For all you BeOS lovers... OpenBeOS!

It sounds like a nice concept, but I don't really see this as being very viable for general for atleast another year or more. But I will definitely be keeping an eye on this.

EDIT: I can't believe this, I just started downloading BeOS 5 😀, and I appear to be the only BeOS lover here

I've been on the OBOS mailing list for about a year now, and its really shaping up into something that could be viable for desktop use in the near future.

I'd have to agree with you on that. BeOS, by and large, was a great OS. Very GUI fast, easy to use and its useability was much better than anything else I've played with before. My friend owned a BeBox (long since gutted) and he loved coding for that machine.

Its too bad Be went x86 so late -- they could have really made a significant threat to the x86 desktop market if they started earlier.

I wish they hadn't bothered with x86 at all and Apple had bought them along with NeXT. NeXt. nEXT. next. NEXT. NExt. NeXt... whatever.

Duhhhh, I know want you wish! You wish that microsoft had bought Be instead. Ha ha, yes, I can see it now: Be XP, Be all U can B. 😉:disgust::Q😕

Oh yeah, BTW if I recall correctly is NeXP.... er..... NeXT

Seriously though, what good would have come from Apple's purchase of Be???

I've defintely been watching this one too also on the mailing list since Be Inc. got bought, but I see this as being a LONG way off since the kernel and app interface are still at Pre-alpha status right now. As for a truly new, legal, not a patched PE version of Be I think we need to keep an eye on Yellowtab/Zeta project as this seems to be a great OS that will see the light of day, I wish I could preorder right now.

That was getting too long 😛

I have an iBook, not an iMac. But, if the original iMacs were running BeOS they would be current and still *fast*!

How about this....

BeOS was Multi-Processor, Multi-Threading, Pre-emptive Multitasking, slick FS capable of HUGE files..... IN 1995!
They were running 7 CPU PPC's on BeOS before Win95 was even release.... it took Apple what... 6 or 7 years before they caught up on their own?

They should have bought Be and hired back Jean Gasse and all the other former Apple employees who made up the lion's share of Be.

Ah ha, I figured you were a Mac user 😀. Really though that seems like a bit of overkill to me, Apple already has the best interface by far 😀.

And don't any Windows people bring up XP, heh, they say (paraphrasing here) that the bet compliment is a copykat 😉.

I got a Mac because of OS X. With some of the technologies they could have gotten from Be, Mac OS X could be twice as good.

Mac OS X * 2...... Hmmmm.....

If Apple had fetched Be than the chances are that Microsoft wouldn't have stood a chance. When you think about it though that does sound like the ultimate killer combo. Its a shame that its too late to go back and fix this. Time machine anyone?

Excuse me while I bust out in a uncontrollable fit of laughter....

It must be nice to live in your own little universe 😛

Indeed it must be, pray tell what color is the sky over there. I'm referring to windows as a desktop OS. If Apple had snagged Be and been able to effectively combine the technology of both OSs and this before the release of Win XP, then yes IMO things would look quite different today.

Well... it would have been a totally awesome OS, but Apple would have been cutting its own throat unless it drastically lowered its hardware prices or ported the product to the PC platform.... they've only done the former in the recent past and they still haven't done the latter.

You want to know the real reason that Mac isn't taking over the market even though that they got a comercially supported OS that is supperior to MS in almost every way?

because you can get a apple that has a 1ghz proccessor for $1200.

And you can get a Dell $1100 that sports a 2.53mhz proccessor, plus a free lexmark printer.

And I know that a clock for clock the g4 is superior to the pentuim4 in everyway, but no way it is superior to a proccessor that is 150% faster. And although I understand the OS is easy to use and it's just plain better, 90% of people don't know that. They just know that it is different and they can get their email and burn CD's in XP just fine... (well for a couple months anyways, before it gets FUBAR'd)

ok lets see..
more expensive, slower, and with a alien OS.... um I think daddy's gonna get a dell.

to bad... now if apple would get of there butts and knock 400 bucks of off those and there spiffy laptops, and thow the OS in free (I mean not free as in FREE, but along the with the cost of of the computer.. including major upgrades) , then they'd have a winner, but right now it's gonna take years for them even to gain a few percent in the market share. The G5's better be GOOD.
