For those who hate rap, hate it all you want... but it is "music"

Rap is nothing more then poetry timed to a beat. Peotry in metered steps has always been considered music. Here, go watch the movie Sparticus. At one point, the gay white guy with the curly black hair (I forgot his name I just remember him looking gay) sings to the slaves refugee camp. At first you think he's reciting poetry until Sparticus tells him that is the most beautiful song he has ever heard and that his singing is the real talent in the world where his is not. Or at least I think I remember the dialog going along those lines like that.

Anyhow, in the past, not everyone could "sing" well nor have instruments. So poetry was a form of singing for those without the greatest voices as long as the poetry was considered metered.

What I think is frikking funny is when black friends (I'm just saying because only black people tell me this) that it's part of their heritage, their culture, and that it's something they brought to white folk. Uhhh.... no. Rap, as I said is metered poetry and has been around in Europe for a LONG time. It was also called monophonic music back then.

Just a little history lesson. Still, I like some rap, and dislike other rap. I tend to dislike more modern produced rap songs then I dislike say rock songs but there is plenty of music from all categories I like and dislike.

Until you guys know the history of music a bit better, this goes for the OP too, stop with the diarrhea of the mouth please.

Doboji is right ... people are ignorant to say that rap is not music simply because they dislike it. And on these boards it seems that if you hate rap, you have to come into any thread that deals with rap, even though you hate it, and let everyone know that you hate rap and how much it sucks. that doesn't happen when you see threads about alternative, rock, or pretty much any other type of music.

Well... people may not pop in to say other music genres suck, but people do almost always come in and say Band X sucks hard, Band Y is way better.

which has absolutely nothing to do with what I was talking about ...

but that does show that the other genres always have to trash stuff they personally do not like, thanks for making that point 😛

I don't really know if quoting a scene from Spartacus makes you an expert on this topic, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt.

My initial point was that rap enthusiasts seem to be more defensive when it comes music. From what I've seen, if a person says "I hate rock/country/jazz/etc." the one who DOES like those will reply similar to "well, you're missing out." Same scenario but with rap, response becomes "man, why are you so closed minded" or "(insert non-descript insult towards other party's music preferrence)". If I don't like something (which I don't like some rap), then let it go .... it's ok ... no one is going to think less of you for not "representin".

In the OP you call out rock and country. Two types that have very large fan bases. You first point out how those two suck and why we should embrace rap. Classic persuasion tactics, but I can make my own decisions so, go for it maybe you can pull a few strays into the flock.

No you misunderstand me... I dislike country, but I acknowledge that it's most certainly music, and in many cases very good music. I'm comparing my feeling about country, to many people's feelings about rap. Pointing out the difference that while I acknowledge the music that I dislike as music, and often good music, those who hate rap dismiss it as non-music. And thats just stupid.

Anything can be construed as music. But with rap, when you take the actual music away, all you've got left is some guy talking.

Ok, let's apply that logic to all music with lyrics. Take out the music in country music and it'll just be someone talking. Take out the music in rock and you have someone just yelling. So why is rap any different according to your logic?

You were all good til you did your little edit there... I don't need to know every single aspect of the entire history of music in order to comment on whether rap is music or not.

I promise you sparticus era metered poetry != 666 Mafia

I actually like a good deal of rap music. What I *don't* like are rap albums about pimping hos, getting bling-bling, popping caps in yo ass, etc. I have a feeling that these types of recordings give the entire genre a bad name - just as Ozzy biting the head off a bat, etc. gives all of heavy metal a bad name.

There is a lot of alternative hip-hop out there with more interesting styles and messages. Someone mentioned the Roots, which is a good starting point. Also MF Doom, anything produced by Dan the Automator (including Gorillaz), and the New York underground scene (Aesop Rock, El-P, Cannibal Ox). Once I found these artists it really opened my mind to the fact that rap can be a lot more than just chattering poetry over a beat.

Well, Toys in the Attic-era Aerosmith != Muddy Waters blues music but to say they are not related is just plain ignorant. Same goes with Humble Pie's arguement. You appear to have missed his point.

A huge number of people are deeply in credit card debt, that doesn't mean credit card debt is good.

I like a some rap, but the "its popular so it must be good" point doesn't really hold water. Britney Spears albums are pretty popular.
you really are a smart guy. 🙂

Yeah but the other stuff without the music will still be someone singing with a melody. That is not talking. Rap is basically some guy running his mouth with or without the music being on. You suck at nitpicking.

Sure, it requires some talent to rap.

Do you know what rap (this new age ghetto-fabulous lifestyle overtone) is? It is a by-product which stemmed from the white man oppressing the black man man years ago. Because of this, the black man hates everything about the white man and his culture, thus he invents this new intrepid "music" in defiance, in protest so that "his people" would be different and separate.

Fast-forward to 2005. Now you see everyone listening to this stuff, especially white people. Do you people even realize what happened? The white man drove the black man to invent this music/lifestyle then realizes it's spreading like a wildfire then, being the great business man that he is, commodifies it, then sells it back to the black man and his people at an inflated premium. Profit!

Have you started to notice white people (celebrities, talkshow hosts, even news anchors) using certain phrases? This did not happen by accident!

And no I am not racist--I have friends from all cultures and ethnicities. I am just amazed that everyone is buying into this bs without realizing what it really is.

Naw, I was using the sparticus movie as a reference to show something where at least people can see what I'm talking about being represented. The guy "singing" isn't even rhyming.

As for taking the music from the instruments out of other genre forms, yes you get left with the vocals only but the difference can be shown on an osciloscope. Singing in it's "purest form" conforms the vocal cords to produce a perfect sign wave oscilation. Just saying words does not. Anyone can say words. Yes, it takes a bit of practice and I guess talent to say words "fast" enough and good enough memorization skills if you manage to go a whole song without using 2 or 3 lines as a chorus and nothing else only. This is one of the reasons people don't consider rap music. It still is, it just doesn't take as much talent. What people mean when they say rap isn't music is that it's not TALENTED music. This is the case many times although not all the time which is why there are rap songs that many people will like. Also, because anyone can do it, you tend to have more people doing rap music then any other form of music. Seriously, there are more rap "artists" out there then say country, or rock, or whatever. This is despite there being a bigger consumer base for rock and country music then rap. No disprespect it's just the way it is. Holding a high C above C for a minute with your voice alone is MUCH harder to do and takes more talent then saying, "I shot a cop and b~tchslapped my hoe, I come from the ghetto and can touch my toes." Which is another thing, many people can't even relate to rap music and many rap artists just pull incongruent words out of their a$$ that make no sense to the rest of the song but use the words just because it rhymes with what was said at the end of the last meter.

So doob, don't compare rap with the "instrument music taken away" to another genre with that taken away. They don't take the same talent to achieve. Put it this way. Any country or rock, or hell opera singer can do rap. I mean all 100% of those artists from another genre can do rap. Now, do you think even 1% of rap artists can sing an opera like Cry of the Valkeries? I don't think so.

No, that is definitely not true right there. that is a pretty stupid and ignorant statment. the ignorance in this thread just amazes me ...

As a professional session musician making $100 an hour playing guitar solos for various artists, I feel I have a say in this matter.

Rap isn't music in the truest sense in that it doesn't consist of harmonious melodies, but often enough when parts of the recording is borrowed from music (ie: Sting etc.), it becomes partially musical. It is a lifestyle outcry definitive of the poor and uneducated. It is essentially the blues taken to an almost angry level in a modern society.

Today, the definition of music has now evolved to allow the entry of rap into the mainstream after Blondie's popular 80's hit "Rapture." This makes Blondie, Deborah Harry, truly the first mainstream rapper and is largely responsible for allowing and paving the way for non-blacks to rap and allowing the big market sales of rap as music. Unfortunately this still doesn't make it music in the traditional sense and is a major pet peeve in the industry despite it's high sales figures.

In my opinion, it has it's place...in the garbage.

Uhhh... no. Rap was not invented or brought about by black people being oppressed by white people. Not at all. It's an old, old, old, OLD form of music that goes back so far cavemen probably were "rapping." I said it before and I'll say it again, rap is nothing more then metered poetry. Period. It's been around for ages if not all of human existance. Now the lyrics used in modern "rap" have not been around for ages. Then again I could be wrong. Perhaps cavemen were rapping back then about "clubbing my hoe over the head, just to drag her inside my bed" or whatever they used for language back then. Now if you want to say modern black "rap" then yes, you are correct. It's form of lyrics came from white opression.

Until you guys know the history of music a bit better, this goes for the OP too, stop with the diarrhea of the mouth please.

rap and metered poetry have thier roots in africa. and its the blacks that popularized and reinvented rap, so its technically their music.

tell me this ... if rap is all coming from blacks oppression from whites, then why the hell are their asian rappers and hispanic rappers overseas in their homelands?

youre trying to tell a bunch of computer nerds that rap is real music. Just stop, The majority of the people here think its cool to be anti-pop culture, and I doubt most have a life outside their computers, especially one where they are exposed to anything that would be considered normal. Im sure most of the people on here were in the nerd club and so what, let them like what they like. I'll be out listening to rap, country, pop......whatever the flunk I think I like.

You cant convince stereotypists, they carve their opinions in stone.

and yes....I am a computer nerd too.....but thats just one of the hats i wear and im willing to be I have more hats then you.

Incorrect. Metered poetry has been around since man has been around. Unless you want to prove that man came from Africa. Which is just a scientific theory as there is no definate proof because one theory still holds Africa, one is Asia, one is Europe, and one is just the Garden of Eden whereever the hell that was, but no one knows for sure.

Look, no one ethnic group can claim to own or "invent" rap. That's ridiculous. That's like someone claiming their lineage invented how to wipe your own a$$ after taking a sh~t.

As for my claim about ANYONE being able to do rap. Yes. ANYONE CAN. It's the oldest form of music known to man and was invented because ANYONE can do it. It's simple. If I just say, "Roses are red, violets are blue, Flowers are sweet because I love you" I just RAPPED. That's all it takes. Speaking metered poetry IS ALL RAP IS. It may not be "good" rap, but that doesn't change what it is. Period. Anyone and I mean anyone with a voice and a laguange can rap. I've seen people from the Ronald McDonald's House rap. It's not an ignorant claim, but it is a fact. But as I said before, the evolution of music goes beyond monophonic sounds and expressions. Not everyone can sing opera, play a guitar, or beat a drum. That takes talent and practice. Hence why I said not every rap artist you see selling a CD could do anything beyond rapping. I'm sure a few can, I'm not making a blanket statement in that regard. Perhaps 1 or 2 rap artists could sing Cry of Valkeries if they worked at it but you know what? That still leaves the vast majority out there that can't do anything but make up lyrics and speak them in meter.

Rap music will always be around because it is the simplest and most basic form of music there is. It doesn't belong to any one ethnic group or some stupid crap like that.
