The round is designed to stop charging African game. If you choose to use the rifle as a club when a 2600lb water buffalo is coming right at you, that's your call. I doubt the recoil would be the more painful choice though. 😉

I think one of those may have been a .700 Nitro, either way - OUCH. Imagine having to touch off one of those old side-by-side rifles in that caliber because an elephant, buffalo or rino is seconds away from stomping you into oblivion.


I've seen a version of some of that footage before, not the whole thing. Reminds me of when I was 12 and someone got me to shoot a .375H&H

My neck and shoulder weren't the same for weeks, not fun. I totally believe the stories about hunters in Africa getting dislocated shoulders and detached retinas from the big bore stuff. Hats off to any dude that can do that accurately, repeatedly, as it certainly ain't easy.

Old school elephant guns for one. Need a lot of penetration to reach the vitals of an elephant.
