i guess one should expect alton brown to be monstrously popular on a tech forum, but i generally can't stand the guy.

batali (and flay to a lesser extent) is the only real chef on the network anymore, but his show was canned years ago and reruns have been relegated to mornings/middays. food network unfortunately realized that upscale cuisine doesn't sell ad time - personalities, T&A, and dumbed down food does

You're kidding right? Flay and Batali are both pompous asses, but at least Batali can cook.

Alton shows more of the scientific side of things, which is why he is great. He is not meant to be a great chef per se, but more of an instructor.

KT

Are you serious saying Flay can't cook? Given, you might not like the guy and that is fine, but he can cook. How do you think this guy even made it this far? How do you think he has been the only chef at a couple restaurants that got raved reviews in NYC? The guy has proven himself in the cooking world.

By putting Mago salsa on everything?

:thumbsup::laugh:

QFT 🙂

alton is definetly #1🙂

bourdain is also entertaining. one crazy show he almost got run over by his atv while tumbling down a hill, that was badass!

Thanks for bringing up Bourdain. I spend about 45 minutes wiki-walking about him last night. I always enjoyed his Travel Channel show when I happen to see it on. It turns out he has a restaurant, Les Halles, here in DC. Must try out his fries. 🙂

yea he also has a book, and was on either city arts and lectures or the common wealth club on npr, i forget which.

For Bourdain lovers you should definitely read A Cook's Tour (it was a better read than Kitchen Confidential IMO). It's a great book and if you liked any of his shows, you will like it.

I just started reading The Nasty Bits, which I am hoping will be just as good.

God I hate Emril. You learn nothing from watching his show, you dont even know the quantities of the shit he puts in and his jokes always blow ass.

but i think I really liked bourdain, his life is freaky awesome. travel the world trying foods? sign me up

Alton is definitely fun to watch and quite informative but I think the cook of all time was Tony Bordain. He got kicked off the food channel and went to the travel channel....not sure hwere he is now.... best books to read as well!

He does "No Reservations" on travel ... he's entertaining ...

I like Alton a LOT ... whenever I'm looking for a recipe I type his name on front to check it out. This past weekend I made some slow cooked ribs with a dry rub ...

MMM mmmmmmMMmmmMmmmmm!!!

What about YAN CAN COOK!? ...

And there was that southern guy a long time back that used to "add a little wineeeeeeee" ... "hoooo eeeee!" ...

Alton was great in person and I love everything he does. He has such a great personality.

Feasting on Asphalt 2 is coming soon and I can't wait.

alton may come off as quirky and likeable on good eats, but he comes off as an ass on next food network star

I watched a bit of that show and he did come off as a jerk. But then, you can't really be on network TV if you're a pushover...you kind of have to be full of yourself to go in front of millions of people on television 😀

I like the guy, but man he was a grumpy asshole on The Next Food Network Star.

Bobby Flay is annoying at times, but at least he's himself. Emril I never liked/disliked because he's just so predictable. As you can tell by now, I hate Ray and Giada(spelling?) with a passion, only because they seem like fabricated robots.

How can you hate Giada? The only thing one is allowed to dislike about her is the size of her knobs.

I'm sorry but there is just something about Giada that really grinds my gears. I dont think I had a dislike for her until the showdown between her and Rachel Ray on the Iron Chef.

Alton FTMFW! I watch every episode of Good Eats. The secret to his success is that he actually teaches people how to cook, instead of just how to follow recipes.

edit: BTW, he's a germ/safety freak because Food Network forces him to be that way. He used to make fun of this in earlier episodes by portraying lawyers forcing him to follow rules or read legalese (like when he made beef tartar).
Other FN stars do the same, like Emeril's sarcasm of "Oh no, I touched the chicken!" as he goes to wash his hands each and every time he does so.

Just say a commercial for 'Feasting on Asphalt2', Alton Brown is the man. Hopefuly, he doesn't crash his bike and seperate his shoulder this time.

dummy grabbed his front brake on loose pavement/rock.

he can cook, but you NEVER do that unless you want to go down.
