PIONEER DECIDED TO attack the mainstream market with the introduction of the of BDC-2202, an internal Blu-ray.

This drive will come to market in early June, and will sport a price of $299.

Physical characteristics of the drive speak of BDC-2202 being an BD/DVD combo drive, with the ability to read BD media at two different speeds (2x and 5x), depending on the type - and write on regular DVD and CD media.

The drive comes bundled with software that enables viewing the Blu-ray content and creation of personal DVD movies and slideshows, so owners of this drive will be able to watch DRM-empowered content, and of course, nor be able to write anything in HD quality.

The $299 price is neat, unless you need only a read-HD media function. But, at $199 Toshiba's HD-DVD drive is a steal, especially given the fact that you can use it on PC.

And with some appropriate drivers, you can even read files.

It seems that the early adopter phase is slowly coming to a close, and more mainstream-pricing products are set to arrive. Only problem we could find here is that both Blu-ray and HD-DVD failed to capture interest from people.

If you're now scratching your head in wonder, answer is pretty simple: James Bond: Casino Royale was touted as best selling BD movie, conveniently "forgetting" the fact that tens of thousands of PS3 buyers received a coupon for free BD featuring the very same "best-selling" movie.

So PS3 buyers got a BD movie with their purchase, and SO MANY PS3's where purchased right? Enough to completely throw out the accuracy of the numbers right?
.......give me a break you say PS3 isn't selling all that well (and I tend to agree with this)........so how could a free gift given away with those purchases change the numbers THAT much? Either PS3's are selling (the statement "tens of thousands of PS3 buyers" kinda supports that), or the success to James Bond isn't due to PS3 giving out free copies of it. Apoppin trying to have his cake and eat it too huh?

Well, since High-def movie sales have barely broken the million barrier, a few ten thousand free movies could really make a difference...

Blu-ray booster 'Casino Royale' was March's top next-gen title, handedly surpassing HD DVD's biggest seller for the month, 'The Departed.' Meanwhile, HD DVD backers say they're looking to a fourth quarter of more titles and cheaper players to close the sales gap with their rival.

According to Video Business, industry sources peg the month's high-def top title as Sony's 'Casino Royale,' which sold 59,000 copies on Blu-ray. (As reported, the studio shipped a record 100,000 units of 'Royale' to stores last month.)

HD DVD's leader was again Warner's 'The Departed,' which saw 16,000 copies move over retail counters. Though clearly trailing 'Royale,' it was still higher than the 13,000 HD DVD units of 'Departed' that sold in February.

But while HD DVD backers have pointed to the "PS3 factor" and a smaller number of HD DVD titles on the market as reasons for their less-than-stellar sales performance vs Blu-ray since the start of the year, according to Video Business, they are now counting on a fourth quarter of new titles and cheaper players to close the gap. Exclusive to HD DVD, Universal Studios Home Entertainment is planning its most aggressive line-up of titles yet for the upcoming holiday season, while a wave of low-cost, import HD DVD players are expected to fill store shelves and combat the onslaught of the PS3.

"[The] fourth quarter is really going to be a telling time," said Ken Graffeo, Universal executive VP of marketing and head of high-definition, of the format's planned marketing assault of more titles and cheaper players. "It comes down to bringing it to the general audience at a price that they're willing to pay" ....
the war goes on ... with WalMart picking HD-DVD players over BluRay.

i really try ...:p

... but i Don't follow my own motto ...

and 10,000 is 1% of 1,000,000 ... if sony sold 50,000 PS3s with free Casino Royale coupons that are being redeemed NOW - it might make the difference between 59,000 and 13,000 - over *several* months ;)

BTW - that isn't many HD movies of the top titles ... of either format

--i think people are *waiting* ... and that will *kill* the PS3

Me loves HD-DVD player.

If Blu-Ray wins, I'll just stick to my upconvert player.

theInq reviewed PS3 - today! - and gave it an enthusiastic thumbs up
--it's the *kiss* of death
:lips:

in very small part
The most striking new addition to the interface is the online store. Much has been made of Sony's first foray into a proper implementation of an on-line console, people often touting Microsoft's lead in the arena, but the Playstation Network store is far superior to Microsoft's mishmash Xbox 360 offering.

Similar to a well designed web-page, everything is easily navigable, smartly presented, and all in one place. Microsoft needs to take lessons on how to provide an online store, Sony's should serve as a very good example. ...

a Blu-ray copy of James Bond Casino Royale popped through our door several days later. Again, we were impressed at the Blu-ray implementation on the device, and coupled with the Bluetooth remote control we had additionally purchased, the movie was easy to navigate, and an absolute joy to watch on an HDTV.

The difference between DVD and the new HD format was instantly recognizable, and the PS3 does a tremendous job of playback, with the minimum noise. Again, Microsoft take note, the 360 is almost unbearable to use as a playback device.

Overall we're thoroughly impressed with the console. It's sleek, it's powerful, it's quiet, the games look awesome, and the online element has been done incredibly well.

Is it worth £425 though? No. Either go to Japan and get one half price like we did, or wait until the price drops.

See .. *fair and balanced* reporting of the console news

One thing I always like is the fact that you post the Inq. as your source, let us know that's where you got it, and then quote what they say to lessen their site hits.

Thank you. :)

(P.S. To those that don't want it, sorry for the bump. >.<)

What the hell? That is the dumbest thing I have ever read on the INQ.

Were they comparing a Blu-Ray disc with a the standard DVD?

Of course it's going to suck!

That is probably the most bias review I have ever seen.

My HD-DVD player playing HD-DVDs is PERFECT. Watching The Departed and King Kong, the quality could not be better, even on my 720p HDTV.

I've seen Blu-Ray in action and it may equal the HD-DVD movies I have seen, but in no way shape or form surpasses it. Especially if you consider that almost all the first Blu-Ray movies were encoded in Mpeg2 compared to HD-DVD's VC1.

Watching Black Hawk Down on Blu-Ray was miserable. Everything was pixelated to the point where it looked no better than my upconvert DVD player.

*Where do you think they got their "half price" PS3*
:Q

they 'half-admitted' it ... "from Japan"

.....here's the other half ... [learn to read between the lines]

"... from Sony"

this review is a "thank-you"

:gift:

get it?

note they really didn't have to wait for their Casino Royal disk .... looks like they got it all at once, threw in the movie while writing the review and "looked" at maybe one game ... it ain't "in depth" ;)

"a MONTH with the PS3" ... sure ... April 30, May 1st and May 2nd ... i could do MUCH better in 3 days with PS3 ... at least i'd review GAMES

i am still here waiting for my MB/sound drivers to DL [i almost forgot ... no cd with open box] and the manual in PDF :p

hmmm ... maybe sony should send me a PS3 ...

that would shut me right up

And the current winner on the expression count of this page is...
:p

It was a tough battle, with wink right on it's heels, but with only a few posts left for this page, I think it's about over folks!

I think the replay value on Nintendo's games has started to go down, or maybe it is just me. I barely ever play my DS anymore, even though I couldn't put it down when I first got it and had Final Fantasy III and Yoshi's Island DS, even got bored of Harvest Moon before I got too far in it.

I like the variety of PC games and the variety of controls. Plus I have my XBox controller hooked up to my PC for emulation and games more suitable for a console type controller. I already commented on this article before, but just thought I would put that out there.

LOL

should i change the title ... it has gone waay beyond JR's comments

from last week

http://digg.com/gaming_news/PS3_sales_s...is_week_in_Japan_Wii_sells_over_75_000
PS3 sales slump to 10,000 this week in Japan - Wii sells over 75,000

Wii sales were around 7 times as high as PS3 sales in Japan this week following the release of Super Paper Mario, which sells over 150,000 copies. PS3 sales have been decreasing week on week in Japan and are likely to drop to around 5,000 with no big new releases until July. The story is similar in the US and Europe, with Wii still being sold out.

here's what you do when you can't sell your PS3

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=39461

Sony PS3-based PSX appears on the horizon

PS3/PSP
The PS3 cell processor is more powerful than an Xbox 360 CPU claims Vijay Pande, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University and Folding@home program lead.

An Australian technology website has suggested that a revised Playstation 3 could be less than 18 months away, citing "a Sony insider" as its source.

The Smarthouse report refers to the proposed machine as a "Playstation 4", but goes on to state that it will be based on the same chipset as PS3, differing from the current model only in the "drive bay and attachment area".

According to the source, it will also include a software suite for managing streaming of content to TVs and hi-fis, and feature improved output.

This sounds sneakily similar to the previous home-entertainment version of the PS2 - the PSX. We wouldn't hold up hopes of seeing it anywhere but in Japan ....

*admission of DEFEAT*

... the article continues [if you can stand it ...]
Xbox
DigiTimes reports that the Xbox 360 will be equipped with the belated 65nm Xenos GPU later this year, with production of the new graphics chips scheduled for May.

For those of you undecided about the Elite, a newer, cooler, and cheaper Xbox 360 Elite should be here in the Autumn
, and you should probably hold off until the new units are available. Though knowing which CPU/GPU combination is within your box prior to purchasing it may prove more difficult than your decision to buy one.

Xbox360-II ...

another *admission* that the xbox is too G-D SLOW
--for future games ... Sorry current 360 owners :p

finally ... *good news for consolers* ... same article
ALTHOUGH THE WII is proving so popular that machines are still in short supply, Nintendo is promising a raft of new games for the system, which should ensure its popularity excels even further.

Wii/DS
Nintendo of Japan has revealed its line-up of first party releases for 2007 on the Wii, with the majority of the company?s previously announced titles all still scheduled for this year, including Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.

The console's library currently stands at about 44 games, and Nintendo worldwide president Satoru Iwata said that an additional 45 Wii games currently in production will be available for consumers during the second quarter of 2007.

what should i change this topic's title to?

done ... forget JR's opinion :p

Xbox360-II ...
ummm... what? you don't seem to understand the console market. there are always multiple hardware revisions. they're about reducing costs, not adding performance. and nothing here suggests that the CPU/GPU combination will be anything other than a cost cutting measure. iirc, the PS2 went from having separate EE and GS to having them integrated in one chip. eventually MS will do the same (45 nm?) in order to make the box cheaper to make.
