It must be a full moon or something. I could have sworn I just got to work and here it is 11:30 already. I'm already stressed out from working 2 jobs and the boss is on jury duty this week. After a plethora of silly issues this morning, a user comes up and says I installed McAfee security center and now my computer won't work. WTF do you mean your computer doesn't WORK???? Thanks for the details. I mean does it come on at ALL? Can you login? Help me out here! Anywhoo, I go over to the computer and it boots into windows and then freezes. Trying to plaster a smile on my face and keep from strangling the sh!t outta him, I tell him to NEVER install anything like that on his machine again. Two antivrus programs on one machine = TROUBLE = more work for me!! User:"Well I needed the firewall capabilities." NO you don't! You have fvcking Windows XP Service Pack 2's firewall. WE have a company firewall. The only reason I can think of is that he wants to make my life a living hell. The next person that comes to my cubicle with a computer problem today is going to feel my wrath! That is all. :|

You're a crappy admin. Users shouldn't even be able to install anything at all.

Are you all reading my responses? I stated waaay back in the post that giving or revoking local admin rights is not up to me. My boss establishes IT policies since he is the IT director. If it were up to me they wouldn't be able to adjust the clock settings. Besides the story has a minor twist to it -- I failed to mention that this user gave his company laptop back so this is one that he purchased himself. So him not being an admin probably isn't an option. Then that brings me to my next belief...if it's not a company machine then we shouldn't have to support it when it breaks. :Q:p

No, your initial post was enough.

shouldn't you take away their rights to install things? I'm not an admin and even I know that :D

Just format him and make him start his work from scratch again. I'm sure he'll think twice about doing it next time.

Just make a ghost image and whenever they have a problem like that, just blow the whole fvcking install away. They'll lose all their wallpapers and bookmarks and crap like that...but who cares? That'll teach them to install McAfee bloatware without your knowledge.

No..see thats the bad thing. My boss runs the place. Everybody has local admin rights. He is thinking about changing that but it's been that way always. It's his call...If it were up to me then I would never give them admin rights. However he's afraid to put his foot down on anything. He makes the big bucks..I do all the work...he lets them do whatever they want because I'm the one that has to fix it anyway...Oooh..speak of the devil...the user in question just walked by...<300MDemon grabs pair of scissors and tip toes off with a sly grin>;)

ugh.. its one thing when you start users off with very little rights and then add a couple which they are very appreciative about. Totally different ball of wax when you give them full rights and then take them away. You'll be getting "well i used to be able" and "i never had to call you before to do this" or "why cant i install aol on my computer anymore?"

user: something's wrong with the computer. I tuned it on, and the cpu made a loud noise. I just pulled the plug to turn it off.

So I turned on the computer and the CDRom started spinning..."do you hear the cpu running, I think the computer's broken!"

I was speechless.

I get this one sometimes. But what's even worse is when you get it second hand.

Support Analyst: Somebody in department x said something in your program wasn't working.
Me (developer): Well, what error were they getting?
Support Analyst: I don't know, they just said it wasn't working.
Me: What function were they trying to do?
Support Analyst: I don't know, they didn't really explain.
Me: /hangs up
