to be fair, they probably designed this with the Ford GT in mind....i can see how having to take the cap off every lap would be annoying.

some new "technology" where ford is leading "american innovation?"

well, if it'll help me with fuel costs, then heck yeah.

but i doubt it will.

That's rather unsexy. The general idea is good as long as it can be done without mucking up the look of the car...

Personally, I've never lost a gas cap (well, never lost one that I didn't recover within minutes) and the cost of all the gas caps I'll have to replace in the lifetime of car is worth the peace of mind of knowing no one's stealing or otherwise tampering with my gas...

Sounds like an easier way to siphon gas, with gas prices these days, I don't see how it'd make sense.

How the hell does it make it easier to siphon gas? There is still the locking door covering everything. If somebody is going to go through the trouble of prying that open you think twisting your gas cap off is going to be too confusing to figure out?

If this was Toyota doing it everybody would be saying how cool it is and saying how behind all the domestics are.

my 5 year old seat has a similar system. The Door to it has a lock that engages with the central locking.

I don't understand how this is news...

It's a brushed aluminum gas door (look closely and you can see the open door behind the pump handle) and trim on a sports car (GT, I believe). When closed, it's flat. It can just as easily be body colored on a standard car.

...but then you have to undo the cap. That is all. It's not a big deal, but this is ATOT and so we'll gnash our teeth on it for about three pages, just for the hell of it.

Do you not see the top of the open door right behind the handle?

I still don't know how you can lose one. open, fill, close. Should be pretty automatic no?

You would think so, yet people actually manage to leave the entire nozzel in the car and drive down the street with it sticking out. So anything is possible. At least i've seen several pictures of it, not sure if they were fake though.

I guess there is no accounting for stupidity. I do recall one day getting a call from my sister, she couldn't figure out where the gas door release is on the car.

But to be fair, once I was driving a rental Buick and the customs agent asked me to pop the trunk and I couldn't find it anywhere so I used the key to open the truck. Then we find it in the glove compartment after we cleared custom.

Ever been distracted during one of those automatic things you do in your day to day life?

It can completely make you miss a step or two. In this case, you forget to put the cap back on.

It's happened to me a couple times in 20+ years of driving.

Good, now it will be easier for me to syphon gas.

How the hell do you lose your gas cap??? You only really need to take it off when you're filling your gas tank, and where exactly are you going to lose it? In your pocket?

I have a different problem, I can't remember if I locked the door not not. This wouldn't be a problem if it was say 1 min after I leave the door (be it car or house) but it's usually 10 min later, then I have to decide if I double back. I don't think I have ever found the door unlocked on the occations I double back...

My gas cap is the bit that unlocks, so I have to put my key in it, so if I lost it I would be screwed anyway.

I voted no because I personally have never left a cap behind.

However, during my smog check, the idiot tester didn't put the cap back on after doing the pressure test. And I didn't notice until after the smog place closed so I had to buy another one.
