Reminds me of the journal in 'Indiana Jones and the last Crusade'... Is there a map or something in teh book ? Have you ever been in Venice ? You do have a frequent flyer membership, right ?

This is so exciting.

PS: 1719 looks like 6ILI when you look at it upside down... interesting...

LOL, No I've never been to Venice. I've been to Rome though. :)
My frequent flyer miles won't get me to Italy.

Get rid of that book man (There's a rare book store in the lobby of the Waldorff Astoria Hotel in NYC) and then, go to venice and use teh map (take it from teh book before selling it) and ... good luck for your quest

He wants to compare your book with his? Hmm, The Ninth Gate anyone?
Someone else said that. What happened in the movie, I've never seenit.

It's about an antique book collector being hired by some rich guy to investigate the authenticity of a rare book that was supposedly co-authored by the devil and holds the secret to immortality or something. But what happens is he finds out that the only 3 surviving books all have 3 differing illustrations and the ones that differ from the other 2 books have LCF (Lucifer) as the illustrator credit, so the collector is constantly studying the photos and trying to piece together the 9 illustrations that the devil drew. Great movie but not Depp's best work.
Did anyone die? Do I have to watch my back? :)

Yes people died, one guy torched himself because he thought he was immortal and wasn't, but I didn't mention the hot girl who followed Depp throughout the movie. I think you would take your chances with her, even though she's evil. :p
I'll need pics before I decide how to proceed.

I'd try to contact a historian familiar with the subject. Maybe they can shed some light on the real year the book was written and where it came from. That wiki link shows two historians.
Good idea.
If you read the update, you'd see that I'm meeting with a professor familar with the story.
He's a recognized historian.

Yeah, already got that chief.

My great-uncle died not too long ago. He was a religious Jew. His daughter is not religious so she has no use for all his old books. She is selling his house now and called me and my brother, and asked us if we want to go through his books and take what we want. So I got a few boxes of old stuff. I'm going through it and I find this little thin volume wrapped in plastic. It's completely handwritten, with a handwritten date of 1719 on top of the first page. The writing is neat, but not the type of hebrew that I'm used to reading (it's an old style of lettering) and the pages are splotched and brown so it's really difficult to read. Either way, I think it's pretty cool. It certainly looks legit.

EDIT: Pics here

EDIT2: Okay, from what I've been able to translate, it seems to be the story of Avrohom ben Avrohom (Abraham ben Abraham). There is some scholarly debate if that story ever even took place. And the date on top is probably the date of the events of the story, not the date it was written. Oh well. It's still pretty damn old and might actually be able to change some scholars opinions that the story did take place, so it can be an important document.

Mega Update:
I wrote about this book on a blog. I was contacted by a professor from Yale who is about to publish a major essay on the topic of the book (Abraham ben Abraham). He emailed me with his phone number. I called him and we will be meeting sometime next week. He told me that it's very similiar to another one from 1862, but there are small and obvious differences. He wants an hour with the book to mark down the differences between this one and the other known texts. This could be interesting!

Watch out...I bet it's a setup and Chris Hansen is going to pop out from behind a curtain asking why you wanted to hook up with a 12 year old claiming to be a professor.

LOL don't let the book out of your sight, in case he's an illicit book dealer trying to pull a fast one on you and flee the scene.

He's not a fraud. He found out about the blog posting because a friend of mine - who is a former student of his - pointed him to it. He then contacted me. He is a respected historian.

That's the craziest & funniest sh!t I've read today.

OP: awesome! That's definitely something to keep passing down through the generations. Be sure to talk to some experts on how best to preserve it.

No clue yet.
The book is deteriorating rapidly now due to human disturbance and the acidic oil from human hand isn't doing it any good. Handle with care, wash hand & use glove.

Mega Update II
Met with the professor last night. It was super-interesting. Basically, he gave me a whole course on the subject of the story, which he believes to be a factual event. He made a copy of the book (in a manner he says is safe) and went through part of it together with me. We compared it to the earliest known printed edition and it was almost word for word with a few minor changes. He said there are about 10 or 11 known manuscripts such as mine, and this would be the 11th or 12th. He said that it could get about $2000 or more at auction, because there are collectors who would be interested in it. He said he will call me to tell me if there are any major differences in the text and if this manuscript is more important than any of the other known ones. All in all, a very interesting man and a very interesting night.

Xerox machine.
He first put down a sheet of some kinda plastic over it and did not close the top of the copier. He told me it's safe. I believe him. There isn't much he doesn't know about old books.

EDIT: Keep in mind this isn't some 14th century manuscript. He dated it at about 1850 give or take.
