What's currently the best RAM to get there? I'm currently leaning towards the 256MB PC150 Kingmax tinyBGA stick as I've read from reviews that it can do 2-2-2@150Mhz. I have a friend who's there right now and he wrote this,

"1)HY-1 (they can't translate whose the manufacturer) but according to them its described as HY 7J (maybe Hyundai I dunno) most of these sticks are pooly made and mostly manufactured in China and probably the lowest quality of RAM around. The author bought a PC100 stick but couldn't run in 100FSB on 66, just to summarize don't buy this stick.

2)LGS - Almost the same as HY 7J, their PC100 can run on LC2 on 112MHz sticks a better a yr before but gradually the quality is going down.

3) Kingmax - the first batch of PC133 were originally PC100 (maybe they found out that these baby can further) so they upgraded them. As for the PC133 the same thing happed got better on CL2, they suggest to use Hwinfo and SANDRA200 to verify the chips correct ID.

4) and 5) GEIL and GL2000 - these sticks are made in china quality are better than HY 7J (i've seen these RAMS in China only with nice packaging)

6)They suggest to get rams coming from NEC, Samsung or Winbond these are top quality PC133. (On other mags I've read here better get the ones that are made in Korea, JApan or USA .)

7) Some other good quality of PC133 rams are as follows:

Hitachi - HM 52 xx xx 5 x xTT - 75
Siemens - HYB39S xx xx0 x T x -7.5 (133MHZ)
- HYB39S xx xx0 x T x -5 (143MHz)
- HYB39S xx xx0 x T x -6 (166MHz)
Micron - MT48 xx xx M xx Ax - 7.5 (133MHz)
- MT48 xx xx M xx Ax - 7 (143MHz)"

I need your comments please. Thank you.

HY is RAM manufactured by Hyundai. It's OK...all CAS3, and most of my RAM is Hyundai. I haven't had any problems with them. It's one of the most commonly available brands of RAM, and probably better than some of the others. I can run some of my Hyundai PC100 SDRAM at 133.

A stick of 128MB PC133 Hyundai is this week going for HK$280.

LGS do not manufacture RAM anymore. If the stick of RAM is LGS, it's old stock.

RAM manufactured by Hitachi is also quite common, although normally you would need to ask for it. Hitachi PC133 128MB is going for HK$310 this week.

The KingMax PC150 uBGA stuff is available at ShumShuiPo and MongKok on the Kowloon side, and much harder to get at Wanchai on the island side. Either way, you have to look around as very few shops carry it. A bit pricy, this week KingMax PC150 128MB is going for HK$565.

Never heard of or seen GEIL/GL2000 RAM.

NEC SDRAM is what they will usually give you if you ask for 256MB DIMMs. NEC PC133 128MB is going for HK$290.

PQI is the most common low quality RAM....it is also the cheapest, going for HK$260 for 128MB of PC133.

You will see Winbond, Samsumg, Siemens/Infineon around, but you have to be on the lookout for it. Again, these brands go for a little over HK$300 for a stick of 128MB PC133.

I think if you want CAS2 capable RAM, either go for the KingMax PC150, or look around very hard for the stuff from Infineon.

For those in HK or not in HK,
go to hkgolden.com for Golden lowest price list.
although the web site is in chinese, the price list has english version.

If you want Crucial, just need to pay additional us$25 to ship to HK.

Don't you think US$25 is a little bit much to pay for shipping, even if it is Crucial? The percentage of the overall cost of shipping is so big is that you might as well buy another 64MB locally.

I went to Golden COmputer Centre when I went to HK! My Uncle got me loads of gear from there! Asus 8X DVD-Rom (Chipped), Asus 8X4X32 CD-Writer, 384MB Ram Mugen Module, Webcam, 30.7GB IBM 75GXP HHD and an Internal Zip 250. If I bought exactly the same gear here in the U.K I would have to pay about HKD$800-900 extra, which is about £70-80 or so pounds! Big saving! If I bought alot mroe I could have made such a saving the air fare would be payed back!

Ram I chose Mugen Module cause they are, IMHO, the Asia equivelent to Crutial or a good company like that...

Albert.

Mugen? Goes for $310 for PC133 128MB. That's not really top line stuff IMHO.

Guys, thanks for the replies. Here's my friend's reply,

"I also tried to inquire about the best OCable RAM, they were very helpfull in showing me an a 256MB stick Infineon p/n HYB39S12800CT-75 work week 104 (the stick is still connected to an Abit K7TA board) the guy there said he could bring it up to 162MHZ at CAS2 !!!!!. We went to the shop were he bought the RAM problem is the damn thing is sold out only 128M left but I still insisted to get one for me and if possible test it if it can go up 150 on CAS2 I'll get one, he will inform me by this week about it, the RAM costs 750.464 HKD."

750.464, WHOA! Tell me if he is being ripped-off? Anyway, is there any truth to this? An Infineon 7.5nS(i.e. 3-3-3@133Mhz can do up to 2-2-2@162Mhz? Is he being led on to this BS?

"Kingmax 256 1,311.97 HKD, I don't understand this RAM prices they fluctuate to much 3 weeks ago they were around 1,289.12 HKD".

True or false?

Crucial $25 shipped to HK is per order, very reasonable, if you're buying more than 1,
after shipping that's even cheaper than buying generic Micron in HK.

Those prices are a little out. 256MB of KingMax uBGA PC150 goes for HK$1160 or so. I think you are being completely ripped off with the Infineon stuff though. Even a 256MB DIMM should cost $620 at the most....maybe you are being charged extra for the testing?

Where is your friend trying to buy from? Can you get the name of which shop and which computer mall he is going to?

About the Infineon "rip-off", I seriously had my doubts there. C'mon 7.5ns to go as high as 162Mhz 2-2-2!? Well, some people... 😉

You would be surprised at how some of the Infineon stuff performs. Those specs given do sound a bit doubtful though. Emphasis on CAS Latency performance is quite low here in HK, I have noticed, and unless you are very good friends with the sellers, they won't test for you.

there are so many black stores in HK.... i wouldn't really trust what those shop says unless i read it myself somewhere else

A word of warning about Micron PC133 RAM obtainable in HK!
I was having major problems to run my Duron 700/Abit KT7A with the 133FSB.....
I removed one stick and it runs at 133FSB no problem now.
The offending stick was sourced in the Mongkok computer centre.

Have a few things to say about the stick which I have removed - also Micron PC133 Micron -75ns RAM the PCB has "videocom" on it also!
chips are mainly labelled:

0045 4-2
MT 48LC8M8A2
TG -75 C

but they are not all the same - the other stick (which is running at 133FSB as we type) they are all the same but have 0036 instead of 0045 and are 2-2 instead of 4-2.

the RAM chips (on the removed stick) vary and are as follows:

3 sets of chips perhaps 4, sticker covering 1 - labelled
0045 4-2
MT 48LC8M8A2
TG -75 C

4 sets of chips - labelled
0045 3-2
MT 48LC8M8A2
TG -75 C

8 sets of chips (on the rear) - labelled
0036 2-2
MT 48LC8M8A2
TG -75 C

If you are buying Micron RAM make sure you get a stick with all the chips being the same!!!
The weird thing is both sticks of RAM will run at 143Mhz with the Host CLK + PCI CLK setting using Turbo and CAS 2 settings 🙁

don't even think about testing the RAM before you buy. they won't do it for you.
btw, yes, there are quite a lot of black stores in HK selling remarked, returned, or tested-low quality parts.

if you wanna go to a reputable store, check out "Centralfield" which is in the Golden Computer Center.

and the prices of parts fluctuate daily, just like seafood 🙂

Centralfield is certainly one of the larger and more reputable stores...they are fairly good.

ANA Computers and Videocom are always engaged in a price war, but I think ANA is more reliable.

Personally, I buy from a group called P@radise Computers at Wanchai 298....Chris Wong, Kelvin and Canny are great people...can't go wrong buying from them.

Infineon rulez!!! I have 3 Infineon. 2 are 256 1 is 128. All of them run at over 155MHz reliably. They have no problem running that fast even with CL2! Its biggest merit is very afford. Only about HK$590 for a 256MB.

I just don't like Kingmax. Firstly the PC133 I bought last year totally sucked. It won't go over 126MHz and it indirectly toasted a 550E. And now the PC150 I heard it is of good quality, but bloody expensive as well. We are talking about HK$500 for 256MB nowaday, but that PC150 Kingmax 128MB would cost more than other brands 256MB.

PQI was a big surprised back very early last year. From 150MHz upwards it's still going, only to be limited by my 550E which aren't stable at over 860MHz.

Hyundai really sucks. It won't run a little over 150MHz on my BX mobo. At 133-222 it just won't boot. Miron is doing a little better. It did boot at 133-222 but that all, won't make it to windows splash screen.

By the way, I found any brand(excluding the first Kingmax) of PC133 memory could run at 150MHz. Heck, even my Century PC100 64MB with high quality Hitachi modules could do that. I think compatiblity with mobo is the first thing to research on if you want push the memory to extreme.

Nowaday most memory are generally quite good in quality. I heard that a brand is going to release PC166 version soon. 😀

About the shops in Golden Mall, I mostly only buy from Videocom. Everyone say the sales persons are too cool and not helpful, but this really suits my style of shopping. I have my idea and don't want get interrupted. Plus this shop has very reliable RMA policy. If its within 7 days and the hardware really doesn't working (they have a dedicated RMA testing department, quite rarely in Golden Mall), you'll get a completely new one in no time. Not to mention Videocom is often the cheapest place you can buy hardware 😀

I'm sure most of the shops are fine as long as you know what you are after - it's the assistants that tell u crap that winds me up 🙁

My mate wanted a K6-2 400 CPU for his old system to upgrade - the guy in the shop (in Tuen Mun) said better to buy "boxed" because often the "tray" version will not run at that speed maybe only at 300-350Mhz and the boxed version is much better for playing games with...lol. We smiled and left the shop 🙂

Or when I was buying (1998 - Golden Centre) a C300A and new motherboard I asked one of the 2theMax dealers if they had 'boards that would allow overclocking like the Abit BH6. The learned assistant assured me that I could run a C300A at 350 to 400Mhz easily on a 2theMax board just by setting the multiplyer and using 100FSB...his friends had already done this...450Mhz with 100FSB was impossible though..hmm... I smiled and said oh OK thanks 🙂

I think either your friend exaggerated the Infineon too much or the quality varies.

For all my 3 Infineon, they could boot at 150-222, but would crash quickly in windows. They dont' mind CAS 2 @ over 150MHz but I can't force them @ RAS 2 even at 150MHz CL3. Weird?

Btw, the 2 256MB Infineon doesn't have SPD onboard, quite weird too IMO.

I always like buying in Mong Kok Computer Center. It is slightly more expensive than SSP Golden but only HK$10-20 more. Just one thing, dont 'FVUKin' buy from this shop called WinFrame.

Yes Videocom is very competitive and in the Mongkok PC centre it is a fairly impersonal, "say what u want - pay the money - leave the shop" kind of affair.
The Videocom shop downstairs at Sham Shui Po was much more friendly..well the girl was amused at my "gweilo cantonese" perhaps and of course my natural charm and good looks...lol.. 🙂

Very good prices too for certain items - but as you can see from my earlier post the RAM was not quite 1st grade PC133 🙁

No problem though, my GF's cousin needs to buy some RAM for a 100FSB computer - so guess where it will be going 🙂

I did save HK$100 on the cheapest price that same week though! I'll be back there to pick up another stick possibly...but checking the RAM chips first this time 😉

Most computer sales in HK dont really know what they are doing most of the time, they dont know that much about computer. Thatz why sometimes I rather 'buy n leave' style.
