Forget speed limits, enforce "Slower Traffic Keep Right"

This is not the reason I speed. I do not speed because I'm in a hurry. I speed because I hate driving and feel like travel time is wasted time. It is most definitely not about being in a hurry to me. It's about efficiency.

im in this boat. id prefer if slower drivers would stay to the right or try to maximize the efficiency of traffic...i dont blaze past people, but i do pass people regularly enough.

i also get out of the way if someone is trying to pass me, or speed up in order to get out of the way if theres a crowd of cars that want to go faster than me.

/not perfect, but i try to be considerate for the most part

I'm a good driver. Slower doesn't mean not going the speed limit. I go the speed limit at all times. Accelerate slower than the norm and taking everything a bit easier. That's all. You should never need to go faster than 55. Seriously. That's 55 miles per HOUR. That's a great distance.

With dry roads, daylight, and lighter traffic I usually go at least 80mph on the freeway.

Your a freaking rookie! Sheese on long trips I set the cruise control at 95....hell when my Father had his heart attack several months ago, the hospital was 118 miles from where I live. I jumped on I-5 at 10 PM and was at the hospital in 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Some drivers are a hazard to other motorists at 5mph less than the speed limit and others are of no additional risk to anyone at 15mph over the limit.

Do me a favor, do 90mph, get pulled over, and tell the officer that exact same thing. Then, in court, tell the judge that exact same thing. Let us know how that works out for you.

If you aren't passing, you should be in the right lane. If you are on a one lane road and there are more than five cars piled up behind up, pull off on the first turnout. I've done both these things, though I'm more often the person that is waiting for someone to pull right so I can pass.

That said, OP, you are creating a hazardous traffic situation and being an asshole. You do not get to "educate" other drivers on the road.

Any time you use your speed or car position to force another driver to do anything (and that applies to you "I'm being tailgated so I slow way down" people) you are creating a road hazard and inviting road rage. That is far less safe than the situation originally was.

I myself, on major highways, will do 10-14MPH over when I can. I will move over to let someone pass when possible. And around here some drivers do not pay attention to anything. Yesterday there was a major wreck on RT80 eastbound by RT513 .. overturned tank trucker. Some jackass did not see a Fire Truck coming up on her in the left lane / shoulder trying to get to the wreck. So instead of moving out of the way of an Emergency Vehicle (lights and siren on) her got was rear ended and totalled.

Ummmm....wow. That's some pretty bad reasoning. Assuming that a statistic quoted earlier is correct, that speed and accident frequency are not correlated, you forget one crucial fact: the difference between 5-under (60mph) and 15-over (80mph) is an increase of about 33% in velocity but it's an increase of about 78% in kinetic energy. The more kinetic energy a vehicle has on impact the more likely someone is to be injured. You might not be at increased risk of being in an accident (I find that "statistic" to be highly dubious) but you definitely are an additional risk to everyone as either you or someone else is much more likely to be seriously injured or killed.

There are several roads in the area where people typically drive in the left lane & pass in the right lane. Most of the people are smart enough to understand why & don't begrudge them for having to pass on the right instead of the left (the left lane is in great condition, the right lane is full of poorly filled potholes that stick up above the road surface a little bit, else are just a little below the road surface.)

Otherwise, I rarely encounter people who don't drive in the right lane when they're driving slower. Must be we have better drivers in this area. However, when traffic is moderately congested, i.e. typical traffic on the NYS thruway, I never cease to be amazed at the number of asshats who live and die by this "keep right" think. All the traffic in the right lane is going 65. All the traffic in the left lane is going 75. If you move from the left lane into the right lane, you're going to be locked into the right lane for the next 5 miles as a line of traffic slowly passes you at 75 mph. However, there will always be a dozen asshats in that line who think they own the road and that everyone not going 90 should get the hell out of their way. So, to those guys, "fuck you."

Now, since I rarely see people camped in the wrong lane, I have to wonder if some of the people complaining about people in the left lane are the asshats who simply believe that they're above everyone else on the road simply because they want to drive faster than traffic is going to allow.

I went to RIT for a year, I live out near Boston. The drivers on the NY Thruway were, in general, the best I've ever encountered. If there was a car hogging the left lane and not using it for passing, it was usually an MA plate. Everybody else stayed right except when passing. It's even a better driving experience than northern NH. So you may rarely see people camping in the wrong lane on the Thruway, but that seems to be a novel thing. Everywhere else, people just take whatever lane they feel like using and don't care about anyone else.

But there is no "fast lane" in the US...it may be the passing lane, but driving in that #1, or inside lane doesn't allow you to drive faster than the posted limit...most people seem to miss that fact.

Technically you CAN drive faster than the speed limit if driving the speed limit is too slow for the flow of traffic and causes a danger but obviously that'll never happen.

If you see someone coming up behind you driving faster than you, pull over to the right lane. Most people seem to miss that fact. It's not your job to force people to stay behind you. In fact it's illegal to do so as I pointed out in the other thread we had about this.

Err, you know you're more dangerous than the people driving ~75 on the Interstate, right? You'd better be able to maintain whatever the speed limit sign says on the free way, whether it be 65 or 'speed of traffic'.

Drivers that think they can get on an expressway at 45-55 are going to cause an accident and it will be their fault entirely.
