And on the last one I had that did, the plastic strap broke after a few years.
Get a better piece of plastic then.

I have the plastic connector on my gas cap, I fill up at least 3 times a week and it is in mint condition.

That all depends on if you live in an area in which plastic succumbs to dry rot rather quickly or not.
I'm a northeasterner, so the weather can be harsh. The body rusts out and falls apart before my gas cap breaks.

Yep. I live in Oregon where we aren't allowed to pump our own gas and more than once in the past a stupid attendant has neglected to replace the gas cap. Thank God they attach them with a plastic strap these days.

Wow...I thought that was just New Jersey.

What's up with denying people self-serve?

Oregon and New Jersey are the only states in the country that don't allow self-serve. In Oregon, it's just a stupid old law that has its own momentum.

It's been that way in Oregon for over a decade.

Now they need to come up with a spring that reacts when the car hits 5mph to close the door so all the fools driving around looking like a dumbo ear off the side go away :p

I lost a cap once with my first car when I was 16, well I actually put it on top of my trunk when I was filing up, took off without remembering to put it back but remembered a second after taking off so backed back up to get it and ran it over :(

Learned my lesson after that :p

I've lost a few over my 35 years of driving but none since they started attaching them.

does that mean they'll start putting locking fuels doors on their cars now, like every other car company has for decades? MAN those guys are cheap. they never cease to astound me.

I was up in oregon a couple weeks ago and experienced these "Professional Fuel Fillers." It was one of the funniest things ever. I was in the back seat chatting with the guy. he was telling me that he "could not imagine why other states let people pump their own gas, the amount of gas spilt must be insane, let along the safety risks, they should leave it up to the professionals like me". I laughed my ass off right in front of him.

Keep in mind these "professionals" could make better pay working at a Wal-Mart.

Give that seal around the door and the flap about 5 years of age and miles and see if they keep the rain and road grim out of the tank.

LOL @ Ford

I still don't know how you can lose one. open, fill, close. Should be pretty automatic no?

You would think so, yet people actually manage to leave the entire nozzel in the car and drive down the street with it sticking out. So anything is possible. At least i've seen several pictures of it, not sure if they were fake though.

i wonder if this is more in response to people not tightening the cap, having the check engine light come on, and driving to the dealer.

also, it would slightly cut down on emissions (although, i'm not sure how much over a properly used gas nozzle with an emissions boot... you're supposed to leave those on for several seconds after the gas has stopped pumping so that the fumes can return to the storage tank)

In the southwest, they have hardly any rust or corrosion, but fabric and plastic dry-rots and is ruined in just a few years. It's in issue with very low humidity. Something you'll never see in the Northeast.

But yeah, I was amazed when I moved to the Midwest and saw all the rusted out cars here. The only old cars are collecters that are garaged most of the year.

In CA, people drove 30 year old beaters as daily drivers. Here a beater is a car over 6 or 7 years old. LOL

never lost a gas cap, but this wont work if you have used things like this before. you will have to replace the plastic/rubber thats surrounding the filling hose atleast every 3-5yrs because it will rot. man ford is all done they are just digging that hole deeper and deeper rofl

Ford to Get Rid of Gas Caps

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (Aug 9) - Gas caps are about to become a thing of the past on many models of Ford Motor vehicles.

The company told an automotive industry conference near Lake Michigan that the cap will disappear from its its new 2008 Lincoln M-K-S full-sized model, and that -- eventually -- all Fords will be without them.

Instead, there'll be a flap that opens under pressure from the gas pump nozzle. The flap will fit snugly to the nozzle to stop fumes from escaping.

A company official says the flap will eliminate the inconvenience of forgetting to put your gas cap back on after filling up.

The new cap comes from Ford's NASCAR racing experience and has been used on the Ford G-T.

Ford's advances and execution in the technology arena is mind boggling. First the innertube-less tires, now this.

Never lost one, but I think this is a great idea. It's easier than unscrewing the cap, so unless it costs more what is there to complain about?

then that is sucky engineering..

I actually prefer the holder to the tether. I don't really like having the cap hang against the side of car. Not sure why, I just don't... maybe I'm paranoid about dirt or something.

Same. I like my Civic's gas cap/tank door (which works the way yours does) better than my wife's TSX (which has the plastic holding the cap on).
