For those with DSL, is it normal to have to periodically turn off your modem and then back on...

... in order for it to work?

Every once in a while I have to do this. It's really annoying since my modem is downstairs.

I used to have VerizonDSL (well, I even had it when it was still BellAtlanticDSL) about a year ago and yes, I remember having to "power-cycle" the modem at times. Not too often though, about once every couple of weeks. Cable has been much better for me now with better uptime and higher download/upload speeds.

Did you have the gray fujitsu/orckit frame relay modem? Those suck. If nothing else I've found they're very sensitive to ventilation, keep 'em cool and in an open place.

In a perfect world?

No.

In reality? It's not terribly uncommon.

If the modem loses train, locks up, etc. power-cycling may be necessary for it to re-connect.

Put it on an X-10 connection, & restart it with the click of your mouse.

Problem solved.

I had to move it once. Had it sitting on my case and then it didn't connect. CS said "move it" I moved it. It worked.

happens occasionally. Both with my old and new modem and with my old and new service.

yes, with sbc pos service. Those sobs have come out to my house to check the line countless times. Whenever its not working or slow, i have to turn of the modem then on again. I love their tech support.

me"my dsl stopped working"
tech"when did it stop working"
me"about of couple of hours ago"
tech"plz hold"
me during the 5 min hold time"wtf"
tech comes back"apparently we have been having a problem in your area"
me"oh, when did that start?"
tech"oh, about a couple of hours ago"
me"huh, when will it end?"
tech"im sorry, i dont have an eta on that, please call back in a little while."

then when im done, i turn of the modem, turn it back on, and magically i have internet access....stupid no good techs.

Nope, I had the white westell (those verizon bastards, they tried to sell it to me for $200 when I told them that the one I bought for $100, the internal speedstream 3060, didn't work in win2k and was a POS) that a friend gave me. I am not aware of it sharing the same chipset as the one you've mentioned but the modem was in a well ventilated place.

My download speed went from 1100+ KBPS to 150 KBPS for a few days, I was going to call C.S. when I thought I would reboot my modem. After reboot speeds went back to normal.

Qwest DSL / Powered by M$N ISP

it's an Arescom 860... from what I hear there is a Arescom 1000 out that you can configure yourself, I'll take anything right now, I just want to be able to host my own games/ftp and be able to VPN into my work so I can work from home also.

My ISP at home does not require me to reset the modem at all, I stay online and never have link problems.

The crappy ISP at work though does give problems (sometimes it suddenly stops all DNS packets), which is why we're going to boot it soon in favor of another one.

i've had to power cycle a couple times, but i did it along with the router and it might have been the router that was hiccuping. i've had DSL for around 2 years.

I've been using the same Alcatel modem for nearly 3 years with SBC/Pacific Bell. It's on all the time, but once in a while the connection drops and I have to turn it off and unplug it for a few minutes and restart it for it to sync again. This occurs maybe once or twice every few months, but this past week I've had to do it two times. It might be my router though. I've been using a Netgear one for the same amount of time.

I have done it but I can not guarantee that it actually did any good.
