Forgot about my hamburger in the fridge...

Well, I bought some ground hamburger about 5 days ago and forgot to grill it... it's completely dark on the outside now and I think it's gone bad.

There goes $7 of meat. 🙁

my wife does this about once a month, it really pisses me off to waste money like that :frown:

You can still cook it and eat it. It just won't taste the same.

That doesn't cange the fact that toxins have built up in the meat that won't cook out.

You could always spice it heavily to cover up the taste.

What toxins in particular?

If you have a dog, you could cook some up and offer it to him/her. If they don't touch it, then you wasted $7. If they eat it, well, they have premimum dog food this week.

/Again I suggest not following my advice, but, I post it anyway.

why dont you take care of it then bigboy!!!
Since your apparently infallible

the darkness is just from oxygen. does it smell kind of sweet? if so, its fine still IMO. if it starts to turn rancid after the sweetness smell, then it is bad. i worked in a meat department for 2 years....its probably fine.

i noticed it last time and fried it up myself, but i almost burned half of it. i put the second half on the stove and then got onto ATOT and nearly burned it up after i was distracted by a thread regarding hamburger or something 😉

I really don't know, but there is a reason it has a special word associated with it: Rancid. The taste/smell associated with it are byproducts of the bacteria breaking down the meat, and although cooking it will kill the bacteria it will not remove these byproducts. Calling them toxins may be a bit extreme as they probably won't kill you or anything. People have been eating rancid meat since the dawn of time because sometimes that is all they had, but I would argue that you are probably better off not eating it.

Maybe if you leave it in there long enough, it will come alive like that hamburger in Better Off Dead.

Rancidty is caused by the breakdown of fats by molecular oxygen in the presence of light, heat, time, etc. The production of ketones leads to the off flavors and rancid smell. It will not kill you, but it will not taste right.
