The Mercury brand that is;)

Ford Motor Co (F.N) will eliminate its Mercury brand which has seen sales and investment plunge in recent years, closing out a vehicle lineup created in the 1930s by Edsel Ford, the automaker said on Wednesday.
I know that several Mercury vehicles were simply rebranded / improved Ford vehicles. In the long run, should reduce overhead. This likely should have been conducted years ago. It makes sense to have just two (mainstream and high-end) brands. Looks like no layoffs at Ford and they plan to focus their resources more on the Lincoln brand, but some dealerships might be consolidated. Mercury is now less than 1% of the market. I drive a Mercury and I learned how to drive in a Mercury, but this needs to be done to ensure Ford's well being. Not that I have any attachment to it, the next vehicle I buy will likely be an American made Toyota.

Although I believe that it is ultimately necessary, I am sad to see Mercury go. They had a bit of luxury over the usual Ford models, but at nowhere near the pricetag of the Lincolns. This has been coming for a long time. They only have four models, two of which (based on the Explorer and Crown Vic) were slated to get the axe. Mercury would have nothing left anyway if Ford didn't already have something in the works for them...

Not to worry. Ford will begin making them in China and the Mercury will be restored. Lead will be added in for free!

Good move Mercury was a shill. Duplicates from various Lincoln and Ford products for the last 20 years. This had to be confusing to buyers and offered nothing special. I'd like to see a value/sporty line from Ford sorta like Scion is for Toyota. Put the Feista, a box, new probe, and maybe focus in there.

< only buys Fords Current 07 Towncar, 01 F350, 06 Ford 500.

Mercury is now less than 1% of the market.

Yeah - even with the glut of Ford vehicles where I live I hardly ever see a Mercury. There was a niche they filled but it is clearly too small to be viable so I am not suprised to see them go.

At least they are able to do it with what seems to be a minimum of job impact
