Bet he wont text while watching a movie ever again.

Learned his lesson did he? Next time be a little more respectful.

Of course he didn't learn a lesson, he's dead. Kind of amazed at how many people seem to think that this guy had it coming. It's not cool and all when someone's disrupting your movie but they don't deserve to die over it. There were 25 people in the theater, I doubt it was packed tight, I'm sure the old guy could have found somewhere else to sit. This wasn't even during the movie proper, just the previews...

Nonetheless, I think it goes to show that it doesn't pay to escalate arguments with total strangers. If you pissed off someone you don't know say you're sorry and stop doing whatever you were doing. Don't get in some shouting match that could end with a bullet in your chest.

Kind of amazed at how many people can't go 2 hours without having to use their phone. But at least there is one less of those people now.

There is a time and place for texting. While driving or at the movies are 2 places it is not okay.

I agree with the driving, and I don't text/use a phone at a theatre. But it's definitely not the place to start shit either. Leave the theatre and demand a refund because the theatre isn't enforcing their own rules and it's disrupting the movie you paid to see. Problem solved. Shit isn't life or death unless you make it that way....Driving while texting is life or death, directly due to the texting.

Of course, now there's a 3 year old without a father, and another mother that's qualified for state assistance. I'm sure you're pumped about that too.

People can be some sore a-holes. Sure texting at the movies is annoying but damn to kill someone over it, you're a cruel mofo/not proper in the head.

Part of the problem with our society is we expect respect from others, but do not want to give respect.

For the most part society has become self-centered and self-serving.

Then make a change. Pay it forward. Practice the Golden Rule, etc.. etc..

The problem is people seem to feel the need to escalate situations to the point of armed violence. Seriously, it's a god damn movie. It has no bearing on your life, until you put yourself in a situation where it does...like this.

I'm all for the right to own firearms, but the old man in this situation needs to be banned from owning a firearm for the rest of his life, in my opinion of course...

This reminds me one time I went to the movies. These two older ladies behind me were talking and making comments the whole time. My gf made some comments which I'm not sure they heard the first time. I'm sure they heard her a few other times.

They didn't stop blabbing. At the end we went to the manager or who was working the booth and told them what was going on, that we spent money and tried to enjoy a movie but these old ladies talked the whole time.

Manager came right over and gave us 4 movie passes with no limits. I still have them. And I used one already, went to a quieter theater in a different location near me.

The guy got shot for texting during the previews. The previews. You can go see your precious trailers again online if they're that important to you. What is wrong with you people?

You don't even know why he was texting. Maybe he remembered something important that he needed to tell his babysitter. And you don't know what the guy was like outside of this. Just saying we're all better off now that he's dead. Everyone's an asshole sometimes.

So in your scenario the texter learns he can do whatever he want and will continue being an asshole to everyone.

And given how entitled and addicted to texting he seems to be I wouldn't doubt one bit if he texted and drove.

Then make a change. Pay it forward. Practice the Golden Rule, etc.. etc..

The old man did make a change.

How exactly does one use the golden rule to deal with assholes?

It seems to me like it was the father who kept escalating things by starting a confrontation after the old guy went to speak to the manager. Dude brought popcorn to a gunfight and paid the price.

Yeah, I tried looking through posts to see if anyone mentioned this, but I couldn't find a post until yours. The movie wasn't being played yet. The lights probably hadn't even dimmed or the little video that tells you to shut your phones off hadn't even aired yet.

Unfortunately, it sounds like the older man was a control freak and didn't like being told no.

whatever he wants? was he gunning people down with his phone? Please, not even in the same ballpark

The old man did make a change.

Oh yea, his living situation will probably change as well. But we'll have to wait for all the facts before we can really make an educated decision.

How exactly does one use the golden rule to deal with assholes?

Treat others how you expect to be treated. Not hard. It's not just what you say, it's how you say it.

71 YO: hey buddy, no texting in the theatre, respect mah authoritah!

It seems to me like it was the father who kept escalating things by starting a confrontation after the old guy went to speak to the manager. Dude brought popcorn to a gunfight and paid the price.

Again, we'll have to wait for all the facts before making a judgement call. Dude brought popcorn to a movie theatre...

No comment on the government assistance? You're cool with that?

I can't believe the number of people siding with the shooter in this thread. Kill someone every time you find their behavior irritating. Freaking bunch of sociopaths - that's ATP&N. The ass-end of humanity.

I really hope you're not condoning what the old man did or think that the other guy deserved to die. If you really do, you're completely and utterly fucked in the head. I already know Texashiker is.

Why am I not surprised that piece of shit gun control idiots are using this to attack guns. A man is dead and you idiots want to be funny and score political points.

The man needs to be locked up and face justice for what he did.

Is it any surprise that the shooter was a retired cop? It just had to be. He must have forgot that his license to kill had expired.

Here is his statement:
During an interview with Reeves with his arrest, and after the former cop was read his Miranda rights, Reeves admitted to firing his weapon at the victim because "he was in fear of being attacked," according to the police report.

ROFLMFAO... that is what the cops always say. I suspect he gets off. If I were on the jury, he would get life. The defense will get a bunch of NRA types on the jury and he will walk.

It has been noted, this was during the PREVIEWS. Holy shit, how the fuck does texting during PREVIEWS bother anybody except the most anal control freak?

Reeves retired in 1993 as a captain with the police department in nearby Tampa. He was also director of security at Busch Gardens until 2005, CNN affiliate Bay News 9 reported. Police told CNN that Reeves was instrumental in establishing the department's first Tactical Response Team.
Reeves' son, Matthew Reeves, works for the department as a patrol officer, CNN affiliate WTSP and the Tampa Tribune report.

So hes retired 20 years, and retired from his second job going on 10?

On the surface, this isn't a gun issue, this is a mental illness issue.

To your comment about his statement, I'm sure a lawyer advised him to do that even if unofficially. If he was on the force that long, an old PBA friend may have whispered in his ear unofficially.

He shouldn't beat this, but he might.

I wanna hear what the wife of the man who got shot had to say. She was there, she should be able to tell what happened that made the 71 Year old pull out a gun and shoot for fear of being attacked.

People need to learn to be polite and exit the theater, do your texting business, then return to your seat. Just because he was shot dead doesn't excuse him for being an inconsiderate jackass. "It was the previews." "It was his daughter." No, he's a jackass.

As much as you think other people are crazy - why do you feel the need to defend him?

Same scenario, no gun present, the news headline would be about what an asshole this guy was texting in a theater and refusing to stop when asked to stop.

Stats: on average 43 people are murdered in the U.S. every single day. It's not possible to grieve and be saddened for them all. Your life would be overwhelmed by misery. So yea, sorry, am not saddened by this shooting of someone I don't know. And neither are you guys. You just say all the "right" things because that's the attention you want from others, to be known as the guy who cares - regardless of whether it's true or not.
