Actually he is correct they are first building it between two small towns in the central valley, it will literally be billions spent on a train from nowhere to nowhere.
Fresno isn't exactly a small town. The city has 500,000+ population. If you count the adjoining city of Clovis, then that number jumps up another 70,000. Merced is pretty small though. Bakersfield is smaller than Fresno, but still comes in a pretty sizable 330,000. Its a "test" track being built that will be used to work out the kinks for the more expansive track to come.
Fresno has several things going for it.
- Lots of open (farm) land in the surround area.
- Relatively flat terrain with relatively small number of bodies of waters.
- Centrally located to all the big population densities (LA County, Orange County, San Diego County, Silicon Valley/Bay Area, and Sacramento County) in California.
- Weather-wise, it scorching hot and freezing cold, but no snowfall, just rain and not much of it due to the two mountain ranges.
