QFT. Conor has written some amazing stuff with Bright Eyes and Desaparecidos, and none of it has anything relation to what people here see as 'emo'. Sure, there are plenty of teenage fans who are overdramatic, lacking perspective, and sometimes ridiculously stupid, but that doesn't take away from the quality of the music. Having seen Bright Eyes in concert 3 times now, I can say that while there have been many 'emo kids' in attendance, I have met a lot of down-to-earth and genuinely nice people at these shows as well.

Bands: Green Day, My Chemical Romance, and others I cant remember atm... we have tons of emo kids at our public school... go up to em and kick their @$$3$ once in a while...
Is futures the single off the new album? I think Kill is one of my favorite songs from them. I blame MTV and the record companies for picking the worst songs on the albums for singles (ie The Middle, the one JEW song i cant stand)
MTV has nothing to do with picking singles, the label decides what song to release as a single and when.

Futures is both the album and the song - the album isn't horrible, just "Jen" - I hate that song. My point was look at Clarity (best IMO), Static Prevails, and their split EP's with Jebediah before commenting that a band is "emo".
Kill would be labeled "emo" by 90% of this board just because of the subject matter but I agree it's a great song. Unfortunately Snagle is right, the record labels pick the singles based on what they think the majority of radio/MTV listeners/watchers will hold onto.
The GUK show I went to in the summer was the same way; tons of emo kids floating around but I didn't let it bother me one bit. Awesome time for a fan since Red Letter Day/Woodson times. Too bad they're breaking up. Going on a tangent....
There's plenty of bands who'd be labeled instant emo but record great material; I'd just wish people would give something a chance before slapping the "emo = crap" label on every album that has some semblance of social conscience or intellegent lyricism.
And Green Day is not emo. They've always been punk/pop, even more now. Could someone tell the radio stations that "when september ends" is not politically poignant or groundbreaking social commentary on war? Please?

but Jimmy Eat World / JEW is actually kind of considered to be a founder of emo. And yes there earlier stuff is way better than their current stuff, but their current stuff is almost a different style. Futures is progressively a slower album, much more so than Bleed American, but Bleed American still had a certain softness to it too.
a lot of what people consider emo is completely not emo. Just because a song talks about death and killing and breakup, doesn't mean its emo. Most of it is just rock with a less than random lyrical makeup. I like all rock, but sometimes the completely randomness isn't what I want to hear. Sometimes I like hearing something come out of a song than simple random lines.
Funeral for a Friend follows the current JEW theme, imho. But they also sound great.
other bands that follow emo and are closer to emo than ordinary pop rock like my chemical romance (good band though), would be:
Silverstein, Murder by Death (odd-accoustic sound to it), Team Sleep (lead singer from Deftone's new completely emo side-project), A Change of Pace, Anberlin, The Academy Is... (closer to pop-rock though), Death Cab for Cutie, The Spill Canvas, Moments in Glory, The Early November...
i was just naming a majority of the bands in my rhapsody playlist, but I'd say a majority of them are full-fledged emo. But all are awesome. Not much punk-pop in any of those.
and btw, the man in black, Johnny Cash.. could easily be described as the first emo for rock and roll/country. he had good stuff though.

yea....I can't remember the name of this one band, but I always liked their intro (instrumental). But then the song got $hitty after like 15 seconds....

Clarity (JEW) is BY FAR the best album i own. If you hate emo and have never heard "For Me This Is Heaven" or "Goodbye Sky Harbour" (which judging by replies a lot of people probably haven't) then quit bashin

the lyrics are more random then meaningful, thus it cant even be considered emo... they just have the emo/scene followers. i admit, i like them. but they are not emo.
