Forget speed limits, enforce "Slower Traffic Keep Right"

I realize it's more difficult to enforce than speed limits, but it also could be a really good way to reduce traffic congestion, accidents, and road rage.

People who sit in the left lane, with cars lining up behind them (and a big gap between them and the car ahead) slow everyone else down unnecessarily.

On my daily commute I'm one of the fastest people on the freeway (I pass people, they don't pass me), and I gladly educate other drivers if they don't get in the right lane when they're supposed to. I'll pass them on the right, then slow down ahead of them in the left lane. When they go into the right lane to pass me, I speed up and leave them where they should've been in the first place: far behind me in the right lane.

I am somewhat of a slower driver. I don't want to push my car more than I have to in order to get somewhere. You speeders are greedy and spoiled. It took years to go where we go in a week.

To be honest, I feel no sympathy towards speeders. How about manage your time a little better before crying about shit that doesn't matter? Also most speeders, as skilled as they think they might be, are terrible and risky drivers. I don't want my roads unsafe like that.

You have a fundamental misunderstanding about the actual purpose of traffic enforcement.

[...]How about manage your time a little better[...]

This is not the reason I speed. I do not speed because I'm in a hurry. I speed because I hate driving and feel like travel time is wasted time. It is most definitely not about being in a hurry to me. It's about efficiency.

You can listen to podcasts, audiobooks, language learning tapes, or something else to keep your time efficient. Better yet if you took public transportation you could read, sleep, work, and be even more efficient!

If you time your BMs right before you take a shower you can get away without wiping and be even more efficient! :awe:

The bill is in the mail.

The OP has already identified himself as a douche-bag...I'll be waiting for his "I had an accident" thread, or his "I got a speeding ticket" thread...and will laugh uncontrollably when it happens.

Assholes who do what he described:

Deserve to lose their license. They're a bigger problem on the road than the ones who drive slow in the inside lanes.

But hey...you sure showed them.

It's also a good way to reduce revenue from handing out tickets... I'm sure speed limits would be more lax if there was a better way to make money off it. ;)

Not really.

It's about raising money, mainly, but for public consumption it's also about keeping people safe.

Vehicles travelling in the same direction at the same speed cannot hit one another, so it makes as much sense to put faster people in one lane as it does to ensure people go at a constant speed.

Meh, it's never fast enough for speeders, even in the fast lane there are always guys riding bumpers, even though they are going well above the speed limit.

So your solution to dealing with people you consider bad drivers is to be a bad driver yourself? :cookie;

I take other measures to be efficient, it's not just when I drive. I don't go as far as your sarcastic post implies, though.

I've been driving about 35-40 minutes one-way as my daily commute for a long time. I've also had only one speeding ticket, ever.. and that was 10 years ago. I know where I can speed and under what conditions (weather, traffic, time of day/night). I always pay attention to the road and vehicles around me. I've had no accidents, or even any close-calls.

I make no apologies about how I drive. If someone has a problem with how I drive they're perfectly free to get out of my way.

I agree with the fact that slower drivers should be in the right lane. The left lane is the "passing" lane. Not the cruising lane. I understand it won't be perfect, but I hate it when there are cars going side by side and I'd like to pass. That to me is the entitled attitude of, "I own the road and I won't let you speed". Or half the time they are clueless to their surroundings.

I don't speed because I'm constantly late. I just prefer to get to my destination as quickly as possible. I do not get back in front of cars and slow down though. OP that's a douche move and surely only going to cause road rage. I just prefer not to drive around other cars. If there is open road ahead I'll speed up to pass then once I'm a good distance ahead coast back down closer to the speed limit. I've seen people do too much dumb shit to want to drive near all the idiots in Oklahoma.

reminds me of george carlin: "If god exists, may he strike this audience dead."

*audience lives*

"okay, lets up the ante. if god exists, may he strike me dead."

The post actually started off as a serious, constructive post on how to get stuff done during your commute, but then I started to elaborate and somehow it turned to ass.

I hate people like the OP as well, they are the ones that NEVER leave a safe distance between cars, will cut in front of people at extremely close and dangerous proximities, and have no patience.

Honestly, when I see someone like that riding my ass while I'm passing someone, I slow down (only if he is the only one waiting, I don't do that for multiple people).

Most retarded thing I've heard all day. Most people can't even drive a car when all their focus is on it. Let alone multitask while doing so.

And there isn't public trans available for everyone.

Yes, that's quite annoying.

I don't much care what they think of me doing that. If they're going to inconvenience me by driving slow in the left lane when there's plenty of room in the right lane I'm going to inconvenience them.

I'd say at least 50% of the time someone sitting in the left lane going slow is somehow distracted, usually with a phone or intense in-car conversation with passengers.

And it's people like you that make people like the OP do it even more. Also attributes to road rage...albeit that's on both parties. Why is it so hard to get over to the right?

It's so rare around here that when people actually do get over I'll give a friendly wave and nod.

With dry roads, daylight, and lighter traffic I usually go at least 80mph on the freeway.

i maintain 80 as well. i only get annoyed if there's nobody in front of the car in front of me and the person is driving between 60-70 mph. if there's several cars, i slow down and maintain space.
