For people who haven't seen a visual comparison between LCD and OLED

Honestly, I didn't like the screen on my Incredible when I compared it side-by-side to my Droid.

Let's see that shot in an environment in which more people use their phones...like say in your car on a sunny day, or outside while walking.

But I guess you will get the full benefit while using the phone at the theater lol.

Same here, the Droid has a wonderful screen. Though after about three weeks of use with my Incredible, I'm pretty much used to it.

Droid is gone come Thursday.

Heh I did the opposite. Hit the 30 day mark and took the Incredible back. :)

But yeah, good luck using any of these in the sun... with sunglasses on. :(

Yeah, I'm not sure a washed out photo shown on my LCD monitor is a great comparison to show the difference between OLED and LCD.

Besides, by all accounts I've seen, the screen on the EVO is outstanding.

OLED is a lot like plasma displays. Everytime someone wants to show me why plasma is great the turn off all the lights and throw in The Dark Knight night scenes.

I think OLED looks fantastic in controlled lighting. My N1 display is amazing indoors. Outdoors is another story and a major beloved patriot in the armor.

And how much does viewing angle matter on what is essentially a one person device? You are usually holding it at less than arms length straight in front. Just got a Droid as a replacement for the Devour and the screen is okay.

There is no screen protector on the Evo in the picture, it's stock everything. The Evo does look amazing, but that's amazing for an LCD, not amazing compared to everything on the market. It's moderately surprising to me that OLED technology has been out this long and so many tech enthusiasts appear to have had no idea the difference was that large. The difference between LCD and OLED is nothing short of the difference between LCD and CRT. A key difference being OLED fixes virtually all of LCD's shortcomings while LCD was/is inferior to CRT in a lot of ways.

OLED is worse in direct sunlight than an LCD(but still usable), but it's a bit far-fetched to say any LCD is good in bright sunlight, they are all similarly terrible. OLED is superior in every other aspect; all indoor lighting conditions, evening outdoors lighting conditions, color, contrast, viewing angles, and battery consumption.

With the way OLED's sunlight issue is criticized, some of you guys make it sound like you know of a phone that looks good in sunlight. There is no phone on the planet that is suitable for web browsing or reading for long periods of time in direct sunlight without shade of some sort. They are all moderately usable at best, none provide a good experience in bright sunlight. I've never been in a situation where I wasn't able to use the phone. I don't like using it outside at noon, but it's fine pretty much any other time.

I have a Zune HD, and I've had quite a few high end LCD smartphones.

In certain situations - such as darker rooms, especially with something with dark colors on the screen - the Zune blows my phones away. In general, yes, I do think the Zune's screen is better looking. However, in sunlight....its no comparison. LCD is considerably better. I would hate to use an OLED phone as a GPS navigation unit on the dock in my car, for example.

Samsung's SuperAMOLED technology might be the answer, but honestly it isn't widespread enough yet. Maybe I'll sell my HD2 and get a Galaxy S and find out!

I noticed my EVO was quite usable outdoors, however the OLED does look great indoors. I'm curious to see how the new iPhone screen holds up, looks like one nice panel.

OLED screens sometimes look overly washed out, like when you jack up the brightness on an HDTV like BestBuy does.

Well... at least you have a good idea of what OLED vs. LCD looks like on that guy's camera and through your specific monitor. :awe:

I want to say it was the other way around for Droid vs Nexus One. The N1 was very over saturated. This makes sense as the N1 was benched for 141% Gamut whereas the Droid was at like 102% or something.

but the colors are very nice on the N1. I suppose our eyes like that saturated look.

My buddy just bought an EVO 4g and I have a Nexus. We were comparing this exact thing yesterday. We put on the same Youtube video and let it play in HQ quality. I'll say this, the Evo speaker destroys the Nexus One. That said, we both noticed pretty quickly the display difference. Not that the Evo has a bad display, hardly. But compared to the Nexus it certainly looks a bit washed out. This was in normal indoor lighting.
