Yeah, all the time. Why spend 4 hours trying to figure something out when I can get a response from someone else who's had the same problem before in 20 minutes. Likewise, I try to help other people out when I can. We have a paid subscription to Experts Exchange here, it's saved us TONS of money.

Exactly. WTF. Who goes to a tech forum to tell people to figure it themselves. What is the point?

Google, and more often google groups answer most question I can't answer on my own. But There are tons of weird issues that come up that stump me, but 90% of the time google/groups solves them or pushes me in the right direction to solve them. Often times google groups will turn up some one asking about the exact same problem, only no one had an answer for them either. Its then that I have to try and figure what might be causing it and go from there. Sometimes there is no solution, sometimes its so mindnumbingly bizarre that I can't believe I stumbled upon it.

Fvck them. I help out other IT/consultant folk all the time. *I* get something out of the exchange too, otherwise I wouldn't be a part of the forum...

I say a good part of an IT job is being resourceful. If you don't know the answer, you have to know where to look for the answer.

One thing I wished more IT people do when fixing a problem and before declaring victory is figuring out WHY something broke and WHY this fix they are doing works.

Can we please all make a solemn pact to update our posts with whatever solution we find.

You always find forum posts with question, then a few suggestions... then the OP freaking dissapears and never updates with what solution.

It's just fvcking clutter at that point and should be deleted from the internet.

Heh, true. That's why I freaked and started savedeja.com when google bought dejanews and did nothing for a couple of weeks. It ended up working out anyway as google ended up doing a much better job than dejanews ever did archiving the newsgroups.

They're being dicks. The difference between an IT guy and joe blow, is if an IT guy doesn't have the answer, he knows how to get it. Joe blow doesn't.

I think it depends. When I ask for help, it's almost always very specific. If you're asking general questions like "How do I get my client's Internet back" then you deserved that response.

Do you ever get stuck on a problem you can't figure out and then post on a message board like this in hopes that someone has experienced the same problem and will help you out? Reason I'm asking is because I fix computers for a living. I asked on another forum for some help regarding a client's computer. They said since I fix computers for a living and I'm making money off of their advice that they will not help me any longer and that it is "uncool" to do this.

I don't get stumped too much anymore, and we have a large national team to bounce ideas off of, but every once in a while I reach out to forums.

IMHO, a lot of the guys on the highly tech. forums are MAKING money at it.

You may have ventured into a kiddie park.

I usually just ignore those kinds of questions. They clearly didn't put the time into their post to give me the information I need to help them, so why should I put in the time to help them? You gotta meet people halfway.

I have posted questions before, but I'm usually fairly specific and, just to show that I actually have looked into it and that I'm not just looking for a quick out, I give a description of all of the things I've tried.

I've also answered a few posted questions.

I don't see a problem with it....as long as you've done your homework before asking. 🙂

But if not, a google search will usually answer the questions for you, that is probably why people get hostile. Instead of yelling "Google it B!tch", they just start being total d!cks about it. Just my 2 cents. I know I get annoyed at answering questions, so I refer people to google a lot, or do the search for them and send them the link and say "Follow this". I don't have enough time to provide phone support for non-technical friends.

There are some occasions in which a Google search doesn't turn up much that's relevant, or it turns up so much that you're having a hard time wading through all of the results.

Yeah, like why Arcserve CASUniversalAgent will not install.
