So long as consoles are sold at a loss, they will be cheaper than PCs. They will also have access to the same tech as PCs.
PCs are too complicated for children and the computer-illiterate population.

You can argue about quad cores and graphics cards all you like but consoles are a lot more entertaining for me because they have brought gaming to the mainstream and since I'm probably the only person in my circle of friends who has a pc built this century the only way I can play video games with friends is to embrace the dark side and play xbox. I haven't stayed up till the early hours playing a pc game since maybe Half Life but now I often get so hooked in a Live! game that I can't help myself. I guess if you have loads of friends with gaming pcs this doesn't apply but for me pc gaming is either solitary or putting up with l33t dudes, at least with Live! I can play with my friends.
Another pain I had with pc gaming was getting everything to work as it should, you can cry 'omg learn to update drivers' or accuse me of being an idiot all you like but there's no doubt by the fact that many gaming boards are inundated with people complaining about such and such game crashing, having to roll back drivers or use awkward workarounds that it's a valid issue. Knowing you can just put the disc in and it's just gonna work is a godsend.
And unless you've never heard of the internet console games aren't as expensive as people make out. I live in rip off Britain and still haven't paid more than £25 (the rrp is about £50 I think) for a new 360 game which isn't all that more than I pay for pc games.

Well, my 360 runs very cool thanks to the intercooler I bought for it. Before I bought it, if I touched the top of the xbox after a couple hours of playing, it was burning hot to hte touch. It would even lock up on me sometimes after lengthy sessions. After I slapped the intercooler on it, the top of the unit is actually cool to the touch and no more lock ups. I'm still amazed by the extremely hot air that intercooler spits out the back of the unit.
As for the noise... meh... I put up with my X1900XTX stock cooler and NOTHING is louder than that.
Besides, when I'm really into whatever 360 game I'm playing, I've got the surround sound on and there is no chance in hell I can hear the 360 at all.
I still dont get why people complain about the 360's noise level so much. Do they play in complete silence? Are they sitting right next to the unit? *shrug*

Definitely grab some external cooling, mine RRoD after 6 months, while my bros', that was purchased 4 months or so before mine ( almost 1 1/2 yrs now), is still going strong, he bought a intercooler for his within the first 2 months. Yes, it is anecdotal evidence, but good enough for me to have added cooling to the replacement MS sent.Originally posted by: jiffylube1024
I got an Xbox360 recently and love it. Boots quickly, it's got some very fun games already (Gears of War, Lost Planet, NBA 2k7, etc). Halo 3 should be awesome like the first two. No crashes so far but I am going to purchase some kind of fan for it - it runs hotter than I would like.

Apoppin you're just recycling the same old arguments against the Xbox360 and it makes you sound like you have little to no experience with the system itself.
While X360 is one of the loudest consoles ever -- it's still not that loud! Even when the fan spins up in a heavy gaming session, that's usually when the sound is blaring in the game. If you're right by the system then yes, you can hear it pushing air, but if it's in your A/V rack or wherever, it's not even a distraction. And with everything wireless, it makes sense to just stash the system close to the TV.

Xbox 360 games now look better than ever in VGA
Although the new Windows Live Messenger integration and improved Achievements system are the more widely advertised new features of the Spring Update, a little known new feature has crept its way into the latest Dashboard version ? improved image quality when using the Xbox 360 VGA output.
A long-standing complaint of the VGA output on the Xbox 360 is its ?washed out? picture quality, where colors on the screen would not appear as bright and vibrant as compared to running the console to the TV using component cables.
The culprit for this problem is the difference between how HDTV and PC displays interpret black levels. A correctly calibrated HDTV typically expects a black level to be at 7.5 IRE (with anything below that to be ?blacker than black?), while a PC display has its black set to zero. The Xbox 360, which is tweaked for televisions, has its IRE tuned for the HDTV norm of 7.5 IRE.
However, due to the fact that most HDTVs manufacturers expect that VGA inputs are for use with PCs rather than the Xbox 360, most televisions have its IRE for VGA at zero to accommodate a PC video card?s output. The result of this is that while the Xbox 360 is sending out a 7.5 IRE for calling for black, the HDTV is interpreting that as a call for something less than black, like a pleasant shade of grey.
The Spring Update adds a new feature allowing users to tweak the IRE setting that the Xbox 360 sends out to the television. ?Both Xbox 360 Elite and current Xbox 360 units will have a spring (console) update which adds support for different video levels for VGA output (?7.5 IRE vs 0?) ... using this setting you should be able to use computer monitors in addition to TVs with resolutions all the way up to 1080p with high fidelity and no issues with HDCP handshaking,? explained Amir Majidimehr, VP of Microsoft?s Consumer Media Technology Group. ?So for current users, I highly recommend trying this update with your VGA connection to see if it does the job for you. Note that this is a console update and will work for both games and of course, HD DVD.?
Surprisingly, instead of giving the user direct control of the IRE setting, the Spring Update added three non-descriptive options to the Xbox 360 display settings ? standard, intermediate and expanded ? with no indication of which setting represents what level of blackness. DailyTech decided to put each of the three levels to the test. Presented in the images to the right is a comparison of each of the three reference levels using Need for Speed Carbon as the test game and King Kong as the test HD DVD. ?Standard? appears to retain the same black level setting (7.5 IRE) as it was before the update, and the ?expanded? setting looks to present the blackest blacks (0 IRE), with the ?intermediate? setting being somewhere in between.
While the increased richness and color in Need for Speed Carbon is noticeable, the more appreciable difference of the new IRE settings comes when watching movies. In all parts of King Kong, but especially the dark scenes where accurate black levels are essential, the new ?expanded? reference level produced images that were far richer and less washed out, providing a significantly improved picture.
HALO 3 has officially been given a release date of September 25.
. . . it's the graphics that are looking dated, with X360 owners familiar with Gears of War lamenting the lack of detail in the uprated Halo engine compared to the Unreal 3 Engine
Most people expected Halo 3 to arrive in time for Christmas, to be the season's best seller, but we're all in for a treat early, it seems. Of course, the official date is rather a set back from the one originally announced by Bill Gates, who remarkably assured the press that Microsoft would launch Halo 3 on the same day Sony launched the PlayStation 3.
Sony to Lose $413M in Video Games Unit
By YURI KAGEYAMA
The Associated Press
Thursday, May 17, 2007; 12:47 AM
TOKYO -- Sony will lose about 50 billion yen ($413 million) in its video games business this fiscal year, and recovery won't come until the arrival of more games to play on the PlayStation 3 machine, a company executive said Thursday.
"The main point is that the PS3 will still be producing operating losses," Senior Vice President Takao Yuhara told a small group of reporters at Sony Corp.'s Tokyo headquarters.
On Wednesday, Sony reported that losses for the January-March quarter widened to 67.6 billion yen ($563 million) from a 66.5 billion yen loss a year earlier, largely on launch costs for the PlayStation 3, which went on sale in November in Japan and the U.S., and in March in Europe.
But Sony, which makes Vaio personal computers and Walkman portable music players, forecast a record profit for the fiscal year through March 2008 at 320 billion yen ($2.7 billion).
Booming sales of flat-panel TVs and digital cameras that have been lifting sales are expected to continue and boost Sony's earnings in coming months, Yuhara said.
Although PS3 losses are expected to shrink with cost cuts this fiscal year, the key lies in having Sony and outside game-makers produce attractive games to play, which fully exploit the machine's expensive technology, he said.
"What's most important is software," Yuhara said. "In every region, our software lineup will be strengthened."
Sony's revival efforts, led by Welsh-born American Howard Stringer, Sony's first foreign chief executive, may finally be starting to pay off. After taking the helm in 2005, Stringer got Sony to drop unprofitable businesses, sell off assets, reduce jobs and shutter plants. But losses from PS3 remain Sony's biggest headache.
Intense competition with Nintendo Co.'s hit Wii, with its unique wand controller, also has hurt PS3.
Sony shipped 5.5 million PS3 machines in the fiscal year through March 31, fewer than the 6 million the company had targeted. Nintendo shipped 5.84 million Wii machines worldwide during the same period.
