it and I just glanced down. It was a silver money clip with quite a few bills tucked into it. There was no one parked beside me on that side (Tuesday nights are kinda of dead at 9pm for grocery shopping). There were no initials on the clip or any credit/debit cards or any sort of identification.
BUT, there it contains about $570 cash. 3 $100 bills, 5 $20's, and the rest is 10's, 5's and one dollar notes. A really nice wad of cash!
I imagine this belongs to an older person since not too many of the younger folk carry money clips and that much cash.

I would hate to lose this much cash and would want it returned to me. I sure as hell don't want to give it to the snot noses who were there that night. There was no "older" manager type there when I asked. The one acting as manager was just one of the clerks that had the manager tag slapped on them that night.

I'm going back there during my lunch to see if anyone has called about it. I really don't want to just hand it over. It would be too easy for someone to deny ever hearing about and just pocketing that cash.
If someone can identify the clip and the amount in the clip, I'll gladly hand it back over.

Any suggestions?

**EDIT w/ CLIFFS**

Cliffs:
found out to whom it belonged
returned the cash
warmly thanked
Got a good dinner out of it.

The End.

I would call and tell them you found it. Whoever wants it back must provide an accurate description. More than likely you were on a parking lot video camera, so I wonder if they would go through the trouble of searching it for clues as to who parked there before you.

Give it to one of the adult managers, he/she should be professional enough not to just swipe the money. Of course, if nobody ever claims it... maybe it can come back to you in that case.

Do they have a bulletin board where you could post that it was found? Maybe have the store post a sign about an item being found and see who turns up.

if you had some spare time, best would probably be just to hang out at the car for an hour or so in case they come back. probably wont take them too long to realize they are missing that. otherwise your idea is pretty good too

Put up a sign in the parking lot: "Money clip found on <date> at <time>. Call <number> with detailed description to claim."

I would omit the fact that it was a clip - if they can describe that it's one more piece of evidence it was theirs.

Well try to see if you can find whomever it actually belongs to, so I'd say put up a sign. My mother and I found a bag filled with money and we just asked a random person if it was there and they were like yeah and just took it. What we should have done is take it to the police and stuff cause it was about a grand or more. This was all outside of a movie theater.

I agree with putting up a sign that says something along the lines of, "Found a valuable item in the parking lot on <date> and <time>. Call *** and if you describe it exactly, then it's yours." Make them tell you it's a gold clip and approximately (if not exactly) how much money was in it.

I'll check to see if they do. I have never payed attention if there one or not.

Not a bad idea about the sign though. I'll try that approach and see what turns up.

How long would you all wait before giving up? 1 or 2 weeks?

Maybe even just a sign that says Money Found or something and then have the details that they require to give you the fact that it was on a clip and the approximate about of money there was. Maybe even around what time and when they may have lost it.

this is what i would do. I would not hand it to a cashier or manager. i had a bad experience, althogh anecdotal, i worked at target and found 100 bucks outside of the store and i decided to give it to my manager, she said that if no one claimed it in 30 days it would be mine. 30 days later and guess what? "oh i dont remember what you're talking about! and the money would go back into the cash registers anyways after 30 days!"

You seem pretty high and mighty to think the night manager is a risk.

I'd have handed it over and just followed up with a call if I had any doubts.

If you really want to keep the money just do so, don't make excuses.

If you found my wallet I'd really have no idea how much cash was in it at the time. Could be anywhere from $0-100+. I usually keep around $100 on me on the weekends/going out and $20-50 otherwise.

same. I would have turned it into the store as well. if anyone is going to be looking for it, the 1st place they would go is the store personnel. i doubt they would even think to look at a bulletin board.

Turn it in to the police. Then call the store and tell them about it. If no one claims it after a period of time, depending on local law, it will become legally yours, and you can claim it without a guilty conscience.

You probably should have just handed it in to the store. No matter how you slice it, the money is NOT rightfully yours, so even if the store did lose/steal it, it's not your concern.

I like the option to turn it in to the cops and get a receipt for it. They normally have all the procedures in place for handling found goods including money. Just be sure their procedures do allow you to reclaim it if nobody else does. If you don't want that, you could turn it in to the store manager on condition that he / she does this all with a witness present and both of them sign a receipt. That way you have written proof that it was turned in, and of the amount of money involved. The downside is that this does not establish your right to reclaim the money if it is not claimed by the real owner.

I agree that you should not turn it over to anyone, it will just find its way into the pocket of somebody that isn't the owner. Talk to the manager and the clerks at the courtesy counter and leave your name and number. If anyone comes in and asks about the clip they can call you.
