the 1ghz chip only requires the pencil trick to overclock, right? and not the silver metallic liquid like the XP's?
 
If someone's best local price was $99 for the K7S5A alone I could certainly understand the appeal of this deal. 🙂

It's pretty amazing that this combo can be had for $79.

Only problem I have is the local PC shop here sells the motherboard alone for $99.

To me, spending $79 and getting a 1G Duron is worth the risk.

If you can get a pretty good deal locally, that's the way to go.

I got the Duron 950Mhz version at the $89 price and it's running great at 1.2G.

The pencil trick works great on the durons for the voltage. just only have to jump one bridge for 1.85 volts

Cross the L1 bridges for the unlock. But there is no multiplier adjustment on this board so i doesnt matter
 
I got this board with their 1.2 duron combo for 119 with the ecs, don't think it's available anymore. So for $40 less, this is one hell of a deal.

My closest local shop want $129 for the K7S5A. So, with this deal, I get $50 and a 1 GHz BOXED Duron. It's hard to pass up (and I didn't).

Having said that, I do agree with your earlier statement about buying local. In most cases, if it's even close, that's what I'd do.

Got mine today. It is a retail 1 gig. As with the board, I have worked with systems involving this board alot and all have been great. Only a couple of bios updates to iron out some bugs.

 
I just tested it to see what you guys are talking about with the $89. IT shows $79 and when i go to check out it still shows $79. I just ordered 3 more. You better get them before i buy them all.

I just got notification that mine shipped too.

This was at the local Austin Fry's last Friday thru Tuesday for the same $79 + tax when Outpost was @ $99.

Maybe this week I can pick it up for $59+tax. 🙂

Can't wait until tomorrow mornings newspaper.
 
It is listed as $79 all over the site, but it goes to $89 everytime I add it to the cart. What kind of crap is that? I cleared cookies and cache and rebooted and it still does it. I even tried on a different computer. This is the stupidist thing I've ever seen. I can probably buy this at my local Fry's on Friday, but it's the principle of the thing damnit!
 
Dam this post is beating up my mailbox. I know i shouldnt of subscribed to it.

I just tried it again. even in my cart it shows up $79 still. Why dont you just call them if you want it. They are alright on the phone. I've ordered on the phone before if you really want it and your having problems.

Because fry's uses these deals to get people into the store. They have a very low margin on them and it does not add anything to the bottom line P&L.

It's the other $500 I spend when I get there they make money on - Not the stinking $79.

I hate going to that store but not near as much as my wife hates for me to go. 😉 🙂
 
Opinions please...will by current power supply meet the demands of this "combo"? I've got a power supply with only 145 watts on the 3/5 rails. And my case cooling is "non-existent".

I'm currently running an Intel "Seattle" mobo with a P2 350 MHz CPU, onboard sound, a GeForce3 Ti200 AGP Video card, and a 32X cd Rom, a TV tuner/capture card, a PCI ethernet card (cable modem) and 2 HDs (a 6.4 GB and 40 GB).

That's about it...I'm not going to install any cd burners (I have a USB external CD burner).
