Forum software poll

I'm using a forum plugin for my site's cms. It's integrated with the cms which is nice, but doesn't scale well as my members increase. Plus it doesn't really have any bells and whistles. If there is a forum you use that isn't in the poll, please post it.

I use SMF, which is an upgrade (and I think the current version) of YaBB.

How do you like that?

I wonder why they dropped the YaBB name. Seems like a weird move.

vBulletin v3 well worth the $169 owned license fee

Yea I'm seriously considering getting vBulletin for my next forum. 😀 I wonder how I would explain that purchase to my wife though...

The best free forum software available.

Owns phpBB.

Does it really? Did they rewrite it from scratch, or is it actually just an improved YaBB release with a new name?

I use phpbb. Whats really nice is if you use postnuke they have coded a postphpbb that wraps itself inside your postnuke site.

Hmmmmm SMF looks interesting...and here I went from Invision to phpBB. Is there a demo of SMF somewhere to check out the admin functions? I don't see anything on their page....

nvm found it

It's almost entirely different. Much improved from a designing and administrative standpoint. I highly recommend it. Skinning an SMF forum is almost as easy as skinning phpbb forum, and it's fast and secure to boot. 🙂

Sorry I took so long to reply to this. Got tied up with stuff all afternoon.

I don't know why (or if) they dropped the YABB name fully or what. I think SMF is the official product now. I think I saw on their forums or site that they're recommending all YaBB users upgrade to SMF.

I first installed phpBB on my site and it worked fine. One of my friends showed me his SMF forum and I got to looking at it and installed it for myself. Maybe I didn't give phpBB a fair inspection, but SMF has so many more features. In my opinion, it was easier to skin, as well. If you can edit HTML, it's easy to come up with a totally different look than the default theme. There's a link to my forums on the front page of my site. I've done some pretty drastic changes from the default install to integrate the forums in with the design of my site.

I'm now a full SMF supporter and don't ever see myself using any other forum software. I'd be more than happy to answer any questions anyone has about it. PM might be best since I may forget about this thread 🙂

Besdies phpBB, what other forums have you tried? I've looked at a few SMF sites and it seems to load incredibly fast.

I've not tried anything on my site other than phpBB and SMF. I started with phpBB and then one of my friends showed me his forums running on SMF. I installed it on mine and liked it so much that I switched my phpBB over to SMF using the conversion tool on SMF's site. Haven't look back since.

Which one of those eats up the most bandwidth? Which one the least?

Couldn't tell ya, but Fusetalk is definitely a resource hog. That was with CF though. I dunno if the .NET version is any different.
