Flu-like Virus Sickens Military Recruits . . .

Smart Move ?

Disgusting situation, at a buck a dose they decided that the troops weren't worth it - funding priorities.

Government was warned in 1984, and the plant was allowed to close in 1996,
Pentagon wouldn't fund the program to continue the production, and if they
do try to get it re-started the vaccine will not be availabe for 3 more years.

An outbreak in 2001 did create a temporary restart, but cost over $ 35 million.

2,500 troops in training affected each month, 10 % of all troops catch it.

More than three decades ago, the Pentagon (news - web sites) commissioned two pills to ward off the adenovirus, but defense officials abandoned the program in 1996 as too expensive, the paper reported.
Yup, I remember when funding stopped during the drawdown. I think either Stars and Stripes or the Army Times ran an editorial by some doctors too.

<-not a fan of flu vaccine...

It's really not recommended unluss you're an @ risk group & was marginally effective @ best.

BTW, there's supposed to be a massive flu vaccine shortage this winter.

My son came down with something like this on his return from Iraq to Ft. Campbell, KY.
It left him just physically drained for almost 2 months before he recovered.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is a Avian (Bird) flu strain that is coming out of the Orient now that looks
like it could be absolutely catostrophic, and the upcoming vaccines do not even
have it in their defensive make-up. Sars, same thing.

There's your next threat of a Terror weapon, Mutant Flu Strains.
A strain of flu, possibily Avian, that crossed species lines back in 1918
during WWI killed nearly 10% of all humans on the planet.

Also

Im not sure how true this is but I have read that flu vaccine contains mercury and may cause alzheimers. Ill take the flu. Anyways I didn't vaccinate last year and I never got the flu . It's been a year and a half since I have felt sick. Praise God.

Under whose watch did this happen? 😉

btw I had to get flu shots in college due to playing sports. After the 3rd year of getting the shot and getting sicker than I ever did without the shot. I told them to fly a kite. The first year I didnt get the shot I never got a bad cold.

It is so hit and miss. If you pick the right strain then it works. If you pick the wrong strain it is a total bust.

you have a son, in the military, that went to Iraq?

maddogchenn -

And came back - If you had read many of my posts you would have know that.

I did post information that was allowed as it became open record.
He was Military Inteligence unit 101st out of Mosul.
He went through Uday's 'Sex Palace' on initial sweep in April of 2003.
Cribbed (quartered) in Iraqi Airforce base near Baghdad when they took the airport there.
Escorted Iraqi Officials during formation of Intern Government.
(Machine Gunner atop Hummers during convoy escort)
Target Spotter/Identifier along Turkey/Iran border with armed RPV Drones.

His battle buddy was on duty when the Iraqi Citizen came into their headquarters
and turned over the hiding location/safe house of Saddams boys Uday and Quesay,
he had to get the Duty Officer to authorize a dispatch probe of the property.

He's not too thrilled about the Iraiq People, thinks rather poorly of them and their culture.

I have a 'poster' that his interogation group took from an Iraqi Airforce Officer,
that was captured and detaind as a prisoner in Mosel.
They were the equivalent of the old Civil Defense Spotter Charts
showing the 3-view profiles of the aircraft from Gulf-1.
It had a print date of 1990 (all in Arabic) but the single most interesting thing
about it was that it had information about the F-117 Stealth fighter back then.

this article just smells fishy to me, I have a feeling something is being left out.

$1 is pretty cheap

Especially considering Ive recieved Anthrax shots about 10 times so far, which Ive heard can run up to $200 per vile?

Not to mention I've also been immunized against
Typhoid (yearly)
Hepatitis A (3 or 4 times)
Hepatitis B (3 or 4 times)
Tetanus (yearly I think)
Small Pox (yearly I think)
Syphalus (one time)
Pnuemonia (one time)
TB Test (yearly)
HIV/STD Test (yearly or 6 months)

Im not sure how much all of these cost, Ive heard the pnuemonia one is especially hard to come by.

There's a bunch of other crap I cant even remember, The government has stuck needles in me more times than I can count. And when I was on active duty I had flu shots every winter. So is this article about a certain strain or something?

I think this was pills - and I don't know how many are needed to be effective; it may be more than $1/soldier.

Also, the sterility requirements for injectibles make them exponentially more expensive to produce than ingestable medicines.

you can thank clinton for this w/ all his military cuts...what a great president

maybe we're stretched so thin b/c clinton cut the military in half...

how can you say democrats are stronger for the military when clinton totally slashed the military and closed dozens of bases? Gimme a break, its hard to see through the truth through your party's bullsh!t, but you gotta try.

Can't you get anything through your thick head ! Clinton was the sitting President
when the REPUBLICAN CONGRESS cut the Military budget. It was the result of
base closures that were initiated under the last days of Reagan's Administration,
coupled with the Conservative Direction continued under Daddy Bush.

Upon the completion of Gulf War-1, Daddy Bush and Congress decided that since our
military actions had so overwhelmed the Iraqi Army, and the Soviet Union had
disolved, we no longer needed all the bases and active military personel.

When Congress cut the budget, Clinton had two options, sign or veto.
Congress would have over-ridden a veto, so signing it was what he did.

Base Closures

Base Closure Act, 1990

The undeniable fact remains, however, that U.S. military requirements have been fundamentally altered. The end of the Cold War, combined with the growing urgency to reduce the Federal budget deficit, compels the United States to reduce and realign its military forces. To reduce the number of military installations in the United States, and to ensure the impartiality of the decision-making process, Congress enacted the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Act of 1990 (Public Law 101-510, as amended).

Signed by President George Bush on November 5, 1990

Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) - 2001
Introduced and enacted by George W. Bush in July, 2001.

Looks like it was the Bush boys, Daddy and Junior - along with their Conservative Congress and it's
Contract on AMerica that gutted the Miulitary, and postured to make it look like it was Clintons fault.

By the way, I'm a Republican - but not one of there neo-con traitors that has taken
over the party with their Extreme Right Wing Base Apeasment Propaganda.
The GOP is dumping on 70% of the countries population to kiss the ass of the
20% hard core fruitcakes that support them - take that 25 % away and thier strength
falls to a paltry 30% that are giving them a free ride with their empty rhetoric.
Their 10% moderate sevtion gets left out because the Religeous fanatics get their way.
Now that's what is unfair - in a democracy the majority rules, in the GOP money rules.
You don't give them enough bribes to buy their version of Free Speech.

ok, so its the republican's congress's fault for the bases closing. But, the economic boom and surplus were because of clinton. Oh, i get it, anything that goes wrong is the republican's fault and anything that goes right is clinton's. Yet another double standard exposed.

That's a total disingenuous change of rhetoric from your previous post about Clinton slashing the Military.
Give you facts and you change to the DOT-COM BUBBLE. You're a phoney.
