So, what happened guys? Why is my food still the same price as last year? Was this thread just a bunch of useless fear-mongering, like I said it was?

Same as last year?

I do not know where you are at but here, orange juice prices go up from less than $3/gal to over $4/gal. And those prices are store brands and not Minute Maid.

Eggs prices go up. Used to be able to get $1/dozen for store brands. Not anymore. Meat prices go up too, especially beef. As far as I can see, very much everything that I need from the grocery stores go up in prices.

Prices for me are similar to last year. Nothing aside from ordinary inflation. I don't buy meat, so I don't know if that's any different.

Not a meat eater? Don't know what you are missing..yummmy. :)

Ordinary inflation? IIRC, the government said it was about 4-5% or less. The prices I am paying for groceries now are more than 4-5% from last year.

Here you go, from my own experience beside from what I already said above about eggs, orange juice, and meat. Prices do not include sale tax.

Campbell chicken soup: was able to get $1.25/can. Now all of them are about $2/can or so.

Toilet paper: was able to get $1 for 4 paks of the cheap ones. Now it is $1.50 or so.

Soda (Coke brand): was about to get $1 for 2 liters bottle. Now $1 only get you 1.5 liters or you have to pay about $1.5 or more for the same 2 liters bottle. A 20 oz bottle was $1.25, now it is $1.40 or higher.

And so on. I will update this when I go over the monthly grocery receipts.

You don't really do the grocery shopping, do you?

Food is going up like hell...and yes, I do the shopping and monitor it all.

Anyone else notice how the companies are cutting the sizes more and more as well as raising the prices?

I eat very little meat. All I buy is Spam, Italian sausage, and rarely hotdogs. I'll eat meat out occasionally, or when I eat at my mother's house.

A lot of what I get is variably priced anyway, so it's hard to say when it's gone up by $x. Maybe it's my shopping technique. I buy stuff when it's available at a price I like, rather than buying what I want regardless of price.

I don't think that was under dispute. Inflation does exist.

What you're talking about is sweet corn.

The bulk of the grain belt produces field corn which is used to feed animals, additives, fuel, plastic, you name it. Second to field corn is soybeans. Which also is in everything.

This means that everything we buy will double and triple in price. Not just sweet corn.

Apparently I underestimated the threat. Not just food, EVERYTHING we buy is supposed to be twice or three times as expensive. I don't see it. Have prices tripled in your neighborhood?

And note that while Rakewell was the one making the ridiculous "double and triple in price" statement, when I called it out as FUD nearly everyone in this thread called me an idiot. Okay then, who is the idiot now?

Using Soda price to show food inflation is pretty stupid. It varies so much from week to week due to frequent sales.

This week pepsi is on sale for $2.50/12pack at Target. I buy a lot of pepsi, it is the same price as it was 5 years ago.

I read an article in the WSJ last week saying that the corn stockpiles were way above estimates which was crashing the price. Food has gone up, more than the inflation statistics would indicate, but honestly that has been true since I started buying my own food not just this year.

Chropteran do your parents buy all your food? I mean seriously how can someone not realize how much the costs have gone up the last year compared to previous years. The 'double or triple' claim was retarded, but he was at least trying to predict the future. You're looking back on things that have already happened and concluding that 2 + 2 = 5.

Manufacturers are able to hide food price increases in many ways. Reducing the amount of something in a box or can. They also reduce the number of times they put their items on sale.

What has also helped is that the US dollar has done well and that makes it harder for food producers to sell overseas.

The government has also released a lot of stored grains to keep the market from exploding.

Another bad year this year and pipeline will be empty.

Costs have increased by 1% nationally, as shown above.

Maybe you missed this, but I also tried to predict the future: I predicted that a doubling or tripling of food prices was ridiculous and would never happen, but apparently my prediction (even though it's now proven to be correct) made me an idiot.

In my personal case, a trip to the grocery store has always been around $90-$100, for the last 2-3 years. Sometimes it's a little more sometimes a little less but I certainly haven't seen prices increase noticably in the last year. No, I am not a child, I am married and own my own home, and I do the shopping. I am intimately familiar the costs of the food I eat.

So what happens if you have a flood or a thunderstorm or an ice storm and the power goes out for 2 weeks? Hope you have a generator to run your refrigerator.

are you stupid or you don't do any shopping yourself?

Food is NOT the same price as last year. Also the huge thing is SIZES are not the same size.

damn near everything is more expensive. more then the cost of inflation.

BEEF is very high right now (glad i ordered a bunch when it was cheap).

Nearly everything we buy has gone up and most of it has reduced the amount in the package.

i usually shop at costco, safeway, and H-mart (asian store), and prices have been steady for the last year here.

headless unpeeled shrimp still ~ 4.50/lb at hmart
produce unchanged at H-mart
ground beef still around 2.90/lb at costco...
35 pack Spring water ~4.99 at costco, although i switched from store-brand to deer park since they don't have costco spring water anymore.

so i dunno what you guys are doing, but you're probably doing it wrong

That cant be right.

That's about what I spend on food in a month, and we have 4 kids (family of 6).

No eating out AT ALL

the chart is silly. some families will be FAR higher and some far less.

We are far less and we rarely eat out. BUT we also make most thigns from scratch. We don't eat a lot of boxed dinners. takes more time but taste better and cost less.

Duh. They said "DO NOT PANIC BUY FOOD"

Which means buy all the food while everyone else is't panicking.
