130 Computer City has been there for about 3 years now, I think. It's a little quieter than 298 at certain times, but if you are looking for some hardware in particular, there are actually more shops there.....some of the bigger names like ANA, Videocom, AIS computer city are there....it's a tad more organised than 298. Sometimes you can find some REALLY interesting stuff there.

There's more crap at 298 than anything else....130 seems to be a little more upmarket....I was suprised to find some AMD Athlon and Duron ONLY shops on the 2nd floor....I thought that was interesting.

Andy, damnit, you know my identity, i hate you 😉 What you said sounds very interesting too. It'd be very interesting to see actually how far the 3D world has gone through so far, all the way back to the father of 3D. see if anand will hear us whining here 🙂

hmmm, i guess i am too outdated, i have never been to the 130 but from what you said it seems to be a very interesting place, espeically those AMD solo shops. i have also noticed a trend about 298 (ok, it might be old news) is that it has become more of a pirated cd center than a computer center. go to the thrid floor, it's full of cd shops and i really feel bad those those remaining hardware shop. most of the more "meaningful" hardware shop you find them on the first floor, and yes, P@radise is there.

Man I miss HK...

130 computer centre?
Is that the Wan Chai computer centre? (Wan jai deen lo jong sum?)
It's easy to get to 'cos my mate lives in the MTR flats adjacent to the McDonalds and as we always kid him - the methadone clinic also 😉

rominl: I've always known....but if you don't want it known it's your right.

For the week before Chinese New Year this year they were doing the super special at 298....HK$100 for 22 pirated CDs....you should have seen the crowds!!

The third floor of 298 has only 4 or 5 hardware shops, a shop dedicated to hedgehogs, orbs and coollers, and the rest are all category III VCDs....although I did hear one idiot say his shop was selling category IV...

Gavin: yup......Wanchai Computer Centre/Deen Lo Chung Sum is too long....so I just call it 130, and the other one 298. Easy to remember.

Andy: nah, that's cool. if you think about it you would have guessed my intention of having this account. just keep it between us 😉

WTH? $100 for 22 pirated CD? Holy.... damnit..... i should've gone back for the new yr... It must be good. hehe, so you were one of those people in the "crowd"?

yeah, i didn't know that 3rd floor is so swamped with category III vcd, and last time i went back to HK i went there.... with my GF. Great. There's only one shop selling category IV? I thought there were more. I don't know, never went in any of them 🙂

BTW, Andy, you are really update on HK computer stuff, even though you spend quite some time in australia. something i want to know about in HK, i will definitely come to you 🙂

Is 298 selling lots of pirate cds now? I remember in the old days they used to be all over the place, but the last few times I went there there wasn't much going - although its been a while since I last went there 😉 I seem to remember there being loads of porn vcd shops on the top floor, wah so dirty! Whats supposed to be the difference between category III and IV?

WCC seems to be the priciest out of the 4 major computer centres in Hong Kong (298, GC, MK, WCC) but it's usually a bit cleaner and less crowded - and it's nearer the MTR (and gavin's m8's flat!)
188 (behind 298) has got a few computer shops, although it's mainly game console, and clothing shops now?! Anyone notice the top floor always have a really strong cuttlefish smell - wah ho chow!

Talking about categories for censorship!!!

Here in HK they must be bloody mad - you can show some poor guy/girl with their head splatted on the pavement in full colour in the Chinese newspapers - but you cannot show a very nicely formed pair of breasts!

I mean really - what is going to mess up a young mind more?

Ok - I'm off the soapbox 🙂

That's true, 298 has more porno stuff than the pirated cds we want. don't go to the top floor, they don't have nothing except porno. if you want pirated cds you gotta go to the second floor, they are all there (if any).

for category III and IV, the difference is that III is only two points, but IV is three points. there is actually category V if you care, and that's between human and animal. ok, nuff said...

btw, is buying pirated cd illegal is hk now? it wasn't, but there was this argue on the issue, and i didn't know what happen after that.

yeh i knew they were censorship categories 😉 - just the difference between III and IV, softcore and hardcore probably?

It's now illegal if you're caught in possesion of pirated material within your business, as for someone being found with a pirate copy of Quake3 in their bag, then they can't be done. Although I think that may come in the near future :Q

yup, softcore and hardcore, i like that 🙂

yeah, i know about the possesion of pirated cd in business, that's why a lot of business are now in crazy trying to get a copy of some old software (a legal copy of win95 for their super old machine).

They were selling original Windows 95 CD's in the Golden Centre (downstairs) for HK$20 each - however - no license came with them 🙂

Original disk means nothing....

OK let me talk about censorship too. 😉

Some of my colleagues are the government inspectors and officers who controlls the porno stuff in form of video, magazine and even internet. They told me a lot on what'd cross the line and what'd not. My impression is, when dealing with anything about sex, Hong Kong is the most conservated area among the global Chinese societies, including mainland China. Talking about moral, sex is on top of everything. In Hong Kong we can watch TV and film which showing how someone got murder, chopped into pieces, cooked and ready for eating. But the real scene how love is properly made will never never shown in any legal form of articles, including the sex education materials for youngsters.

Enough of off topic and poundering on my own people. And If you don't wanna eat the grids, PM me, I can ask my colleagues where to buy the hardcore cat4 VCD 😉

hehe, don't PM, just say it here. There will be less than 10 people really understand what we are talking about here 😉

Hee.. 😉

I'd ask them today. As for the time being, they just lent me a few dozen (wrapped inside a big "On Her Majestic Service" government envelope, LMAO!!!) last week, some are DVD. 😀

OK, now my question is, is it worthy to buy a DVD ROM now and which one to get? I want one which is good at reading bad disc, all code and preferably cheap enough.

haha, good, watch and tell us what happen 🙂

well, i think if you watch DVD on computers, it's a good buy. speed of 12x and higher are not that rare, and i think price is reasonable. i have a panasonic, don't ask me why, i just have it. i cracked it with a new firmware and now it's region free. there are some sites out there where you can find firmware to crack the region. i can't post them here coz' they are warez, but definitely check before buying any dvdrom. i know some dvdrom there are no cracks

ahfung: get the ASUS 12x...has a jumper on the back to enable all regions. Typical ASUS good quality....reads everything.

ASUS are also announcing the 16x as part of CeBit....ask around and see if anyone can get it in for you.
