Do you ever get stuck on a problem you can't figure out and then post on a message board like this in hopes that someone has experienced the same problem and will help you out? Reason I'm asking is because I fix computers for a living. I asked on another forum for some help regarding a client's computer. They said since I fix computers for a living and I'm making money off of their advice that they will not help me any longer and that it is "uncool" to do this.

There's nothing wrong with that. No one knows everything. It's called being resourceful. Those guys are just being asshats.

I've done that before... no big deal. You have to learn somewhere. If a forum is the fastest route, so be it.

Typically, if you fix computers for a living you should be able to figure out the problem. But if not, a google search will usually answer the questions for you, that is probably why people get hostile. Instead of yelling "Google it B!tch", they just start being total d!cks about it. Just my 2 cents. I know I get annoyed at answering questions, so I refer people to google a lot, or do the search for them and send them the link and say "Follow this". I don't have enough time to provide phone support for non-technical friends.

Thanks guys, I was like WTF? I always try to help here as much as I can no matter who they're helping be it their family or a client. If I can help them solve a problem, then that's great.

There are some occasions in which a Google search doesn't turn up much that's relevant, or it turns up so much that you're having a hard time wading through all of the results.

Yes, that is why I said usually. I also said people will just be d!cks about it. If you say you are a n00b, people are more likely to help you honestly. If you tell them you fix computers for a living, they are like fvck this guy.

I'm very thankful that one of the largest computer related forums on the internet does not have this attitude and I'm very greatful to every single member here. They're all wonderful and are class acts to me.

Really? I've found the opposite to be true. I'm definitely more willing to help someone that knows what he's doing, and is able to help himself, over someone that hasn't got a clue.

but I mean, if it's something that I don't know and can't fix, it's gotta be a doozy of an issue 🙂

That's just a given. We all know that you're god's gift to tech support. 😛

j/k 😉

Meh...I have posted a couple times on problems. I usually end up solving them before anyone else helpful stumbles along, but sometimes it can be useful to post on forums. Sometimes you just run into those mind-bogglingly weird issues that someone else may have run into and fixed easily.

well, I work in a pretty specialized area 😉

if a server goes down, in 99.9% of cases, it's one of about ten things. if it's not one of those, then yeah, it's gotta be some crazy weird issue.

of course, generally speaking, my job doesn't provide a lot of time for troubleshooting. if we can't isolate the problem in a short period of time (15-20 minutes), we write it off and proceed with our disaster recovery options, if there are any.

in most cases, it's far faster to build a new box and restore it from tape backups rather than try to troubleshoot the issue for 2 hours.

Kindof annoyed me once when I got underbid on a contract and then the guy who underbid me on the qmail project kept sending questions to the qmail newsgroup asking them pretty much how to do the entire job. Of course, they just told him to RTFM.
