what's the point of even having a gun that recoils that hard? no one would want to shoot it. you fire one shot and you're like "ok, fuck that"... you'd rather use it as a club to hit something with than a gun.

The round is designed to stop charging African game. If you choose to use the rifle as a club when a 2600lb water buffalo is coming right at you, that's your call. I doubt the recoil would be the more painful choice though. ;)

I think one of those may have been a .700 Nitro, either way - OUCH. Imagine having to touch off one of those old side-by-side rifles in that caliber because an elephant, buffalo or rino is seconds away from stomping you into oblivion.

I've seen a version of some of that footage before, not the whole thing. Reminds me of when I was 12 and someone got me to shoot a .375H&H

"Pretend it's a 12 gauge!" :(

My neck and shoulder weren't the same for weeks, not fun. I totally believe the stories about hunters in Africa getting dislocated shoulders and detached retinas from the big bore stuff. Hats off to any dude that can do that accurately, repeatedly, as it certainly ain't easy.

Okay, I misunderstood then, my bad. I was thinking that you were suggesting the bullets path is significantly altered by the recoil, to the point where accuracy is out the window.

The recoil certainly affects the 2nd bullet :p

To quote a friend who's father left him a 9.3x64: "It makes you a better shot; because you do NOT want to pull the trigger again.."

Old school elephant guns for one. Need a lot of penetration to reach the vitals of an elephant.

Whether double rifle, single shot, or bolt action the concept of the elephant gun is the same: to provide enough stopping power to prevent harm to the hunter in the case of charging game. The necessities for the gun are not only extreme power, since in that case the 50BMG or 20 mm cannons would be the order of the day, but that it can be carried for long periods, shot from any position or angle, and be well balanced enough to track on rapidly moving animals. In essence it is no more than a very large hunting rifle with the same capability of use as any hunting rifle.
