There are exclusives for the PS3 however, aka, the games that take full advantage of everything the PS3 has to offer (cell, blu-ray disc, harddrive space). Once they come out, the PS3 will really pick up the pace :)

Also, I'd like to add that development for both the 360 and PS3 has gotten me worried because games like GTA4 will probably have to chop content so that the game can be played on the 360. As we know, MGS4 uses an entire blu-ray disc. Porting it to the 360 would definitely require some chopping or multiple discs. In the case of MGS4, multiple DVDs may work. But in a seamless game like GTA4, the PS3 version will have to get chopped. That.. or get exclusive content. Hopefully the latter ;)

Sony's revival efforts, led by Welsh-born American Howard Stringer, Sony's first foreign chief executive, may finally be starting to pay off. After taking the helm in 2005, Stringer got Sony to drop unprofitable businesses, sell off assets, reduce jobs and shutter plants. But losses from PS3 remain Sony's biggest headache.
He should have cut the PS3 while he was it. It's losing more money than anything else.

you know sony bought Vanguard :p

Sony buys Sigil Games (makers of Vanguard Saga of Heroes)

sony lied
2. We do not plan on making any major changes to Vanguard.

TODAY's headlines

Sony fires Sigil Games employees
IT SEEMS THAT Sony has decided to fire all the employees who worked for its chum Sigil Games.

The maker of the praise-challenged and unfinished MMORPG, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes was getting into trouble with its partner Sony recently.

According to Kotaku employees were told to meet outside, yesterday. When they did their employment was terminated.

A post further explained that some of them could be picked up by their glorious new overlords Sony Online Entertainment.
everyone got fired

i think that is a 'major change' as the Sony monkeys attempt to screw online MMORPGs up for the disaster that is PS3

Wow, huge thread, and I'm sure this has been said several times now, but consoles normally go through various revisions to the insides. Functionality stays the same, only new innards cost less to produce.

The only time we'll really have a problem with consoles is when two different versions of the same game have to be made to work on two different versions of the same console.

i guess you are expecting fresh news

well here it is .... news that is "a'poppin' fresh" ... today's news:

No plans to bring 80GB PS3 to Europe, says Sony
A Sony spokesperson has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that an 80GB PlayStation 3 is to go on sale in Korea - but said there are currently no plans to launch the model in Europe.

News of the 80GB version emerged via a statement on the Sony Korea website, which said the 80GB version will launch there on June 16 priced at KWR 518,000 (EUR 412).

for their Korean fans? :p

and of course from our old friends:

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=39741
A HUGE ROAR has erupted from the wibbly web this weekend, as Blizzard lifted the lid on what will surely become another massive multi-million seller for the company best know for producing World Of Warcraft.
[Starcraft 2]
some were expecting another MMORPG with a Starcraft-themed backing. Fortunately, a good old RTS is in the offering, and we can finally get back to one of the finest top-down resource-gathering games in history, brought up to speed for gaming rigs of 2007.

Sales figures from the console world were as interesting as ever this month, as the latest NPD sales numbers were released for April 2007.

The Playstation 2 continues to conquer all, with 194,000 sold, but April was not kind to big brother Playstation 3. Sony's newest console moved only 82,000, nearly a 50,000 drop from March's 130,000.

Elsewhere, Microsoft may have doubled PS3 at 174,000, but experienced a dip from March's 199,000. In fact, Nintendo was the only company to experience an increase, with 360,000 units in April, compared to March's 259,000.

...

PS3/PSP
It's been another bad week for Sony PR, with news of poor sales, poor profit figures, and a number of software studios complaining about the price of the PS3.

Sony has announced that the launch of the Playstation 3 has contributed to a 68 per cent drop in operating profits to JPY 71.8 billion (EUR 438.3 million) for the year ended March 31, compared to 226.42 billion (EUR 1.38 bn) a year earlier.

"In the Game segment, there was a significant operating loss as a result of the sale of PS3 at strategic price points lower than its production cost during the introductory period," said the company in its annual report.

Sony seemed to blame the available software for the poor performance of the PS3 in the charts.

"PS3 did see a dip in sales in April that we attribute mostly to a lack of new software in the market," said Dave Karraker, Sony Computer Entertainment America's Sr. Director of Corporate Communications, pointing to games like Heavenly Sword and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune as heavy hitters meant to spur sales in 2007. "We feel strongly that this robust library will help drive hardware sales in the upcoming months."

As 1up points out, if April was tough, May looks bleaker. Karraker wouldn't speculate on sales, but outside of MLB 07: The Show's release at the end of April, there are no first-party releases coming to PS3 in May - in fact there are only two May PS3 games: Surf's Up and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, both of which are multi-platform releases.

Others have been keen to point the blame squarely at Sony.

Yves Guillemot, president and CEO of Ubisoft, told Reuters that Sony will "for sure" have a "lower" market share than before due to the Playstation 3's cost. Guillemot, who declined to elaborate, lays it out with this simple quote, "They have to decrease the price quite significantly." Ah this is the kind of in-depth analytical information we pay these head-honchos for...

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz in an interview at the Nordic Game conference Nana On-Sha boss Masaya Matsuura of Parappa fame, observed that the PS3 is "currently" lagging behind but added, "of course they have a chance to recover over time".

He also said he believes the reason the Wii is outdoing PS3 in the sales stakes is because Sony's next-gen console is "too big" for Japanese consumer tastes.
the playstaton3 continues to slide ....

Maybe Sony should give away 100,000 units ... hmmm

oops missed this ... and the post was getting long anyway

the news seems it can only get better for nintendo:

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=13922
LA Times: Japanese Dev Shift From PS3 To Wii?

LA Times: Japanese Dev Shift From PS3 To Wii? A new mainstream press story on Sony's PlayStation 3, this time from the Los Angeles Times, has quoted a Japanese representative from the IGDA who suggests that many studios may be shifting their focus to the Wii and away from Sony?s console.

The article quotes Kyoshi Shin of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) in Japan as saying, "When people talk about the PS3 on chat forums they say it's like going to a very expensive restaurant and not getting anything to eat," perhaps a reference to Ken Kutaragi?s famous quote given to IT Media in reference to the console's high price -- ?Is it not nonsense to compare the charge for dinner at the company cafeteria with dinner at a fine restaurant??

The article uses sales figures of 1.2 million PlayStation 3s in the U.S. from November to March, with 2.1 million Wiis sold during the same time and 5.3 million Xbox 360s in eighteen months. A 700 percent increase in Blu-ray movie sales in the two months since the PlayStation 3?s release is also noted.

theinq commented on the above
Eidos has confirmed the Wii debut of iconic character Lara Croft, with a version of Tomb Raider: Anniversary already in development.

The title is a remake of the original Tomb Raider game and has already been announced for the Playstation 2, PSP, and PC

"The Nintendo Wii is a hugely innovative games console and we wanted to make a special version of Anniversary to appeal to Wii owners," commented Kathryn Clements, brand manager at Eidos.

"The Wiimote and Nunchuck controller allows Wii gamers to control Lara in brand new, unique ways, and there are plenty of new features, to be revealed soon, which will ensure Anniversary really hits the spot," she said.

When I quit playing Halo 3 Beta last night, there were 8254 players playing. Pretty good for 3:30am and an unreleased game.

Until PS3 can get a game to generate this much buzz, it is indeed doomed.

the PC is *evolving* to become a truly wireless medium [as Gates envisioned] in every room ... the *center of entertainment* in the home

the Console *cannot* become that home entertainment system ... it is fated to sit next to the Big TV in the living room

otOH, With multicore poised revolutionize video HW -cheaply - it will make the PC do what consoles do right now ...

so where does that leave the consoles ... in say 5 years? :p

competing against a cheaper and wireless PC entertainment - in every room ;)

it's a very possible future with the PC finally *winning*

Perhaps on the day that I can buy a $400 PC that can play every game available without issues and last me 4-5 years. And not be obsolete by the end of its lifespan. But I just don't see that day coming very soon. Video cards alone still will be more expensive than entire consoles. With consumers balking at paying $500 for PS3s , where does that Leave a Gaming PC rig that will cost at least twice as much and have a useful lifespan 1/4th as long?

I think Cormack's thoughts on this matter were made clear when ID switched their lead development platform from PC to XBOX360.

You can talk about raw power, upgrade-ability and versatility till your blue in the face. But at the end of the day its about the games. And when pretty much all of the major game developers are now developing for the consoles 1st and the PC gets a half assed port IF were lucky its not a good sign. Is it worth it anymore to even have a bleeding edge gaming rig for a bunch of lame console ports and maybe, maybe 3 or 4 truly great PC games a year?

Yeah I can say the same about most consoles, very few decent games that interest me.

PC gaming isnt dying nor is Console gaming

Head over to gametankings.com Out of the Top 20 rated games released in the passed few years, like 4 are PC titles the rest are console games. Plenty of great games still being put out. Never said PC gaming is dying but it has been relegated to a niche market and thats unfortunate.

Because the cost of being a PC gamer has skyrocketed the past few years. Big expensive monitors, need faster CPU, better video card (SLI maybe), 5.1 surround...

With a Console now you have the same graphics technology being put to use. Big TVs with 5.1 surround are already in many homes. The real gain? No need to upgrade for the newer games. Witha PC you're forced to upgrade with new standards (DX10 is one example), for faster speeds. On a console it works 100% out of the box, as they intended. You can even patch the games with updates through XboxLive now.

There will be no updated console...they can't even get the current PS3 to sell worth a damn atm.

can we get back to the topic ...

and the "usual" flames and fluff

it's about the *future* of Video games ;)

Until everyone agrees with you this is gonna be a never ending thread. We are all just going in circles IMO. I'll start first. The PC/Wii will rule all and the PS3 and 360 will fail because they are to much like PC's.

Still gonna get a 360 at the end of the year though :D

The Wii will die out because it's a gimmick...all the games are just like the gamecube titles. There's alot of first party mario type games. There is not enough good 3rd party games. There are games that were supposed to be killer like red steel, and they turn out to be garbage. The 360 has the best library, best upcomming library and most support in North America ATM. With many companies planning to make their once PS3 exclusive titles, multiplatform and create an Xbox360 version as well. There's many rumors of the next Metal gear and Final Fantasy showing up on the 360 due to the success of XboxLive and the console's popularity in this region.

The gamecube had less hardware power than either the PS2 or Xbox, and sold poorly. Even the lower price of the gamecube wasn't enough to get the numbers up. This time around though Nintendo has a winner. Something about the Wii draws people to it, and given the past nintendo console it's not the price or the graphics. Is it possible that the controller is what is drawing people? Is it really that impressive? Or could it be the games, namely Zelda? I'm going with the games, and as such I will hold out on the PS3 untill it gets it's exclusives out there (read Final Fantasy). The same goes for the 360. PC gaming, on the other hand hasn't had anything new in the game area for awhile (excluding Stalker). IMO it NEEDS a popular game to push the sell of new graphics cards.

The Wii is a gimmick...look at the games out and honestly tell me it doesn't look like the same types of games the gamecube had but with a new controller.
