For those who are exempt salary based employees

I just started a salary based job and since i'm exempt, I don't get paid any overtime no matter how many hours I work over 40/week. I don't mind staying an 1-3 hours/week overtime but I don't understand how some people can justify working over 45-50 hours when they're not even compensated for the overtime? Once the clock hits 5pm, I lose all motivation to do any work whether I still have a lot to do or not... But requiring to stay and finish your work without getting paid OT makes it even worse.

So how does someone justify working overtime hours for a company and not get paid for it?

If I'm behind schedule at noon I'll start creatively cutting corners until I'm on schedule again.

If their salary makes up for the fact that they don't get extra overtime pay, or assumes that X amount of extra time is going to happen, seems OK to me.

TMK, getting paid for 40 hours per week regardless of how many hours over you work is standard in today's salaried jobs.

Its a matter of how much you value your job and how much you want to advance in the company. It would help if you told us your position and type of job, but the general rule of thumb is if you put in the extra work to stand out and succeed, it puts you on the right track to advance.

If you have no motivation after 5pm, maybe you're in the wrong job or you're just lazy.

They don't pay me enough to work non paid overtime. I might stick around for 1 or 2 extra hour to get work done a few times a week, but I definitely not working 50 hours every week and coming in on Saturday.

Heh I imagine most people don't find getting fired as a worthwhile trade off.

Granted when I don't feel like working anymore, I don't. They can get rid of me, I can find another job. But I'm relatively young. Some of the near 50 year old women who have been there a while don't have it so easy. They make a lot, but work upwards of 60 hours a week for 3 months of the year. Then more hours at other points in the year. Boss has them by the balls. What is their alternative to not working overtime with no compensation?

You accept it.

I was exempt all of my working life. Probably averaged three dollars an hour. :(

I have turned down a few of those jobs, mid-management positions with the worst of all worlds, IMO. They did not offer enough for what I knew was going to be a lock on all my creative time.

Are any of those ever salary?

I think to do that stuff for no OT you have to be an extreme ass kisser, yes man, and fool. Good work stands on it's own, staying late if you're not producing anything just makes you look like a fool.

sometimes you can also get Comp Time for those extra hours if there a tone of overtime.

How do you think our productivity numbers keep going up in the US? People are working more hours for the same money. I heard the average man now works 50 hours a week in the US. Every person has to decide whether the hours expected of them are worth the salary paid. And no, it's not easy to quit a job especially as one's responsibilties grow over time.

Unless there is something that is literally on fire or has a big time impact on business im out the door @ 5:00. The times I leave at 1-2 to take thecat to the vet etc balance it out

I get paid salary w/o OT, and I occasionally work OT. Then again, I'm ok with it because I get paid pretty well.

An unfortunate effect of globalization.

Wonder what folks will do. I don't doubt that 50 hours a week are becoming more common. It'll be interesting in say the next 10 years to see where things stand. If a 50 hour work week is standard, and for the same, or less pay than what is current.

There is the gap with baby boomers retiring, but I'm not convinced that they will be.

I see people working longer hours, for more years, with no increase in compensation. And nothing they can really do about it. I think some folks are going to get it with a lower quality of life than what they are expecting/accustomed to.

Sometimes there are other benefits, such as not having somebody scrutinize your time card, and being able to cut out early on a nice day with no penalty.

I put in 50+ hours a week on salary. But I also get a year-end bonus that makes up for it. Basically, keep working until the job is done. That's what you're getting paid for.

QFT. My bonus more than makes up for what I'm "missing" w/ OT.
