My friend in DC checked US Navy office in that area and they are offering a military helmet for $25.

Are you trying to be funny? That is very bad taste. It is well known that the caliber of bullet used would shred a bullet proof vest.

body armor is for CS wussies! Seriously though, how do we know this can stop a shot from a .223 rifle? I thought you needed Level III or 'armor-plated' BP vests for this type of round/gun.

Actually if I was in that area it wouldn't be funny too me, I would seriously be looking for some protection.

An interesting point was made by a professor of mine in class today...She was claiming how this sniper event is an example of a particular theory of hers stating that everyone gets hyped up over something like this yet the overall odds are much greater that one will be killed on the freeway. It's interesting because people will fly down the freeway at 95 to get to work on time, then cover themselves up to not get shot. Just a matter of perspective I guess.

I don't know what bad taste you are refering to. People living in that area are looking into body protections like my friend did with the navy office.

Somebody was shot 5 minutes from my house and I do not consider this or any of the other 10 exact posts that have shown up here in the past weeks funny. There is nothing you can really do aside from staying inside at all times. This vest would not help with .223 bullet. The poster could care less about our safety because he dosn't even know what is going. He is just looking to start something.

I live in Montgomery County, Md. about 3/4 mile from the first batch of shootings, and I don't personally find this to be in poor taste. You gotta have a sense of humor when shiznit is hitting the fan. Can't be serious all the time.

Anyway, I think you'll need at least Level III A protection, since the FUBARed sniper is using 5.56FMJ, not 7.62FMJ. I don't think you'll need a helmet, though, since he seems to be aiming for center mass.

This stupid crap would not stop a bullet from a rifle. You need body armor to do that and that is not an option for wearing all the time.......

Ok have a sense of humor but this is the 10th post I have seen like this and it gets old especially when the vests will do nothing to protect you.

Whats funny is the people doing the sniper shuffle at the gas pump I see them and I chuckle. Not because it is funny looking but because they think it will help.

Ya know, I gotta give the poster here the benefit of the doubt with this post. I don't think he was trying to start anything, or be funny, or cute. Read the post. There is absolutely no sign of cynicism, sarcasm, smiley faces, or laughy faces.
Granted, the vests in question may not be designed to stop a .223, but if I lived in the affected area, and I believed that wearing one of these vest might offer me even the SLIGHTEST protection, I'd be seriously considering wearing one.

Typically that's not the case. The law is written against felons- that is it is only illegal to wear body armor in the comission of a crime. It is otherwise allowable.

Weird. If someone is committing a crime, I'm not sure a little extra jail time is gonna scare them off protecting themselves.

I'm not up on the particulars of this but I think it speaks to premeditation. If you're robbing a bank it's pretty clear you intend to get involved in a shootout if you're wearing body armor, hence the extra charge. Many people are under the illusion that it's illegal to wear body armor, and typically there's no reason to unless you're a celebrity or have an imminent threat on your life. Current events will probably change people's perceptions in that regard, anyway.

This thread can be helpful, regardless of the poster's intent. I'm suprised there wasn't one guy in the WTC paranoid enough to have a parachute, but there's been many discussions about skyskraper survival devices since. While it isn't economic for everyone to have one, if you're fairly well off it couldn't hurt to drop some $ on a vest until this whole thing passes.

My local Fry's didn't sell gas masks until after 9/11- we're all just changing with the times.

I don't think it's a stupid post.

Ok then what is the point? We have established that this vest is useless in DC metro. So now we are discussing a deal that is probably not that hot considering this is probably the first site the poster saw with a BP vest. He thought it would be cute to post it and see what happens. If the poster did some research and this is a great deal than forgive me but it still has nothing to do with the DC sniper.
