Something like that happend here in Oregon several years back.
A guy working in a mill got caught up in the feed chain on a HUGE chipper. He knew they couldn't shut it down in time, so he took off his wedding ring and tossed it to a co-worker and asked him to tell his wife he loved her.

What a way to go! 🙁

Wow.... I guess I'll go shoot myself in the face now...

It sounds like woodchippers are inordinately dangerous! Where are the safety mechanisms? Isn't there an immediate way to cut the power? Where are the lawsuits?

I would say inherently. It is possible to kill yourself with virtually any powered equipment. For example, if you've ever worked on a farm you know there is an opportunity to kill yourself every time you turn around. The consumer versions of chippers have small openings so it is almost impossible to get caught in one (and also almost impossible to do any significant amount of work). When you have to have a huge amount of inertia and a large opening to do the necessary chipping with a commercial machine, it has to be dangerous if you use it incorrectly.

In the cases cited, the problem is not the equipment, it's the training of the people. In the two cited previous cases one involved a 14 year old boy - it's completely illegal to allow someone that age to work at that type of job. The second involved someone trying to unplug a running machine by using his foot - anyone see a problem here?

That sucks.. 🙁

I remember that one. We kept thinking what kind of dumbass sticks their foot into a wood chipper.

I thought most wood chippers had 3 or 4 inch grills on them so you could put through branches, but not legs.

Some of the industrial ones are huge. When they were widening Hillisbogough Ave. they had one I could have probably fit my Jetta into.

omg my legs are COMPLETELY gone... *SHUDDER*

this happened to a city worker where i live (clothing got caught & they were dragged into the machine).

the chipper safety cut-off switches didn't work. i guess they didn't bother to check them BEFORE starting to throw branches into the thing.

Compensated for what? Being stupid?

Ok, I don't know whether you're referring to the company she worked for, or the company that made the chipper. In any case, there is no indication of negligence from this story, so why do you suggest a lawsuit? Most likely she died because she was, to put it bluntly, stupid, or maybe just careless. Of course, when working with this sort of equipment careless = stupid. Only in America can you be sued for selling your product to stupid people

Or employing stupid people.

I'm sick of people shouting lawsuit at this kind of stuff.

Bet that was some pretty good mulch.....
OMG you just reminded me of this HORRIFYING movie my sister made me watch when I was a kid...it was about these college intellectual liberals who would have someone over for dinner every Friday. Well eventually they got this really fascist/conservative guy to come over and they all hated him...hated him so much that they stabbed him with a steak knife. They all got such a rush out of it...and they mulched the body and buried it in the back and grew prize-winning tomatoes over the spot where his remains were buried!!! Then every Friday they kept inviting more conservatives to dinner to kill them...they got klansmen, ultra-religious zealots etc. Kept killing them and burying them. Then a cop got suspicious about the ultra-sweet tomatoes and I forget what happens but I think the cop gets killed to. What movie was this??? I think I need to see this again!!!

EDIT: Found it, its The Last Supper

bumping a 3mo old thread with a story 10days old... 😀 I thought there was an even newer wood chipping tragedy. They do tend to happen in clusters, so, probably another one will be reported soon.

How the heck do you get caught in one of those things? You almost have to be reaching in there. You'd think people would have enough sense to use a long device to break jams. I wouldn't go reaching in there to fix a jam in the machine.

I guess they need to start posting labels on it. Sticking your body parts into an industrial meat grinder is hazardous to your health

That's exactly how it happens.

"Oh, but shutting it off to clear jams is such a hassle. I'll just nudge it a little, it will be fine."

It works a few times, they start getting closer...
