foot hurts several hours after first 5K

Ran my first 5K on Saturday! That's the good news. 29:50 which met my goal of under 30 minutes. If it weren't for a leg injury I've been nursing and I kept running for hte past several months I could have probably done sub 27 minutes. But anyway....

After the race, I felt fine. ACtually felt real good. So after a rest I ran home which was about 0.7 miles. Met my goal on that short run too ;-) Sub 9 minute pace.

Anyway, I felt fine at home. Several hours later I went shopping and when walking out of the store my foot began to hurt. It's my left foot and the outer edge is in pain.

I did some Googling. Sounds like Peroneal tendinitis or a stress fracture of my small foot bone. It is now Monday and hte pain has not gotten better or worse. Does this mean that it sounds more like a stress fracture? It's not horrbile pain but I dread the thought of walking long distances.

FWIW: I did ride my bike fairly agressively after this pain started and it did not hurt at all. Seems like it only hurts when I put pressure on the bottom of my foot.

I get foot pain sometimes when I run. The first couple times I thought I had stress fractures and went to the doctors but they never found anything.

My pain was along the bottom of my foot towards the outer edges. The pain wasn't bad but it was noticeable.

I found some article about rolling my feet for deep tissue massage. I thought what the hell so I got a golfball and rolled the bottom of my foot and it was almost orgasmic. I put almost my entire weight on there and rolled it all over.

Golf balls were a tad uncomfortable so I got a girls softball and have been using that since.

So, I guess it was sore muscles on the bottom of my feet causing my pain.

BTW, congrats on your 5k!!!

If it's a soft-tissue injury, it'll probably get better within 2-3 weeks. If it's a stress fracture, an x-ray can sometimes pick it up (if it's obvious or big), but you're likely to need an MRI to see it.

I had a similar injury earlier this year near the spot where a Jones fracture would be. It would hurt to walk on the foot or put pressure on that spot. I didn't even know what a Jones fracture was at the time but my wife (a doc herself) got me worrying about it. Anywho, in summary the pain stayed almost the same for about 15-16 days, then it just *poof* faded away. I went to see the doc on day 14 lol, but thankfully didn't get a MRI done.

Could be peroneus brevis tendinopathy, 4th or 5th metatarsal fracture, cuboid immobility (at calcaneocuboid joint) or subluxation, or even just something like a bone bruise from the repeated impact. If you see a good sports chiro or PT, you could get something called the cuboid whip done. It repositions the cuboid. If you're pain free after that, then no worries. It probably wouldnt feel good to have it done with a fracture though 😛

If you rode your bike without pain, I'd say it's less likely to be a fracture.

My bike shoes are tight. And when i had them on (not even riding hte bike) it felt great.

I'm going to give it time and see how it goes. It's not a horrible pain that keeeps me awake at night.

Yeah, give it a few days. If it bothers you for longer than 2 weeks, go see a doc. If it's a stress fracture, it will be visible at that point in time as well.
