SMF is what YaBB is now, I think. I might be wrong, but my understanding is that development of YaBB has shifted to SMF. Their site is http://simplemachines.org if you're interested. If you're running a YaBB forum, I think there's even a tool to upgrade to SMF. I know for a fact that there's a way to go from phpBB to SMF using a tool written by the developers of SMF.

SMF is Simple Machines Forum (http://www.simplemachines.org)

Its related to YaBB in a round-about way. A few years ago, a few people took the idea of YaBB, but wanted a PHP version. Thus, YaBB SE was created. Eventually they decided that in order to extract maximum performance and flexibility, a rewrite was in order. This ground up rebuild is SMF. Really SMF shares nothing with YaBB, other than a YaBB (SE) -> SMF easy conversion.
