I thought it was a great race. Certainly closer than most RB runaways. Trend will for most of the year with the random exception. Next year will be a odd ball with the new regs.

Lotus strategy was surprising considering they only had a scrub set. But I guess RB was just a bit faster than Lotus.

Alonso was running out of fuel so couldn't overtake Romain.

Overall, a very good race with an exciting finish.

Reports are coming out that Hulkenberg doesn't have a contract with Sauber anymore and will move out of the team as soon as he get an offer from another team. It is really sad because Sauber don't have the money and is struggling financially.

Latest rumors are putting him at Lotus. Most likely replacing Kimi if he goes to RB (which I don't think will happen, to much competition for Vettel) or Romain if released. But if he keeps these runs up that likely won't happen.

Sauber is interesting in and of itself. In the telecast they were saying they are behind on their driver payments to Hulkenburg. If that's the case the chances of them developing a car next year that even remotely resembles competitive are slim. We don't need three bottom rung teams.

I thought the race was exiting. Reminiscent of pre-drs races. Kimi, Vettel, Webber, Ham, Button and Grosjean all drove good races.

Yeah, his penalties were pretty harsh.

I rather enjoyed it. Always love seeing RedBull struggle and someone other than Vettel win. This track always produces some of the least interesting races but that was not the case today.

Fairly boring race. I think Grosjean's penalties were unnecessary.

Well, the 20 second time penalty was without consequence in the end, but that stop and go ruined a potential podium.

I hope Romain keeps up the aggressive driving, without just running into people in the first corner, as spirited racing is exciting racing.

I wonder if he can take a win this season. There's still a few hot tracks, where the Lotuses are capable of racing for victory, and while it does take some bad luck for RB and Mercedes for the Lotus to truly challenge for the win, it's not impossible for that to happen.

Do you recommend watching the replay of this race? I missed watching it live, but from the reports it doesn't really sound like a classic, except possibly Vettel's move on Raikonnen at the end?

I'd recommend watching the race if you like strategies playing a major role than overtaking on track. This race was one of the few where all the front runners were pushing their car to the max. Grosjean was good in this race, so was Webber.

Agreed. I get the sense Webber, who has nothing to lose anymore, is racing more fearlessly since his retirement was announced. He has even had decent starts, which have always been his Achilles' heel.

http://www.autoblog.com/2013/07/31/ferrari-chairman-ticked-off-by-alonso/

Luca Cordero di Montezemolo does not strike us as the kind of person we'd want to cross. We imagine the Chairman of Ferrari as sort of like an automotive Don Corleone, a thought that is further confirmed when we hear about the aftermath of last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix.

Fernando Alonso made some unsubstantiated remarks that have angered his team, with The Daily Mail reporting that when asked after the race what he wanted for his birthday, the Spaniard responded "Someone else's car." And while no one seems to know exactly what was said, it was enough to prompt a personal phone call from the boss of Ferrari on Alonso's birthday for a dressing down.

Montezemolo reminded Alonso that, "All the great champions who have driven for Ferrari have always been asked to put the interests of the team above their own. This is the moment to stay calm, avoid polemics and show humility and determination in making one's own contribution, standing alongside the team and its people both at the track and outside it."

The Italian wasn't done, though, presenting each of the team's engineers with a symbolic gift – a knife to put between their teeth. We think there's a pirate reference here, but aren't certain. According to Sky Sports, he opened the post-race meeting by informing team principal Stefano Domenicalli that, "The Ferrari I saw in yesterday's race doesn't sit well with me." We aren't the only ones imaging the threatening undertones here, right?

Formula One is entering its summer break, meaning that each team has four weeks to get itself sorted out before the end-of-season grind kicks in. There's no doubt that after this very public display from Montezemolo, that Ferrari will have its nose to the grindstone.

Finally started watching the race from the weekend lol.

Vettel definitely seems to crack a bit under pressure, seeing him go off-line twice when Grosean was on him around lap 20. I bet Alonso would never do that.. I remember seeing the live race @ Montreal 2011 and Button put pressure on him and he crumbled. He's used to winning and I think he gets very panicky when it doesn't go his way.

It's been an exciting year seeing how the Lotus, Ferrari (well, early) and Merc are all putting more pressure on RB than ever, I think the post-summer break developments are going to make for a very interesting conclusion of this season. :)

At that point he already had his front wing damage right? And had an extremely hot car from all those laps behind button running in dirty air?

I watched it pretty late at night but I'm pretty sure all that happened later in the race - I could be wrong. I was referring to when Grosean was on his ass early (laps 10-20 or so), Vettel went off track twice in one lap and seemed much more stressed under that pressure than say Hamilton, Button or Alonso would be. He locked up trying to pass Button a few times and then busted up his wing probably all part of his frustration. I'm sure the hot temperatures were due to his inability to pass for lap after lap. Maybe the RB is a hard car to get around other cars, we know it's super fast on its own, but wheel to wheel maybe that's where it's weak: the crazy aerodynamics require clean air and no traffic to really shine. Just a theory.

Kimi to Ferrari could be a possibility.
Alonso away from Ferrari? Less plausible.

If Ferrari have shown Kimi a 2014 entrance that promises better things, than RB can offer, and Massa goes to a second-tier team (where as an experienced driver he'd be quite welcome), I could imagine that to happen. Kimi racing alongside Alonso would probably be a bit more awkward, than Kimi racing alongside Seb though.
Finally, I think Kimi has one reason not to go back to Ferrari - he will likely lose some of the happy-go-lucky free reign, that Lotus gives him, and Red Bull is more likely to give him than Ferrari. He has a character, and I'm not sure the current Ferrari situation can handle that.

Alonso is so closely tied to Ferrari, I doubt that Santander and Red Bull could come to a sponsoring agreement.

Or maybe Kimi just bought an F12 :D

Kimi's manager told the press a couple days ago that he's out of the running for the RB seat. That makes Ricciardo the sole candidate.
Kimi might go to Ferrari or even Mclaren. At this stage it's all speculation.

At first it looked like Ricciardo was pretty much confirmed, but RB backtracked a little and are now not going to announce the 2nd driver until Monza. Many rumors say that Kimi signed a 2 year deal with Ferrari and RB are out to try and make a one last attempt.

Well, that was a fun quali session.
I did expect the Force India to stay in front, until it became clear how much the track had dried out
Also, great drive by van der Garde. Making his way to become Rookie of the year, and may well find himself in a faster car next year.
