I just started running folding for the team. It took almost 2 days to complete my first work unit and just posted 225 points. Is there anything I can do to speed up my old Dell 8400? Its running one of the old hot P4 3.2 GHz, with 1 MB of RAM. The folding keeps the fans running pretty good and keeps my study pretty toasty, which isn't bad with winter.

Would additonal memory help any, or is this all CPU? Do these results sound about right for this computer? I am considering in the future to buy a cheap Mac for a second computer. How would a Mac mini or iMac compare to my Dell? How about a PS3? I could probably talk the wife into the PS3 for her TV for the blueray and have it run folding during the downtime.

Also, can you use the same folding account on multiple computers? Thanks for the help. Looking to boost our results.

A PS3 will give you about 900-1000 ppd
The highest ppd come from computers that can run the SMP client (core2duo or core2quads) or from Nvidia video cards (9xxx series or higher) that run the GPU2 client.

If your P4 motherboard has a PCIe x16 slot (unlikely, I think), you can add an Nvidia video card and run the GPU2 client (3000-7500 ppd depending on the work unit and the card you run).

My macbook (2.4GHz core2duo) runinng A2 core SMP workunits gets about 1800 ppd. So any of the iMacs will match that or do better.

The macmini would be marginal I think to finish an SMP workunit on time (1.83 GHz core2duo) and cooling might be an issue?

Also, there is not a GPU2 client for the mac yet so you can't take advantage of the high ppd with those WUs.

Ideally, you would want to build a core2 quad with 2 or more tru PCIex16 slots (2 x NVIDIA 9xxx+series cards) running windows. A machine like this will generate anywhere from 9000-14,000 ppd runing 1 SMP client and 2 GPU2 clients and will really keep you study warm!😉

Insidious has 2 machines like this and he is getting around 27,000 ppd!

Welcome to TA PlantATree, EvilGhaleon and bambam3883 🙂.

Good to see you post PlantATree 🙂.

Also, can you use the same folding account on multiple computers?

Yes 🙂, just use exactly the same name (& team number) each time you setup the client.

Bleh, slipped quite a few places, & that was before I switched back to DPAD 😛

Thx for the stats Gleem 🙂.

Although I'm new to this I'm pretty sure the high end Nvidia 8800s are quite quick @F@H, & IIRC quicker than the SMP (possibly excluding the i7), aren't they?

Amen, part of the reason I kind of gave up/forgot to do the weekly SETI stats ~2+yrs ago was because of the low response, I have considered quitting the DPAD stats too for the same reason. However at least in DPAD their is a far smaller number of active crunchers compared to SETI, & I do notice that my stats threads get a relatively high number of views 🙂. Although again it would be nice if more of those lurkers posted something from time to time 😉😛.

I must say though I thought these stats threads got quite a high number of replies? (or maybe I haven't noticed properly because this wasn't a project I'd run in nearly a year?).

The 8000 series of NV cards are a mixed bag. There were several people who had a difficult time with the 8600GT cards (I think the new NV core solved a lot of that)

but then if you fold with a 8800GTS (512MB) card, that one has the G92 graphics core you have a folding beast on your hands (for the $). I have two and they ante up well over 5000 PPD each on average.

I think so.

In my opinion if you have one, it's certainly worth putting it to work. But if purchasing, I think it is beyond the point of diminishing returns to get any NV core older than G92.

-Sid

I have some Best Buy gift cards and they have 18 mo same as cash. How would the Dell Studio desktop with the Quad Q8200 chip do with 6 GB of RAM? Seems like a pretty good deal for $800. I could even replace the video card with a Nvidia 9xxx series if the MB/powersuply could handle the load. I would think this system would run circles around my existing setup.

I'm sure it would be a good performer for SMP.

I looked at the pictures of the case opened and it appears that you might be limited on which video card will phyiscally fit into it. In my case, the 8800GTS goes pretty much the full width of the motherboard (ATX) but the 9800 GTX+ needs another ~2" beyond that. I am certain the GTX wouldn't fit in there and think the GTS would be a tight fit at best.

Looking at the Dell PC, It appears that you will be limited to the full width of the motherboard (I am assuming that is an ATX board in there) or a little less. If you get serious about it, make the people in the store grab one of the NVidia cards of the same model you are considering and then make them physically show you it will fit. (Don't just take their word on it. BB couldn't tell a Big Mac from a Whopper.)

-Sid

I agree with both Sid and A1. I've got an 8800GT (G92) and it's been a workhorse for a long time. I did have to put an aftermaket heatsink/cooler on it though. The 8800GTS is a good card too as long as you get the G92 core. If it has 320MB RAM it's a dog G80 core. If it has 512MB RAM, it's a G92. The problem with 8800GT's, is they're hard to find now. Newegg has only one and it's $134. I think the best bang for the buck right now is the 9800GTX+. You can get them for $160 with rebates and if you can, get one with customized cooling. I've got a couple of ASUS GTX+ cards that have custom 4 pipe heat sinks that run at 54-59C depending on the workunit. But these are in antec900 cases that have excellent airflow/cooling.

The problem with "off the shelf" systems is space (Sid pointed his out) and cooling. And I suspect the Dell system probably has a 280-300 watt power supply. for a GTX+, you would need 500 watts and a GX260 you would need 650 watts on up.

An off the shelf system would not be overclockable (CPU) with the possible exception of software overclocking. I had an HP Q6600 system and got so frustrated with it, I pulled the RAM, CPU and HDD's and built a new system around it (CASE, MB, Video card).

Bummer, newegg doesn't sell ASUS Video cards anymore!!🙁 I was going to put a link in for a GTX+ board.

Anyhow, Some of us are absolutely obsessed with maxing out our ppd, so we build our own systems!!

EDIT: misspellings

I agree the best route is to build my own system. That is the way I have always done it in the past with the exception of my current system. The way I see it right now the Dell at Best Buy is a major improvement over what I am running right now with no further modifications. Its just not perfect and probably wont be able to handle major video upgrades. The nice thing is being able to pay zero interest for 18 months. The custom build route will force me to come up with the cash now which isn't exactly easy coming off of Christmas. Plus its a harder sell with the wife. Buying computers isn't high on her list, which often turns into offsetting purchases such as furniture or what not. I am sure you get the drift if you are married.

I may just wait a while longer and custom build because I will probably be unhappy with the Dell. Although, who knows my current system could die tomorrow with the way this folding is stressing the system 24/7 😀

It is important to get the "need new computer" word in early with the wife, when it comes time to buy she will be pre-prepared 😉

After reading the other forums here, I am waiting a few more weeks to see if prices come down some after some future things happen.

Hmm. Why do you say that?

I'm a little concerned, I have that deceased Asus 9600GSO card that needs RMAing, and Asus's web site says to contact the reseller, which was NewEgg. 🙁

WHAT???

When did that happen?

This is bad. This is really bad.

I pretty much always use NewEgg and ASUS is my poison of choice. Do you know what happened?

-Sid

EDIT: I just went to Newegg and searched ASUS, NVidia video cards

They had LOTS of them??? Why did you scare me like that?
