After my teeth went through my lip when the airbag didn't go off, I won't trust them again. (I drive a Toyota Camry now).
That must have hurt. What a way to become biased eh?
Actually, it wasn't that bad at the time. When I couldn't eat for 3 days, because I was chewing on my lip (it basically popped on the inside), that sucked. Nothing like experience. I do miss driving a truck though. But not enough to go through that again.
I don't think getting smacked in the face by an rapidly expanding airbag would have helped your situation at all, and probably would have made it worse. Airbag is there to stop you from smacking your head on the steering wheel, not to keep you from biting through your lip. That's why they are set to go off ony in certain severity crash, because airbag can cause more injury than a low speed crash.
Actually, it would have. Because my face hit the steering wheel. My bottom teeth went through my bottom lip, both going through and literally popping the inside of my bottom lip. Also, the places where my lips attach was ripped some as well, and I had severe bruises where my top teeth hit my upper lip on the inside. So yea, I think it would have helped.
While wearing a seatbelt?
Yes. Not wearing a seat belt is just dumb...
