PS3 System Software Update v3.50 Available Soon
Posted by Eric Lempel // VP, Network Operations Americas

Hi everyone, as we announced previously, the PS3 system software update (v3.50) is adding support for Blu-ray 3D Disc Playback, and it will be released shortly.
Additional new features in the 3.50 update include:

Facebook Integration: Developers will be able to create PS3 games that have more interaction with Facebook. Once compatible PS3 titles are available, PS3 users can choose to access public information on Facebook – including user name, profile, uploaded photos and friends list – to enhance their gameplay experience.

Grief Reporting Function: Users can send claim reports directly from the XMB for any inappropriate messages they receive from other PlayStation Network users. This feature is accessible from the option menu of the messages list in the FRIENDS category.

For more details and instructions on how to update the system software for the PS3 system, please visit http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Features/SystemUpdate.
As always, we look forward to your feedback.

great..yeah after a week i turnd back on my ps3 for some demons souls action and was greeted by this nonsense.
op u may not think its a big deal..but i find it annoying as hell and i aint alone
every single damn time i turn this stupid console on it has to update

and i have to ask..an email alter? so i can opt in to get spammed bout updates i do not care about?
yeah thatll make things better
why doesnt sony just..uhm..i dunno..fix the damn update system

Well, at least 3.5 is worth it if you play blu-rays or use 3d features. Otherwise, just turn it on, let it update, go take a crap, eat some popcorn, drink a beer, have sex and come back and play whatever game pleases you. 😉

How about Sony just gives us automatic updates without having to pay for PSN Plus subscriptions? They have the technology, they just don't want to give it away.

i dont own a 360
i dont have psn+
i wanted a console
not an update carousel of frustration.
i thought after last weeks nonsense id be good to go..i didnt play demons souls last week bc i didnt turn my console on since jun 25th and so i had to update and up[date some more
its almost sadistic at this point..i couldnt believe it!!

maybe the stars will align and at SOME point i can get back to playing at my convenience not sonys

...Doing something else for 20 minutes of your life while the PS3 updates really has you that badly traumatized?

The update took ~15 minutes, which is the longest it's ever taken for me. I was also downloading/uploading three torrents that I was too stubborn to turn off, so it could have taken <5 minutes.

Yes... Especially when the competing console doesn't have such problems. It's a cut throat industry and Sony needs to get their shit together if they don't want to drive people away.

Not sure if normal people factor 20 minutes a month into their decision to buy a console.

You've seen how many people are complaining about it here haven't you? People that know about the alternatives will make choices based on that during the next generation. I know that I won't be looking to Sony for my next console now that I have both and know what to expect from each side. Just because YOU don't think it's important doesn't mean nobody does. Hardcore gamers care about the little things.

I personally hate the constant updates of the PS3, but I think that's because it's in direct comparison with how it's handled on the 360. If the 360 was as slow (in terms of download speed) and constant with updates like the PS3 is, then I probably wouldn't even think about complaining.

As a hardcore gamer I just care about the games. The dashboard, etc. mean nothing. I want good, fun games. Also, as a hardcore gamer, twenty minutes means nothing to me.

Well, if your plan was to play for 20 minutes then yeah I can see how that would suck.

I've finally gotten to the point where I make sure to turn on my PS3 and check for updates at least once per month in order to avoid this problem.

Right. If it was limit on both consoles then nobody would consider it an issue. Since many of us know how well it CAN work, it's bothersome to see it work poorly.

Yes, because it's ridiculous. Technology should work the way you want it to, not literally get in your way of using that tech.

Imagine if your car didn't work one morning for 15 mins while it downloaded a software update, yet everyone else's updated in seconds? Or if your toaster would toast bread for 15 min, or your toilet wouldn't flush, or your phone wouldn't make calls.

It's positively ridiculous and completely indefensible. Anyone who has a superior attitude about it like the 20 mins don't matter crowd is just being a douchebag. The purpose of a ps3 is primarily to play games, not update itself.

M$ doesn't make me update every time i want to play a freaking game. Sony and the PS3 suck balls.

Disclaimer - I have both consoles.

Every time? Turn your system on more than once every two months then. My 360 had to update four different things when I started to use it again (couple of weeks before Reach). And then, to make sure I get halfway decent loading times, I have to install every game to my 360, which takes longer than ANY PS3 update has ever taken for me.

Poor comparison. Everyone's PS3 updates slower than the 360. Your comparison should be something like "all Hondas take 20 minutes to update, but VW's only take 3 seconds."

Good god the whining against the PS3's updates is just sad.
