Forums are extremely slow

Curious if people having the issue can do a tracert to forums.anandtech.com and see if their traffic is going through anything in the 38.0.0.0-38.255.255.255 range. I'm seeing about 10% packet loss at hop 10 of 12 (38.104.86.222). Noticing there's several routers in that range doing the same, owned by psinet.

Been having extremely slow performance for the last few days, no matter where I'm connecting from (all over the state) or what computer I'm using.

Can you do a tracert and see if you are going through that IP range? The issue I'm seeing, which may not be the cause but isn't helping, is in a connection near the forums. Meaning, more than one source network could hit the same bump mid-routing.

38.104.86.222 is costing 95-500ms consistently (10/10)

It looks to be pretty average from here once I get that many hops away. Here are the last 3-4 hops for me. Forums are slow, but it appears to be local DB rendering lag more than network latency.

10ms be2050.ccr21.atl01.atlas.cogentoco.com [154.54.0.165]

It certainly feels DB related, but might as well address the network issues. I emailed the zone contact for that IP to see if I can get a reply. Technical contact is only a phone number, I guess if necessary I can wade through that.

Just so you guys don't feel that you're being ignored, the problem has been reported and looked into. For the moment we still don't have any idea why this is happening.🙁

Thanks for the update, because it is getting really annoying and frustrating.

Yeah... pretty slow!
Here is the data from firebug.

What's weird is I can load the forums just like normally when I log out, but when I'm logged in it hangs and often won't load a forum page at all.

Even this empty forum with 4 people viewing wouldn't load until I logged out, loaded the page and post I wanted to quote, then logged back in with the post quoted.

So it's obviously a lag related bottleneck bug of some sort with logged in users.

Thanks for posting that, I'll try it next time. I figured something besides network latency was going on, considering it would take over 5 seconds yesterday to switch forums and random threads, but my trace route never showed latency above 200ms.

Yeah, there was a network issue for a short time but it's been resolved. I tested the log out thing and it seems to work. This is something on the DB side.

Forum is unusable when I am logged in, but if I log out (and stay logged out) I can browse the forum without any problems. I log in and it sits there for 10+ mins waiting for the server to load a page. Log back out and it works fine again.

What gives?

I use AdBlock Plus and use NoScript. I don't seem to have the same problems with slowness, at least not recently.

I wouldn't mind seeing the ads if this site didn't have such a bad history with them. Someone should tell the person in charge to either handpick the ads or switch to text ads, or to simply provide a page (a la the SlickDeals front page) where we can use referral links to do purchasing of stuff like computer parts. I would gladly support AnandTech that way or even directly if possible.

probably nearly all of the people here use adblock so ads have nothing to do with this issue. the site is just randomly slow and has been doing that for a LOOOONG time.

At this point I don't see any reason to believe it's a network probably and not a server problem. Unfortunately that seems to be about all we know.
