cliff:
1. looked at an used miata
2. liked the car and made an offer to the seller
3. saw a handgun in the glovebox
4. went home and debating on whether to get it or not... seems too sketchy.

went home thought about it some more... damn, scary....

Why do firearms scare you? Did you think it was going to magically pop out of the glove box and shoot you?

If you had been thinking on your feet, then you could have had a car and gun for free.

99 miatas are known for having a saggy glovebox though ;)

Frankly, I would also be a little wary of taking a whole bunch of cash to a meeting with a wankster stranger that you KNOW drives around with a concealed weapon AND is too stupid to take it out of the car before showing it.

There are plenty of other Miatas out there that don't require you to deal with gun-toting wanksters. Besides, do you really think a douchebag like that took good car of the car?

I believe that was stock equipment, something about needing to find replacement alternators in a hurry...

Ignorance or sarcasm? My meter is broken.

You'd buy a car from someone who keeps a handgun in their car? Here, that's a felony.

Why not? It's a tool just like any other. Plus it's perfectly legal in most states with a concealed carry permit (without getting into each state's specific rules).

Ah. Wisconsin is one of the few who states with no CCW permits, so I guess it seems like a bigger deal to me.

Eh..now is my sarcasm meter broken? *tap *tap

I'd run away from the deal. Probably a stolen vehicle from another criminal.

I don't think it's the fear of the gun itself but the high likelihood of a criminal involved in the transaction. Who knows what that gun was used for.

I'd imagine most people would walk away if the person you're dealing with is carrying a gun and is not a law enforcement officer. It's just bad news no matter how you look at it. Better safe than sorry. IMHO.

Someone didn't watch CSI this week:)

For clarification, a guy's car caught on fire and the heat caused the gun in the glovebox, which just happened to be pointed at the driver, to fire.

Why is law enforcement so qualified to be carrying a gun over a regular citizen?

I'm a gun-nut, but I'd be little worried over a handgun in the glove compartment as well. Not from an afraid of the gun standpoint, but of a person who is careless enough to leave one in the car while a stranger takes it for a spin. Was the owner with you the whole time? Was it loaded? You didn't touch it without gloves on did you? Now he's going to go kill someone with your prints all over it.
