Well, my trusty 1988 2.3L mustang blew a piston ring last night and scored the block. Now I'm faced with replacing the engine, or getting a new car.

It's like you can't expect a 13 year old car to be reliable anymore. I blame this entirely on Ford's poor QC. ;)

Thanks for listening, just had to blow that off.

How many miles on the engine? Just curious... my 1970 351Cleveland still had the original cross-hatch in the cylinder bores after 75k miles, of which the last 45k were driven by a maniac :)

etc.

The engine had 185K kilometers, which is about 120K miles so it's a lot for a smaller engine to handle.

It could have been worse, it could have done it in the middle of rush hour this morning. :D

I had a 1980 Ford Fairmont quite a few years ago with that engine. It was pretty durable. The timing belt went once and left me stranded, but any car with a timing belt can do that.
A chunk of one of the exhaust valves broke off another time, but the engine still ran. I just had no compression with that cylinder. I needed the car and I couldn't get it fixed at that time, so I just drove it that way for about 500 miles. It was pretty weak running on 3 cylinders like that, but it made it.

After a few years I gave that car to my sister and she drove it for a few more years. She sold it to some guy who drove it for quite a while. I haven't seen the car lately, but it might still run. When my sister sold it, the thing had about 180K miles on it.

120K miles on my Honda 2.0 liter. Runs like a champ, and I'd bet it would dust that mustang POS.

my 67 mustang is older than me and still runs strong. I was commuting 100 miles a day in it for 2 years and never had a problem (yeah right). Those V8's are great.

now that was flamebait if I've ever seen it spamboy ;) , so I'll bite.

The only way you would beat any mustang in a race is because the mustang driver wouldn't even bother trying against any Honda*

*Poster makes the above remark in jest and makes no claims to it being his actual opinion. Nevertheless, the poster has put on flame retardant clothing.

I mean nothing against Ford because I've driven my roomate's brand new cobra and that thing was a beast compared to my honda prelude. Chicks absolutely loved it too when we went to the beach. :) But yeah he's had problems with it under 24,000 miles, and gets terrible mileage comparitively. My other college buddy has got a first generation Ford Focus SE(less 1.5 years old) and my god I can't count the number of times I've had to drive him to the dealership. Luckily both car repair and recalls were covered by warranty but I mean if a car is less than 2 years old it should not be in the shop period. I mean being roomates and friends with Ford owners in my experience means having to drive them everywhere. Luckily my Prelude has sh!t for space or else I'd have to drive everybody. 130,000 miles and compression is almost even in all, all I really do is change the oil. My sister knows sh!t about her 93 Civic. Last time I checked her fluids the oil was black as night (probably 15,000 miles since the last oil change or so she said) radiator was low, reserve was empty, one freaking tire was at like 15 psi. Thing is is auto too so it runs like a little old ladies car but the reliability is second to none IMHO. I mean thing thread got me really thinking about Ford's reliability because I've also got another college friend with Ford Probe and though he hasn't had like major problems the car has little things falling and rattling all time, the window has no frame on that thing so people have just pulled aside the window and unlocked the door. Had his radio and stuff stolen three times. My friend's dad's Taurus overheats within two minutes and ecology wrecking is only offering him $100. If any wants or knows of a good junkyard my friend's dad is looking to dumping the Taurus. It's got four almost new tires so that should be worth something :) We're in southern california/Irvine car is in Long Beach area if you're interested in repairing it (probably not worth it) but you could use it for parts or what not. PM if you're interested or know of a good junkyard offering decent money :)

Honda owners are probably a bit spoled because Honda makes some really good engines, so I definately don't have anything against them except for a touch of jealousy.

You have to poke fun at the other cars out there to make yourself feel better. :p

Maybe but it probably has very low oil pressure also ;)

<< 2.3L mustang >>

LOL, no offense, but "2.3L" shouldn't be anywhere near the word "mustang."

<< you car is 13 years old! get a grip. >>

My accord was 12 years old and running fine before I wrecked it. :p

Actually, the 2.3 was a very reliable engine. You never said how many miles it had.

Another FORD acronym:
