In the 1.5 years I have had Verizon DSL, I have never had to power cycle the modem. The only reason the modem has been turned off was the one instance in which we lost power.

Every once in a while I have to do this. It's really annoying since my modem is downstairs.

Twice in the entire year I've had SBC, Once, it was move the modem from off of the top of the case, where it had worked before.

SWBell used to do that. Not Optimal Link (a local Houston company). SWBell is PPPOE, Oplink is ethernet, if that makes a difference.

i had dsl, now have roadrunner/cable;on occasion i have had to "recycle" the modem for both systems.

Not a lot,but once in a while.

me"my dsl stopped working"
tech"when did it stop working"
me"about of couple of hours ago"
tech"plz hold"
me during the 5 min hold time"wtf"
tech comes back"apparently we have been having a problem in your area"
me"oh, when did that start?"
tech"oh, about a couple of hours ago"
me"huh, when will it end?"
tech"im sorry, i dont have an eta on that, please call back in a little while."

then when im done, i turn of the modem, turn it back on, and magically i have internet access....stupid no good techs.

What the hell are you complaining about. You should at LEAST try the most simple and common causes for connection loses. Hell when my cable goes down, I restart my router, reboot the cable modem all before I waste my time sitting on hold to see if there is a problem in my area.

Does it excuse the idiot tech for giving misinformation? No but you should at least have the sense to do some basic tests before wasting your time and theirs.

Verizon DSL here. I haven't reset my modem since August of last year. No problems at all.

I got a Speedstream router and in the summer I end up restarting it every other day or so. Now as it gets warmer I find myself doing it every couple of weeks.. Probably bad ventilation.

That's standard operating procedure for SBC. I documented my problems with them here. That was finally resolved by myself, when I linked to this page about RFI. Fine, all was well for a day or so, then it crapped out at 5:15PM Thursday. DSL LED was solid, but no connection. Powered up, then down as per instructions, but still no go. Removed my router, installed Yahoo! setup and it still wouldn't connect. Called TS and spent 90 minutes making a mess of my configuration, but it still wouldn't connect. They said they'd call the next day (yesterday) to set up time to check the line. Connection magically started working sporadically via router at about 1:30PM Friday and was solid by 3:00PM. Never did get that phone call from them.

Funny thing happened at about 9:00PM. Two huge utility trucks came down the street with yellow lights flashing. They parked right in front of the pole that my phone connection uses. They sat for a while with lights flashing. I joked to my wife about them being there to work on my DSL. I called my son out from the bedroom, telling him the guys were here to fix it. I told him to look out the front window, which he did. His eyes were huge! :) I told him that I had demanded they get their butts out here and get me connected for the weekend damn it, and there they were :D

I really don't know who they were or what company they were from. There was a bucket/cherry picker on one of the trucks, but it was too dark to see the names on the side, or even the colors. Nobody ever did climb out of either one, and they drove off within 10 minutes.

Unless there is another problem I have not had to powercycle my DSL modem. I still am trying to figure out how to keep Win2000 from disconnecting me when I'm idle, but that's for a different thread.
