2013 will have only 19 races. Valencia is no more, but no circuit will take its place. :(

Super excited about this weekend, I cancelled going to a party and a St.Patty's date with my GF so I could watch qualifying live (she'll watch with me :)). I'm hoping Hamilton can bring something this year with the POS Merc and it'll be awesome to see how Perez does considering his success in the Sauber. I'm really really hoping Red Bull is dethroned but I think we'll have to wait at least another year for all the changes before that'll have a chance. :(

Merc will likely start out good but as usual struggle down the stretch. They have serious issues keeping up with development. Even the year they won the title they limped home with only winning because they struck gold on the double diffuser and created a massive lead. Hamilton alone will certainly give them a big boost over last year.

I still want to see Alonso in a competitive car. For whatever reason I can't stand him but he is bar none the best driver on the grid, just needs a good car.

P1 ended with Vettel on top and Ferraris close on his tail. The time set by Vettel was 3 tenths quicker than last year.

P Name Time
1 Sebastian Vettel 1:27.211
2 Felipe Massa 1:27.289
3 Fernando Alonso 1:27.547
4 Lewis Hamilton 1:27.552
5 Mark Webber 1:27.668
6 Kimi Räikkönen 1:27.877
7 Nico Rosberg 1:28.013
8 Adrian Sutil 1:28.426
9 Jenson Button 1:28.440
10 Romain Grosjean 1:28.520
11 Sergio Perez 1:28.597
12 Nico Hulkenberg 1:28.786
13 Paul di Resta 1:28.910
14 Pastor Maldonado 1:29.443
15 Valtteri Bottas 1:29.928
16 Esteban Gutierrez 1:30.203
17 Jean-Eric Vergne 1:30.729
18 Daniel Ricciardo 1:30.969
19 Jules Bianchi 1:31.263
20 Max Chilton 1:32.176
21 Charles Pic 1:32.274
22 Giedo van der Garde 1:32.388

Based on this session alone:

Red Bull and Ferrari are pretty close.

Lotus looks better than Merc and McLaren, with the latter underperforming.. considerinf that Button is strong in this track.

Sauber and FI are also competitive and pretty close heading the mid field.

Toro Rosso and Williams are a huge disappointment, they look slow and pretty bad with the balance of their car.

Marussia looks better than Caterham and Chilton will get his ass handed to him this season by Bianchi. Caterham looks like the worst of all the cars so far.

P2 starts in 30 mins.

So, P2 looks like an RB walk-over.

As for Valencia/Catalunia: Aren't they alternating every year? I thought that was the deal behind that. Much like Hockenheim/Nürburgring.

Considering getting up early tomorrow to watch quali :awe:

There is a 50 - 50 chance for rain during the quali. Currently a storm system is passing through the circuit. Even without the rain we may have a wet quali.

still only 1/3 of the way thru qually...q1 was pretty eventful, and the weather keeps getting worse.

so far, nbc's coverage gets a B. very good, but still a minimal presence actually at the race. even the commercials are better than speed.

edit:
booooo! washout
qualy resumes 2 hours before the race

RBs on the front row, Massa out-qualifying Alonso, Hamilton fast...sounds just like the end of last season :D

Notable: People were expecting the McLaren-to-Mercedes move as going from a fast car to a slow one. At least for the first quarter of the season, I don't think that will be the case. And McLaren messed up strategy once more, always being on the edge about taking risks.

Rosberg in the wet was epic :D
As was Vettel going fastest on his lap, and finishing it on the last second, so he had one more lap, in case anyone went faster. That's something RB excel at. Rare the qualifying, that Vettel isn't among the last to go over the line.

5 hours until the start now - I don't think I'll get up, unless a bout of insomnia gets me.
Hopefully there'll be a re-run or a recorded torrent or something of that ilk. Or maybe even the BBC's highlights.
If it starts raining again, all odds are off, otherwise it's RB's once more to lose it. They have always been rather poor on race day in Melbourne. Maybe today they'll beat the statistics.

I was a bit disappointed by the Williams and Saubers, but then they have many inexperienced drivers, which never helps in the rain.

Wow. Did not see that coming.

Excellent race to start the season.

Kinda wished Sutil finished on the podium - just to piss of the established players. :p

WTF happened to McLaren?
