This idea is stupid. If Ford had any sense they'd spend their R&D funding on figuring out how to make an Expedition get 45MPG. Instead they blow funding on this kind of crap!

It's no wonder their stock is in the sh!tter!

But yeah, I was amazed when I moved to the Midwest and saw all the rusted out cars here. The only old cars are collecters that are garaged most of the year.

In CA, people drove 30 year old beaters as daily drivers. Here a beater is a car over 6 or 7 years old. LOL
Cars can still rust out prematurely here on the west coast if you happen to live really close to the ocean. Also, they sand and gravel snow-covered roads out here in the winter instead of salting them, so paint jobs take a beating.

I can't quite figure out why posters are beating up Ford over this. It's an innovation, both for convenience and emissions. And an Expedition ain't never going to get 45 mpg. Contrary to the conspiracy theories about the 200 mpg carburetor, there is only so much energy in a gallon of gas.

Just because the cap is gone doesn't mean it can't still have a locked panel, something that is only opened by pulling a lever or pushing a button inside your car. :p

The one time I drove off without my gas cap, I went back later that day and asked if they had it. The guy proceeded to pull out a box full of them and told me to pick one out. He said "never buy a gas cap, every gas station has boxes of them from all the people who drive off without them and never come back to get them. Just ask and you can have dozens to choose from."

I never lost a cap, and I've done some pretty absentminded things in my life. Regardless, why not just put a tether on the cap? Ford's solution looks awfully prone to rain and age...

Locking gas doors and gas caps are just for show. The filler necks themselves are anti-siphon, by federal law since the late 70s.

Yeah, but have you tried it since you were younger? You might want to, things have changed. Good luck too.

Well, I can't speak for all Ford products, but my old 89 Continental had a button you had to push from inside to release the gas door.

I'll reserve judgment on this idea until I see how the rubber holds up after a few years.

With the price of gas I'm surprised thugs haven't started drilling holes in the bottom of the tanks catching their loot with a pan. :Q With a hand cranked peristaltic pump (remember the B &D Jack Rabbit? Text) it would be very easy to siphon gas out of any vehicle especially if the perp used the correct hose material for the suction line. With those pumps the ticket was to crank until you had flow then back off the crank a half turn and let gravity (syphon) do its job.

The flapper is probably NORPRENE which is highly resistant to oils, acids, oxidizers, and UV radiation for long periods of time.

Most people never lose them, but in a few months working for a gas station, I've seen quite a few absent minded people leave them at the pump when they drive off.

You would think so, yet people actually manage to leave the entire nozzel in the car and drive down the street with it sticking out. So anything is possible. At least i've seen several pictures of it, not sure if they were fake though.

Yes, it's possible and it happens occasionally at every gas station.

Uh. Ford tethered my gas cap to my damned car (and the tether is annoyingly short, actually). That works very well. Even if you do manage to forget to put it on, it's still attached to the car.

Though I can see many, many people who would find that too annoying and break it off.

i lost it once, but by the time i got home (a few blocks from the gas station) i saw that i had lost the cap, so i drove back, and saw it across the street from the station.. so i guess i didn't really lose it since i still found it

What about someone pours some sand or dirt into your gas tank? You will be SOL then.

I won't buy any vehicles without lockable/secured gas caps.

if someone pouring sand into your gas tank is such a problem that you have to buy a car that locks and will not even consider others you really might want to think of a lifestyle change.

I see no reason why anyone would do it if you are not pissing people off.

Ever heard of vandalism? People that have nothing to do but mischiefs and troublemakers? I know the odd is low but why buy an "uncap" vehicle while you can have secured cap vehicle? My money = my choice. I am sure with gas price keeps going up, siphoning gas won't be far behind.

There are millions of U.S. consumers are with me because Toyota is overtake Ford as #2 automobile manufacturer. Toyota and Honda are gaining market shares while all domestics sales are down.

LOL @ Ford

Isn't there a saying, something like, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it?"
Of all the things that Ford does wrong, they've picked the one thing that every auto manufacturer never has a problem with? Personally, given the amount of problems that can be caused by the failure of that one new innovation that accomplishes nothing, I'll wait 6-8 years before ever buying a Ford.

I can't believe people are actually blasting Ford for improving something Jesus. Hell why have powerwindows? How hard is it to roll them down yourself and then there is the added expense when they break.

Neither have I.

I don't like this "idiot features" like no gas cap, auto-on headlights, rain-sensing wipers...IMHO it just coddles the bad drivers and makes it harder to pick them out. Plus, like jkersenbr mentioned...when the seal fails, you'll want to start pouring a gallon of Heet into the car every time you fill up in wet weather.

Yep. I live in Oregon where we aren't allowed to pump our own gas and more than once in the past a stupid attendant has neglected to replace the gas cap. Thank God they attach them with a plastic strap these days.

Wow...I thought that was just New Jersey.

What's up with denying people self-serve?

It's just Oregon and NJ, and IMHO it sucks.

But I could just be bitter because I had a moron in NJ spill what seemed like a half-gallon of gas down the side of my car while trying to top it off.
